She has a plan, an industrial strength chain, and a Live Feed… Set in a fictional Irish village following the opening of a new gold mine Aurora: A Modern Myth follows Cass’ protest as she and those around her (human and otherwise) grapple with what comes next for us and the planet we call home.

Originally commission by Project Arts Centre this exhibition is comprised of sculpture, digital & material collage, musical instruments, ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and live sculptural sound elements. Culchie boy, I love you / Grá mo chroí thú, mo chábóigín féin references Irish folklore, mythology, and craft traditions in an exuberant expression of rural q***r experience.

WIth thanks to Úna McCarthy, Siobhan O'Reilly and the whole team at Limerick City Gallery of Art, Alex Synge for the visual identity, and huge thanks to Matt Packer for a newly commissioned exhibition text.

Originally from Sligo, Kian Benson Bailes received a BA in Visual Arts Practice from IADT, Dublin in 2016 and currently lives and works in Dublin. Recent multidisciplinary work has examined Ireland’s language and colonial history – as well as craft, folklore and art – to re-evaluate a sense of place and self.

Mask, music and movement combine in this new piece of physical theatre about the forgotten Irish navvies who worked hard, faltered and slowly faded from memory. Not A Word invites you to sit with a silent man on another unexceptional evening. A day’s labouring done, he plays an old tune and remembers.

Brú Theatre presents Not a Word, a piece of physical theatre merging mask, music and movement in a celebration of those who took the boat — worked hard, faltered and slowly faded from memory. Performed by Raymond Keane, with live electronic and traditional music from Ultan O’Brien, Not A Word offers a moving portrait of one emigrant that echoes many people’s stories today. This ode to a self-exiled labourer, making his way in this small space between places, is directed by James Riordan with mask design by Orla Clogher.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙨 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙋𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚? is a new research and planning initiative from Project Arts Centre that seeks to understand artists’ processes and practices better.

We want to know what drives you, nourishes you, inspires you, so that we can figure out new ways to support, complement, stimulate, fortify and make space for artists. This will help to inform our artistic planning for the coming years. We want to go beyond traditional CPD (continuing professional development) frameworks towards thinking about the intangible, the embodied, the ephemeral…the slippery and abstract things that form artists’ ways of being and making.

We're asking you to help us by filling in our 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙨 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙋𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚? survey, which has a set of questions about what fuels you to make the work you make, and a few questions about you and your circumstances. The survey is for artists and arts practitioners working in any discipline, please share your knowledge with us!

Fill in our survey right here: https://forms.office.com/e/zNhTUbg0i7

Your input it invaluable, but we've got a gorgeous €50 voucher from our friends at Sano Pizza to give away, and we'll do a draw for this from all the respondents (who share their details) after the deadline.

“Jenny Brady’s international career has seen the always fascinating Irish artist explore ideas around speech and communication. The Glass Booth, her new experimental film work, has the potential to be particularly intriguing, as it looks at the work of language interpreters. First deployed at the Nuremberg Trials, simultaneous interpretation has direct connections with conflict resolution, bilingualism and the founding of the United Nations. Scope for misunderstandings abound as Brady looks at the work of interpreters and what may be lost or found in translation....” - Gemma Tipton, Irish Times.

Thank you Gemma Tipton for including our upcoming summer exhibition ‘The Glass Booth’, by artist Jenny Brady in The Irish Times “2025 in art: 10 shows to look out for over the next 12 months.”

Read more here: https://tinyurl.com/rfa63rku

Look out for the launch our 2025 visual arts programme and the re-opening of our gallery in February with the work of Eva George, continuing our commitment to exploring some of the most exciting practices of our times.

We’ve got some news…..💙

As Project closes for Christmas this evening, we wanted to let you know that we will be closing the building to the public for some essential maintenance work for the month of January.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a wealth of artists pass through these doors, tonnes of hard working hands build sets and break them down again, we’ve watched 100’s of lights get rigged, and had thousands of audiences soak in delicious art from the comfort of our iconic red benches.

With this in mind, we need to give the big blue building a little bit of love. We’re going to work tremendously hard behind the scenes to make this space as efficient, modern and fit as it needs to be to continue to cater to the artists and audiences who keep it running.

But don’t worry, Team Project will be working away in January keeping the ball rolling, and we’ll be in touch with you as soon as we come back together on Thursday 2nd January, with tonnes more news to share with you all.

In the meantime, don’t forget us, artist Thomas Kettle made sure of it with his second iconic billboard on Project’s facade.

See you on the flip side 💙

📣 OPEN CALL: Szombathely Mural Workshop 2025

Bloomsday, Szombathely has an ongoing, annual artistic programme and will present its new iteration in June 2025. In June 2024, artist Mark Joyce presented his painting in the city of Szombathely (pictured above) to warm acclaim. We are delighted to announce that the fourth iteration of this project will take place in 2025 and the partners wish to invite applications from artists based in Ireland to take part.

The Bloomsday project attempts to map the various references to Leopold Bloom (the protagonist of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses) in the city of Szombathely, Hungary. The proposed artwork should be inspired by episode 10 of Ulysses and applications are not expected to be illustrative of the novel but to engage with its formal and narrative experimentation.

💙 Deadline for applications: Noon, Friday 10th January 2025

We would ask artists to submit a 300 word, developed proposal, a CV/bio and 5 images (at least 1 of which is of previous work and at least 1 of which relates directly to the proposal). Links to video or audio submissions are welcome (2 mins max). All materials should be gathered into a single PDF document.

For further information on the full open call, including the ISL translation and audio file, head over to our website: https://bit.ly/4gjnues

Best of luck!
