Working away on getting more seeds planted and getting seedlings planted out now that the weather is a bit drier in between weddings. This has been one of the hardest years for growing with so much slug damage on earlier plants so I am late re- sowing some blooms and hoping that we get a decent summer later on and I get to harvest them. In the middle if all of it though, these beautiful roses have bloomed even though they have been neglected. These all started in the garden of a lovely man called Marks who loved his flowers too and I was lucky enough to get cuttings from some of his roses. These are a lesson in patience and perseverance. I also got to deliver flowers recently to a wonderful local lady Liz who just celebrated a special birthday and who has been through a very tough few years and yet manages to get up and face each day with a big smile. So just a reminder to myself and anyone that needs it this week to take it day by day and moment by moment and to be grateful. Little by little we will get there..... 🌞

Did you know that Valentine's Day is actually named after St. Valentine, with slightly dodgy historical tales and records about the origin of the story of St. Valentine (who was meant to have been martyred during the persecution of christians by the romans). It seems to have been the poets Chaucer and Shakespeare who helped bring the real romance and love into Valentines day.

In any case, we have been hallmarketed now into believing that red roses and lots of other fluff are what is required to express your love to someone on the 14th February each year. I think it is a wonderful day to do something special and romantic for your loved one (or for yourself for that matter) but not at the expense of the planet. Roses are not in season at this time of the year in most of the world and instead around 250 million roses will be shipped worldwide especially for today but does it really have to be this way ? In my personal opinion NO. The small choices you make today can have a big impact ; so what small choices can you make today to be more sustainable:
🌹 start with buying local, seasonal and buy plastic free
💞 buy from your local flower farmer all across Ireland (while they won't all have loads of fresh flowers just yet, they may have flower seeds, subscriptions, workshops or dried flowers offerings for example) www.flowerfarmersofireland.ie.
🌹buy from your local florist shop not the big discounters and and ask for 'certified' fair-trade and conflict free flowers which have been produced to better standards, ensuring fairer working conditions and more beneficial impacts on the local community and environment in which they are produced in,
🌹buy a living potted plant or flower from your local garden centre or flower farmer.
🌹Buy plastic free and never ever buy your flowers in oasis/floral foam because there really is no excuse for that nowadays. There are so many better alternatives that all of us florists can use.
🌹 Go medieval and make your own handmade card or buy a 'plantable card' or a handmade card from a local artist.
❤️Use up the last of the pancake batter from yesterday to make a heart shaped pancake with chocolate on top (yes my favourite)
Whatever you do today, be kind to yourself, to others & the planet. Happy Valentine's Day all ! ❤️

That's it for 2023 all! A big massive thank you to all my customers, beautiful brides and all my wonderful supporters for this year. It's been a tough year for a number of reasons but all the lovely feedback and love and encouragement I get from you all has meant so much to me and keeps me going ! Looking forward to a break now for a couple of weeks as I start planning out next year's flower planting. Lots learned this year, loads of mistakes, loads of new skills but lots more adventures to come. Wishing you all a happy peaceful lovely Christmas to you and yours. May 2024 be a good one for us all. Trisha. Xx
