Our 2nd swim on 21st SEP is almost sold out - just 6 entries left today

This was my post 2 days after our first swim on the 20th July in response to Colm Walsh's post:

Thanks for your help, Colm along with Denise Ganley, the gang from BISRA, Coast Guard, Bantry Harbour Master, Phoenix Kayak Club, West Cork Kayakers, John Goosen, John Bastow, Declan Bevan, Monika Swim Teacher, Bantry Red Cross, Dr. Paul Murphy, Garda John O'Shea, Cremin's Coaches drivers and Bernard Harrington and his staff. None of this can happen without permission from Finbarr O'Sullivan of the OPW on Garnish Island.
Many cogs make our event a success but without you the swimmers' support & enthusiasm our swim would be just that - a swim. Instead you all turn it into a celebration. Thank you

Cork Piano Fest continues this Friday 31st of at 1pm in the Triskel Arts Centre with Variations and Rhapsodies. Tickets: https://triskelartscentre.ie/events/variations-and-rhapsodies/

Music by Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt, Van Heusen, Rosolino, Churchill, Strayhorn

Tomás O’Hea, Jonathan Murray and Declan Murphy

The form of ‘theme and variations’ has held a particular fascination for composers for piano and keyboard from as far back as the early sixteenth century. From William Byrd to JS Bach’s epic Goldberg Variations, from Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert to Chopin, Brahms and Rachmaninov, the form has been a vehicle as much for showcasing pianistic prowess and improvisational ability as well as compositional technique.

CorkPianoFest, a new initiative featuring the Department of Keyboard Studies in a series of events in CSM Curtis Auditorium and at the Triskel Arts Centre.

The Ireland Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame proudly announces its Class of 2023 Honourees.

Please reach out and congratulate the individuals you have swam with, trained with, joined their event, and been inspired by. Also, please join us at the ILDSA Awards in Tralee on 18th November to applaud them in person during their Induction! Sheena’s children have been notified and we hope will accept the Honour on her behalf. Tickets on https://www.ildsa.info/about/ildsa-awards/

4 Honour Swimmers:
Andrew Flanagan completed several well know marathons before the English Channel: Lough Sheelin (1 way and 2 way), Inishbofin (twice), Galway Bay (4 solos - 1 a speed record), and Clew Bay. He then completed other marathons: Galway Bay (first ever 2 way), around Jersey, Jersey to France, and Fastnet.

Eddie Irwin was the first swimmer form Ireland to complete the Triple Crown (English, Catalina, and Manhattan). He completed other marathons: Lake Zurich, Strait of Gibraltar, and Cork to Cobh as well as pioneering several others in Cork.

Imelda Lynch was the first native Cork swimmer to complete the English Channel. She completed other marathons: Strait of Gibraltar, Inishbofin, Lough Sheelin, and Clew Bay. Imelda is already an Honour Crew in the Ireland Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

Pádraig Mallon completed the English and North Channels in a six-week window. He completed other marathons: Robben Island to Mouille Point and Strait of La Bocaine. Pádraig is already an Honour Administrator in the Ireland Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

4 Honour Administrators:
Joe and Philippa Gunn performed every role from Secretary to President of the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association for over 27 years, from 1979 until 2007. They also observed on many solo and relay North Channel swims and their son Conor and daughter Gráinne are Honour Swimmers.

Fergal Madden was one of the founders of the Atlantic Masters Swimming Club in Galway and serves as Chairperson. With almost 100 members, it is Connacht’s largest club - focused on open water swims. With Fergal's assistance they continue to produce successful marathon swimmers.

Sheena Paterson (1954-2014, RIP) was the former Vice President and Volunteer/Observer (Lough Erne and North Channel) for several decades with the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association. Her memory also endures through the annual: The “Sheena Paterson Spirit of the Year Swimming Award”.

These Honourees were selected by vote of living individual Honorees of the Ireland Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame . For more information see https://www.ildsa.info/category/hall-of-fame/. The website will be updated with full biographies in November.

This year's attempts at running our swim has been turbulent. Perhaps there is more of the same in store for us with weather patterns ever changing in the years to come?
Today it is my intention to bring to mind who you are supporting with your entry fees. Thanks to your contributions, BISRA has been able to fulfil its task better funded & equipped.
We thank you sincerely.

The online entry for our new date on the 11th November is now open.
Please remember there will not be a 5k event and the swim takes place in the middle of the day, with registration from 10 - 12.30 at Bernard Harrington's Bar.
This is our last attempt in fulfilling the wishes of our registered and possible new swimmers to round off this summer with another swim around Garnish Island. Should we again fail to go ahead, because Mother Nature has other plans, we will have to admit defeat. Please accept that in that unfortunate event we will not be carrying forward your entries to next year and your entry fees will not be refunded as you agreed to by signing the waiver.
I have added a new page to our website showing the history of BISRA. Your entry fees and donations have been of tremendous benefit to run and equip this vital & voluntary life saving organisation since 2012.
Thank you sincerely.

2023 AWARD NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN
HAVE YOUR SAY.......

https://www.ildsa.info/about/ildsa-awards/

As part of our vision to “Be a forum for rewarding and recognising Irish swims and swimmers”, after the end of each swimming season the ILDSA hosts an annual awards event at a location in Ireland.
The awards are the highlight of the year where the ILDSA rewards, recognises and celebrates the passionate and vibrant long distance swimming community and their achievements. As a national organization, the ILDSA alternates the location of the event around the country, and in recent years it has also been live streamed for those that are unable to attend in person.

Whilst we enthusiastically celebrate the current explosion and participation in open water swimming we also respectfully continue to search out our historical swims and swimmers and recognise the achievements of those that were pioneers in open water swimming before many of us were born.

Please use the link above awards page on ILDSA Website and you will find nomination forms against those awards that are open for public nominations.

Closing date for nominations will be Saturday 30th of September.

Whilst we are aware there are swims that may occur after 30th of Sept to enable nominations, followed by voting and the printing of medals, trophies and certs in time for awards in November we must apply a cut off date. Any swims that take place after 30th of September will be eligible for nomination into 2024 Award categories.

If you are looking for inspiration for nominees or information on ratified swims that have taken place you will find them on the ILDSA website

https://www.ildsa.info/
