Formed in 2010 by Christine Scarry, Red Alchemy Theatre Company is based in the heart of Kilkenny City, although its performance locations remain flexible.

We love to explore contemporary work, with a special interest in producing niche ensemble pieces.

Through innovative interpretations and high-calibre performances, we bring audiences on a memorable voyage into the magic of live theatre, making art that is engaging, emotionally powerful and accessible to all.

Red Alchemy Voice Studio is Christine Scarry’s private vocal practice (operating since 1995). She has a proven track record in contributing to the success of actors and singers: her clients have played leading roles on Broadway, the West End, and in major Irish venues including The Abbey and The Gate Theatres. What can we say about this historic night with Liz Callaway? To have an artist of this calibre performing the World Première of her new show in Cork was simply amazing.

Liz, you delivered an absolutely sensational performance at the Curtis Auditorium … not only was the audience thrilled by your enchanting rendition of his stage and screen classics, we were also privileged to hear your first ever performance of Fearless - the song written especially for you by Stephen Schwartz. Absolute magic. And GLENN, your vocals were - as ever – stunning – such a beautiful duet.

I can’t adequately express the depth of gratitude and appreciation for David Hayes and his musical magic on piano, with lovely playing from Michael Riordan on bass and Dylan Tierney on percussion. Huge thanks also to Colm Eaton for his moody lighting design, to Jason Fallon at One Louder Sound for flawless sound, and to Drew McCarthy and all the tech staff at the Curtis.

And what an enormous occasion for the students from the MTU Musical Theatre degree programme who contributed beautiful vocals and heavenly harmonies for the whole evening - all so generously supported by Liz - the spark of creation indeed. Sincere thanks to all the faculty for facilitating their involvement, and special gratitude to my wonderful colleagues at MTU Cork School of Music - and to the exceptional Sarah Brennan - for their support and kindness during a turbulent week.

In his glowing review, The Stage critic Mark Shenton wrote, “Liz is one of the greatest theatre voices in the world.” The audience certainly agreed when they rose as one in an immediate and spontaneous ovation – thank you for being such a wonderful audience. Those who were lucky enough to be there will cherish the memory forever 💛

THE WIZARD AND I: LIZ CALLAWAY SINGS STEPHEN SCHWARTZ will be an unforgettable evening of breath-taking performances of songs from the pen of the legendary composer who celebrates his 75th birthday this year. Ms. Callaway not only honours the great artist's work, but also their enduring friendship and artistic association as she recounts their lifelong professional/personal relationship, and performs a dazzling programme from WICKED, GODSPELL, PIPPIN, THE BAKER’S WIFE, POCAHONTAS, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME and THE PRINCE OF EGYPT.

Under the musical direction of the renowned DAVID HAYES, tenor GLENN MURPHY will appear as a special guest, and the concert will also feature students from the BA Musical Theatre degree programme at MTU Cork School of Music.

Liz Callaway is a Tony nominee and Emmy Award-winning actress, singer and recording artist. She made her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Baby, and for five years, won acclaim as Grizabella in Cats. She starred in the original casts of Miss Saigon, The Three Musketeers, and The Look of Love, received a Drama Desk nomination for her performance in The Spitfire Grill, and has appeared in Brownstone, No Way to Treat a Lady, Marry Me A Little, Godspell, and the legendary Follies in Concert at Lincoln Center.

Other credits include Dot in Sunday in the Park with George, Eva Peron in Evita, Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, and the European premiere of Sondheim on Sondheim at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Her extensive concert and recording career has taken her all over the world, including a tour of Australia with Stephen Schwartz.

Liz sang the Academy Award nominated song ‘Journey to the Past’ in the animated feature Anastasia and she is also the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin and the King of Thieves and The Return of Jafar.

Stephen Schwartz has been inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has been given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Awards include three Academy Awards, four Grammy Awards, and a tiny handful of tennis trophies!

The Live Final of the inaugural Sondheim Festival Bursary takes place at The Watergate Theatre from 6:30-8:30pm on Saturday, 7th October, when the eight selected finalists will perform Sondheim's work in this very exciting competition.

After the judges make their deliberations, Tony Award® nominee and Emmy winner, Liz Callaway, will make a special guest appearance before presenting the winner with the inaugural €3,000 award for the support and advancement of their musical theatre education. Our Story

Formed in 2010 by Christine Scarry, Red Alchemy Theatre Company is an independent, professional company. It seeks to explore provocative and challenging works by contemporary writers and composers, with special interest in contemporary music theatre, and is committed to producing work that offers professional performance opportunities to the graduates of Ireland's theatre and music theatre programmes. Through innovative interpretations and high calibre performances, they strive to achieve this aim, making live theatre engaging, emotionally powerful and accessible to all.

As a theatre director and producer, Christine has worked with national and international casts on a range of outstanding productions at home and abroad. She has directed work to critical and commercial acclaim in New York City as well as in professional theatres all over Ireland, and is Musical Director of the female vocal sextet, Alchemy and owner of The Voice Industry.

Red Alchemy Voice Studio is Christine Scarry’s private vocal practice (operating since 1995). She offers a vocal coaching and repetiteur service across a wide range of genres, from pop to jazz to rock, with particular expertise in musical theatre and vocal health/science. As she received much of her own musical education by way of scholarship, Christine awards the Red Alchemy Voice Scholarship (by open competitive audition) on an annual basis.

Christine has a proven track record in contributing to the success of actors and singers: her clients are currently playing leading roles on Broadway, the West End, and major Irish venues including The Abbey Theatre and The Gate Theatre.

Christine was a founding faculty member of the first-ever musical theatre degree course in Ireland, where she lectured in Voice, Acting and Music Theatre History, and she continues to be active as a guest lecturer and masterclass facilitator. She is a member of AOTOS and the British Voice Foundation.

In addition to vocal technique for Acting and Singing, Christine's core areas of expertise are Acting Through Song and customising Individual Repertoire - both of which are vital to achieve success in the field of music theatre. She also has a specialist interest in the works of Stephen Sondheim. Christine has welcomed US Emmy Award-winner and Tony Nominee, Liz Callaway, to deliver a memorable performance workshop in Dublin and, on two previous occasions, has invited Broadway composer John Bucchino to present a masterclass of his work to a selection of Ireland's music theatre performers. She looks forward to working with them again in the future. Christine originally trained in voice and piano at the Conservatory of Music & Drama and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and she holds a first-class MA in Theatre Studies (Directing) from Dublin City University. She is currently on a postgraduate programme in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship at Trinity College, Dublin.
