Michael Cusack would recall how both Pat Nally and himself while walking through the Phoenix Park in Dublin seeing only a handful of people playing sports in the park so depressed them, that they agreed it was time to "make an effort to preserve the physical strength of our race." Nally organised a National Athletics Sports meeting in County Mayo in September 1879 which was a success, with Cusack organising a similar event in Dublin the following April.

So distressingly obvious was the callousness of the Westminster government to the horrors of the famine and so inhumane its policy, in declaring that the millions should perish rather than the corn market should be ‘’disturbed’’ by the action of the state, that coroners juries in several places, impanelled in the cases of famine victims, found on their verdict, on oath, ‘’Wilful murder against Lord John Russell’’ (the Premier) and his fellow cabinet ministers.

Young Ireland was a political and cultural movement in the 1840’s committed to an all-Ireland struggle for independence and democratic reform. Grouped around the Dublin weekly newspaper ‘’The Nation’’ it disagreed with Daniel O'Connell's Repeal Association, from which it separated in 1847.
In 1848, an unsuccessful insurrection was mounted by the Young Irelanders. Their leaders were well educated and included all religions. Who like the patriots of 1798, were wholly concerned with justice for the Catholic population who had recently achieved emancipation.

efore the Act of Union, the city of Dublin enjoyed a very successful social life among the upper classes, such as Doctors, Lawyers and Merchants and in particular the Castle set. They all enjoyed the sporting tournaments such as cricket, lawn tennis and croquet, which was invented in Dublin. Croquet originated from a game Irish locals used to play called ‘Crookey’ in 1834

Consistent with the position he had taken publicly in relation to rebellions of 1798 and 1803, O'Connell focused upon parliamentary representation and popular, but peaceful, demonstration to induce change. "No political change", he offered, "is worth the shedding of a single drop of human blood".

Sir Jonah Barrington (1756-1834) describes the closing scene of the Irish Parliament in 1800, in graphic details, as follows; ‘’The Commons House of Parliament, on the last evening, afforded the melancholy example of an independent people, betrayed, divided, sold and as a state annihilated. British clerks and officers, were smuggled into her parliament, to vote away, the constitution of a country, to which they were strangers and in which they had neither interest or connection.

They also had the evidence of another eye-witness, Jamie Hope. The soldier witness, Hugh Wheatly, perjured himself and it was proved he was of bad character. The person who did tender the oath was a well known member of the Society, William McKeever, who subsequently escaped to America.

Pamela de Genlis, born Stéphanie Caroline Anne Syms (1773-1831) and known as "Pamela". Her origins are uncertain, but she was described as an adopted daughter of Félicité de Genlis; it is usually assumed that she was an unacknowledged daughter of Madame de Genlis and Louis Philip II, Duke of Orléans. However, there is a tradition in Fogo, Newfoundland, that she was the illegitimate daughter of an English naval officer, was taken to England and ended up in the Genlis household.
