Photographing a Bar Mitzvah at Masada where things go wrong, what do you do?
This is the story of how a photo shoot of a family from Colorado who had a Bar Mitzvah for their son in Masada got more complicated than expected
When I scheduled the bar mitzvah with Nikki I was sure that the spring weather in April would be pleasant for photography and that everything would go according to plan.
But, separate planning and the weather had other plans, on the first day of the Passover holiday the weather took a turn and it rained all over the country.
I was optimistic that the rain would not reach Masada's historical site, where it rarely falls.
But, there are always exceptions to every rule.
Suddenly the winds started to pick up.
Then, shortly after, the rain appeared. Everyone's clothes and hair began to blow in the wind and the guests all covered their heads with pieces of clothing.
We moved from place to place.
We held the Bar Mitzvah celebration three times.
I decided to take a photo anyway. I covered my camera under clothes and an umbrella and took pictures of everything.
People with their hair blowing in the wind and rain shelter under their clothes.
The videographer also recorded all the interesting moments.
Once the images were developed we saw that we had some very unique images.
Nikki looked like a model with her hair blowing in the wind.
The bar mitzvah boy, his brother and father all looked as if a fan was blowing on them, like in the pictures you see in magazines. People looked funny, there is a lot of humor in the pictures.
The family was enamored with the creative images, shaped by the wind and rain, and chose these in particular. There is no doubt that they will never forget such a special day, thanks to the photos that will keep the memory forever.
