Tu B'Av, the Jewish holiday of love, historically was a day of joy, marking the celebration of unity and connection. In temple times, it was a day when young women would dress in white and dance in the vineyards, inviting love and new beginnings. It was a day which brought optimism to the lives of wedding producers.

In Israel today, we bear witness to the unbearable pain of love torn apart. Our loved ones are still being held hostage in Gaza, our partners, husbands and wives, have the pages of their love ripped out.

There are thousands of people whose lives and love have been shattered, blasted and scattered in our arid dust. Today, this Tu B'Av will try to bring a message of love’s resilience but it's really hard.

Love is the essence of humanity, it's our oxygen. It thrives not just in times of peace but also in the darkest moments. Love is fueled by something that transcends all boundaries. Tonight and tomorrow on Tu B'Av, we honour the power of love, we offer a prayer for the safe return of our hostages, for couples to be reunited, and for love to light our lives everywhere and heal our hearts.

I live in a country where we used to say Shabbat Shalom (Have a peaceful Sabbath) but now we say Shabbat Sheket, (have a quiet Sabbath - ie may there be no rockets.)

I live in a country where we used to say before Jewish holidays Chag Sameach, Happy festival but now we say Chag Ragua Vesheket -or Chag Sameach K**a Sh' Efshar Have a quiet and drama-less festival or Have as Happy a Festival as possible (under the circumstances.)

I live in a country where this Pesach families will be making Seder night without a loved one. Some have a family member who was brutally murdered on that dreadful Shabbat of October 7th, some have a soldier who lost his/her life protecting our fragile country and some have a loved one still being held hostage somewhere in the darkness of Gaza.

As a nation we ache, we weep and we bleed.

We pray for all of our hostages to be released and sent home to their families, safe & sound, healthy in spirit & body.

We pray that all our soldiers stay safe and unharmed and come home unscathed and well. We pray that one day we will not need an army to protect our borders.

We pray and look forward to a brighter future where the world (and our small corner in it) is rid of the threat of vile terrorists.

Wishing us a Chag Ragua Vesheket and as much as possible a Chag Sameach
