After the Varmala ceremony, the Kanyadaan ritual takes place. Kanyadaan, meaning “giving away the bride” in Sanskrit, is a symbolic marriage ritual for the Bride’s parents and the couple. The Father of the Bride take’s his daughters right hand and places it in the Groom’s right hand, requesting for him to accept his daughter as his equal partner. This ritual signifies both the acceptance of the Bride’s Father and his official approval to give his daughter away.

After joining the two hands, ‘Hastamelap’, the Mother of the Bride pours sacred water on to the palm of her husband’s hands, allowing it to flow through his fingers onto his daughters hand and ultimately to the groom’s hand as well. Rituals are chanted during this process and the curtain between the couple is lowered once Kanyadaan has been observed.

Saptapadi quite literally translates from Sanskrit to ‘seven steps’. Many are familiar with images across the Internet of Indian Brides leading their Grooms around the fire pit at the Mandap, but few know the significance of these steps.

The couple takes seven full circles, walking clockwise around the agni, representing the seven principles and promises they make to each other; each step is referred to as a ‘phere’.

The following is a list of the promises the couple makes as they complete each full circle. While the couple is making their rounds, the priest dictates mantras pertaining to each specific phere. Each of these pheras signifies a specific meaning for both the Bride and Groom – complementary meanings that ensure that they will work as a unit to make this marriage successful, healthy, and prosperous.

4. Let us acquire knowledge, happiness and harmony by mutual love, respect and trust

Mandap ceremony holds utmost importance on the day of the wedding. This is because all the significant rituals are performed during the mandap ceremony. In India, weddings take place in accordance with the age old customs and traditions. It is a very meticulous process and is fulfilled with the feeling that it is a one time affair. As a result, parents on both the sides do not leave any stone unturned in organizing a prosperous wedding for their kids.

This attributes to the fact that Indian weddings are around five day long. There are a number of rituals that take place before, after and on the wedding day itself. Mandap ceremony is also such ritual. After the var mala ceremony is over, the couple is blessed by the elderly people of both the families. This is followed by the mandap ceremony, which is performed under a canopy supported on four pillars. This is called Mandap. It is usually made of bamboo and is decorated with red and silver colors.

The four pillars of the mandap signify the parents on both sides, which toiled hard to bring their children up. The mandap ceremony usually takes place at the house of the bride or otherwise it is held at the wedding venue itself. All the rituals during the mandap ceremony are performed in front of the sacred fire and hymns recited by the priest, from Vedas.

In India, the baraat is one of the most celebrated customs. The baraat is a wedding procession that is taken out from the groom’s side on his wedding day.

This custom basically revolves on the traveling of the groom from his home to the venue of the wedding on a mare with his family and friends celebrating along the way, often with song and dance.

In some cultures, the baraat begins with the custom of tying the groom’s sehra i.e. special veil for the face made of flowers, beads or any other material other than cloth, which is tied to the groom’s turban. The next custom is the sawaari or the climbing of the groom on to the mare’s back in preparation for the journey to the venue. In certain cultures, the groom may make the journey on an elephant’s back as well. The baraat is a grand affair and can be a lengthy procession. If the venue of the wedding is too far away from the groom’s home, the baraat begins in front of the groom’s house and carries on for about an hour and then is paused temporarily. The procession is resumed again at the entryway of the venue and can carry on for another hour. The baraat is the first among the many rituals and ceremonies on the day of the wedding.

The word “Sangeet “ means music, but when it is used as a term to describe a celebratory event during an Indian wedding it translates to Music Night or Musical party. This musical night is a celebration of the union of not only the couple but the bonding of both families. It is here that both sides bring down their barriers and mingle in a fun environment. It is a celebration that can be as lavish or as toned down as the families can afford. It’s usually held a day before the wedding. It may be held in a huge hotel room to accommodate all wedding guests, or it may be a small affair at the bride’s home. In some events men and women get separated due to their interests, for example men –booze, women- henna, younsters-dance. But most of the sangeet parties are huge and loud and every bit like a reception but super fun.

This one is a snap from a sangeet sandhya at SaathSangath with Falguni Pathak!

At Saath Sangath, we are all about the traditions.

Based on the couple's horoscopes, the Priest determines the most auspicious day to conduct the marriage and time to start ceremony. The calculation is derived from Hindu Vedic Astrology and is of utmost importance in order to avoid the presence of evil eye at the wedding. This is called muhurat is and we plan the wedding ceremonies according to the traditions.

Saath Sangath

In the year 1995, we had started the Swagat Party Plot. Very next year in 1996 to support decoration and other infrastructure, we launched our firm named Ambica Decorators. With the successful journey of 10 years, we brought the ideal place called Saath Sangath, for an auspicious occasion like engagement, musical night. Theme based weddings, reception, corporate events etc in 2006. After the ostentatious achievement of Saath Sangath in year 2011, we moved towards with an event management company named Safal Events.
