Dancer Abhayalakshmi

Sringara (Sanskrit: शृङ्गार, śṛṅgāra) is one of the nine rasas, usually translated as erotic love, romantic love, or as attraction or beauty. Rasa means "flavour", and the theory of rasa is the primary concept behind classical Indian arts including theatre, music, dance, poetry, and sculpture. Much of the content of traditional Indian arts revolves around the relationship between a man and a woman. The primary emotion thus generated is Sringara. The romantic relationship between lover and beloved is a metaphor for the relationship between the individual and the divine.

“Consciousness expresses itself through creation. This world we live in is the dance of the creator. Dancers come and go in the twinkling of an eye but the dance lives on. On many an occasion when I am dancing, I have felt touched by something sacred. In those moments, I felt my spirit soar and become one with everything that exists.”

The story of the play is taken from the Mahabharat. Yudhishtira gambles away his clan and kingdom and goes on exile. Panchali is dragged in the middle of court and Kauravas insult her in all possible ways. Later Krishna starts reconciliation efforts after the Pandavas return from exile.
But Panchali pleads with him not to help Pandavas reconcile, and let the war happen. In the war of Kurukshetra an angry Bheema kills Dussasana, drinks his blood and anoints Panchali’s hair with that. Raudra Bheema excelled in her performance and gave goosebumps to many, Parvathy as Duryodhana and Haripriya as Panchali excelled, music was beautiful (Kalanilayam Rajeev & Harishankar on vocals) and percussion (Kalamandalam Aneesh on mridangam and Sadhanam Jithin and Kalamandalam Ganesh on chenda) was exhilarating!
‘Duryodhana Vadham’ last evening at Purandhara Bhawan organized by BCKA Bangalore Club for Kathakali & the Arts and Indiara Nagar Sangeetha Sabha.

Kathakali, a religious dance-drama tradition, originated in Kerala, in southern India. Kathakali literally means enactment of stories. Traditionally it is a male dominated performing art practiced
by the warrior caste. The style evolved in the 17th century from techniques derived from Sanskrit classical text, regional ritualistic folk theatre and traditional art forms that included dance movements, facial expressions, elaborate hand gestures, music, theatre and martial art.

The transformation of human actors into the shape and personality of gods, titans and demons of the netherworld is unique to Kathakali making Aharya Abhinaya (enactment of stories, while dressed in the assumed get-up of the mythological characters) the basis of the dance form.

The art of Kathakali make-up has profound undertones of feeling and mood associated with it. It is cultivated, not only with great skill and care, but almost as a ritual, so that through this prolonged process, which begins several hours before the performance, the actor will grow into the symbolic character he is to portray through a gradual involvement.

The gestural language of Kathakali is a grammatically complete language of hand symbols equivalent to speech. Stylised eye movement is a technique unique to Kathakali. Ayurvedic massage is part and parcel of the Kathakali training and performance tradition.

In Hinduism, Ganga is said to cleanse one's sins and bathing in its sacred waters purifies one's inner soul. She is also known as "Tri-path-gamini", which means "the traveler of the three worlds", which are the ether world, earth and netherworld. It is for this very reason that Hindus immerse one's mortal remains in the sacred river for the river grants eternal bliss.
Ganges water is also used in all the religious ceremonies.
