📜 Historical Roots:

Raja Shashanka established the Bengali calendar, Bongabdo, in 594 CE, marking the beginning of a new era. This coincided with his coronation, symbolizing a fresh chapter in Bengal's history.

🌞 Solar vs. Lunar:

Unlike the Islamic Hijri calendar, the Bengali calendar is solar-based, rooted in Bengal's agricultural rhythms. This played a crucial role in agricultural tax collection and administration.

🗓️ Akbar's Influence?:

While there's a popular narrative attributing the start of the Bengali calendar to Akbar, historical evidence suggests otherwise. The antiquity of Bongabdo predates his reign.

History of National Anthem of India 🇮🇳 🙏

The Free India Centre, the predecessor of the Azad Hind Government (Provisional Government of Free India) set up by Netaji on 21st October 1943 in Singapore, was given formal recognition by a number of countries including Germany, Italy and Japan, and had diplomatic ties with them. The Free India Centre also had a flag, which was similar to the present day Indian Tri-colour but with a Springing Tiger in the centre. Netaji also introduced “Jai Hind” as a form of greeting fellow Indians.
What was missing was a “National Anthem”. Netaji called a meeting which discussed several options, and ultimately decided that the poem “Jana Gana Mana” composed by Rabindranath Tagore should be put to music as the National Anthem of Free India. Dr Ambik Majumdar, who was well-versed in musical notation, adapted the words to song. He then played the tune on the piano, while another Indian present Dr Mukherjee sang. The final version approved by Netaji was then given to Dr Eigel Kruettge, the Conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg, who made some minor changes to the notations for the orchestra. This is the version that prevails until today.
On 11th of September 1942, the Indo-German Association was founded at the Rathaus (Townhall) in Hamburg and the celebrations took place at the Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg in the presence of Netaji. The Lord Mayor of Hamburg, representatives of the German government, diplomats and well-known personalities, were present. On this occasion, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg played the National Anthems of Germany and the Free India Centre.
This seminal event marked the birth of Jana Gana Mana as the National Anthem of Free India. Mr N.G.Ganpulay, a close associate of Netaji and an active member of the Free India Centre, recorded the performance on tape. After his death, this tape was handed over to All India Radio for their archives.
Jana Gana Mana was adopted as the National Anthem by the Azad Hind Government (Provisional Government of Free India) on 21st October 1943. When India became independent on 15thAugust 1947 no decision had been taken regarding a National Anthem. A delegation from India attended the UN General Assembly in New York later in 1947. One of the members of the delegation carried a recording of Jana Gana Mana produced in Singapore. He handed this recording over to the UN Orchestra, which then played Jana Gana Mana along with the National Anthems of other participating countries. This was much appreciated by all those who were present.
On hearing this, Jawaharlal Nehru made an historic statement on 25 August 1948 in the Constituent Assembly that Vande Mataram would remain the National Song but Jana Gana Mana would be more appropriate as the National Anthem as it had already become very popular in South-East Asia as the National Anthem of the Azad Hind Government. On 24 January 1950, President Dr Rajendra Prasad officially declared in the Constituent Assembly that Jana Gana Mana would be the National Anthem from the 26th January 1950 when India became a Republic.
Ms Chitra Narain was given the task of verifying the origin and history of the tape. After extensive research involving many contemporary witnesses in Germany and elsewhere, she came to the definitive conclusion that this was the very first recording of Jana Gana Mana as the National Anthem of Free India. All India Radio then broadcast a programme in 1980 called “National Anthem born in Exile”.
