Dance is a vital urge in a man. It is present in every kriya or activity surrounding us, from the buzzing of the bees to the swaying of the leaves in the wind, from the flight of birds to the gait of elephant, from the rising of sun to the stillness of night. In India dance has developed as a form of spiritual expression. The dancer is considered to be a vehicle through which both the performers and the spectators can attempt to catch a glimpse of the Sublime by the submergence of the Self. Classical dance in India is therefore not regarded as a form of entertainment, but rather a spiritual moment shared by all those present.
