The Champion who destroyed himself.

Mike Tyson, the man with RDX in his gloves was born today in 1966. Tyson is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. His reign as World champion was brief but spectacular. Tyson won his first 19 professional fights by knockout, 12 of them in the first round. With a knockout percentage of 88%, he was ranked first on ESPN's list of "The Hardest Hitters in Heavyweight History". Sky Sports described him as "perhaps the most ferocious fighter to step into a professional ring".

He had an unhappy childhood. Soon after he was born, his stepfather abandoned the family and went away. Tyson's mother looked after him and her other children. But when Tyson was 16, she died leaving him in charge of his boxing coach Cus D'Amato. The coach later adopted Tyson as his son.

Throughout his childhood, Tyson lived in neighborhoods with a high crime rate. He was repeatedly caught committing petty crimes and fighting those who ridiculed his high-pitched voice and lisp. By the age of 13, he had been arrested 38 times.

Tyson's emerging boxing ability was discovered by Bobby Stewart, a juvenile detention center counselor and former boxer. Stewart considered Tyson to be an outstanding fighter and trained him for a few months before introducing him to Cus D'Amato.

But the father figure D'Amato died in November 1985, relatively early into Tyson's professional career, and it is said that the early deaths of his mother and then his coach-cum-father were the catalysts to the formation of Tyson's troubled personality.

About his mother Tyson once said : "I never saw my mother happy with me and proud of me for doing something. She only knew me as being a wild kid running the streets. I never got a chance to talk to her or know about her. Professionally, it has had no effect, but it's crushing emotionally and personally."

Did all these unhappy memories lead him on a mission to destroy ? Inside the ring he destroyed his opponents. Outside the ring he destroyed himself. Tyson's marriage to his first wife Robin Givens was especially tumultuous, with allegations of violence, spousal abuse, and mental instability on Tyson's part.

Once he attributed his wild acts to having eaten too much red meat when young. He then turned vegan. But he gave up veganism too after a while. Then he reportedly changed his religion and became a Muslim like his idol Muhammad Ali. He took the name of Malik Abdul Aziz. But in 2013 in an interview he said : "The more I see of churches and mosques, the more I see the devil."

He was, and probably still is, an insecure and complex person and he has made plenty of wrong decisions in his life. But he made sure that he would attain perfection in the only thing that he could do well. He made sure to be remembered always as the hardest puncher that boxing has ever seen.

Wrestler KD Jadhav was the first athlete from independent India to win an Olympic medal.

He did not have money to fund his trip for the 1952 Helsinki Games, but his college principal mortgaged his house and other villagers contributed to raise enough money.

Jadhav went on to win the bronze medal!🥉
