Journey in their Joothas : A series chronicling the stories of creative entrepreneurs. Featuring Bina Rao of Journey in their Joothas!

"Sustainable fashion is a relatively new term. All around the world, there are new terms coming up every day for sustainable fashion, it’s catching on quick, on runways, in stores, nationally and internationally. But when I started off in fashion many years ago, it was a relatively new concept. I realized that there was so much untapped talent with weavers in India but they weren’t getting anywhere close to their due for their extraordinary skill.

When I started Creative Bee textiles, I broke all the norms of the local cooperatives. My motto has always been – ‘Earn your bread and help others earn their bread’. I hired weavers and paid them what they demanded, and I realized that there was no greed there. The weavers were and still are, honest, only asking for fair compensation for their work and skill. We made it a point, at Creative Bee Textiles to work only with sustainable, fair-trade practices.

Zero rejections, fair wages and decent working conditions are the parameters around which we built our business, in accordance with sustainable working practices. We make electricity free working environments a working mandate at Creative Bee textiles. We continue to work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals or the UNSDG’s and are fulfilling many of these goals, including reducing poverty, decent work and economic growth and responsible consumption and production.

The highlights of my journey? Hosting people from all of over the world who want an experience at our natural dye farm and touching the lives of thousands of weavers and impacting them in meaningful ways."

Bina Rao is doing a day long workshop with Jxtapose on the following Sunday (27th March). She will be hosting an interactive block printing workshop in her studio space and we promise you, if you're into textile and fabric design, this one is a must-attend! DM for details!
