National Space Day Lecture

August 23, 2025 5:00 pm Saturday

Join us for a special lecture tracing the fascinating journey of satellites, from their Cold War origins to their transformative role in today’s digital age. This talk explores the key technological, political, and scientific milestones that have shaped satellite development over the last seven decades.

It will trace the rapid evolution through the 20th century—communications, Earth observation, weather forecasting, navigation, and defense—unpacking how satellites became essential to both everyday life and global geopolitics.

As we move into the 21st century, the session will highlight the shift from large, government-built satellites to small satellite constellations, private space ventures, and India's growing capabilities through missions like CartoSAT, NISAR culminating in modern projects like ISRO’s and private sector participation.

Attendees will gain insight into:

The technological advancements driving satellite miniaturization

The rise of CubeSats, nanosats, and mega-constellations like Starlink

India’s growing strategic and commercial footprint in the satellite domain

Whether you're a student, a space enthusiast, or simply curious about how satellites shape our modern world, this talk will provide a compelling overview of where we've been—and where we're going next.

Discussion

August 16, 2025 7:00 pm Saturday

Title - Time is out of joint - Aug 16th, 2025. V Geetha is a feminist historian, writer and translator. She has been associated with the Indian women's movements for over three decades. She writes in Tamil and English on caste, gender, labour and education. Her published work includes 'Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and the Question of Socialism in India' and 'Undoing Impunity: Speech after Sexuao Violence'.

At 78, the India we have inherited seems particularly inchoate and headed for disaster. Is the present moment exceptional in its evil? Or is it the culmination of a history we have not fully reckoned with? V. Geeta draws on anti caste and feminist thought to suggest how we may 'read' our times. The title itself is of course from Shakespeare's Hamlet, signifying a moment when Hamlet's entire world falls out of sync.

Book Discussion : TELUGU JAADALU

Discussion

June 05, 2025 6:30 pm Thursday

Open discussion on the recently published book 'Telugu Jaadalu', by the well known Telugu writer R.M. Umamaheshwara Rao.

Based on the travels of the author alongwith two close friends, the book offers a moving portrayal, of the Telugus living and surviving in many lands far off from the two Telugu states, their distinct histories, and their struggle to hold on to their linguistic identity and cultural memory against severe odds. For most mainland Telugus, these stories would come as a shock as well as a pleasant surprise about the enterprising spirit of the Telugus through the ages in seeking better fortunes in distant lands. The book also raises a stirring call to the mainland Telugus to connect with the lost brethern and help revive and fortify their liguistic and cultural identity.
