Politics of Skhism's Evolution

Talk

April 26, 2024 7:30 pm Friday

Title: Politics of Sikhism's Evolution and Consequences thereof.

About the talk: From a rudimentary collective after the tenth Guru... Sikhism as an organized religion, evolved through many political challenges from extant religions. While surviving various onslaughts for a couple of centuries, it finally took control of its institutions that still bear scars of the violence done to the original thought of the 10 gurus initiated by Guru Nanak's teachings. This has impacted the current socio-political scene as well as the state of Sikh politics in Punjab.

About Dr. Jasveen Jairath: Dr. Jasveen Jairath is from an academic and research background with a focus on the politics of water management. She has lately been active as a social and political activist on various human rights issues in Hyderabad. She hails from Punjab, has a first degree in engineering, and obtained her doctorate in economics from JNU Delhi.

March 30, 2024 7:30 pm Saturday

"Aadhe Adhure" is a compelling theatre production that delves deep into the intricacies of human relationships and the unfulfilled desires that haunt us all. Through brilliant performances and a poignant script, it tells the story of Savitri, a woman trapped between societal expectations and personal dreams. This raw and honest portrayal of lifes complexities challenges conventions and leaves the audience with a profound sense of introspection, making "Aadhe Adhure" a theatrical masterpiece that lingers in the heart and mind long after the curtains fall. After a long hiatus, the phenomenal classic play is coming to Hyderabad. This time, its being presented by the theatre group Play of Shiva and is being designed and directed by Subhash Gupta. DÉJÀ VU a documentary by Bedabrata Pain

2024 began with farmers all over Europe demonstratively raising their voices in protest, while farmers in India re-launch a protest march to Delhi alongside other demonstrations, with MSP at the forefront of their demands.

Against the backdrop of the global rise in farmers’ movement comes the documentary “Déjà vu”. The documentary began in 2021. Barely two months since the launch of the farm laws in India to promote market reforms. In the middle of Covid and a frigid American winter, four Indians were on a ten-thousand-kilometer drive through the farming heartland of America. Because, as it turns out that four decades ago, similar market reforms were ushered in in America. A more classic case of “back to the future” perhaps could not be found. How did the reforms turn out? Who benefitted? Who lost out? Is it the farmers, the consumers, or the corporates? What impact did loss of MSP or ushering in of contract farming have on farmers? Through personal experiences and human stories of small farmers in America, Deja Vu is chronicle of a four decade long history of a much-trumpeted elixir – and a cautionary tale for India. Déjà Vu is the confluence where past meets the future.

DIRECTOR: Bedabrata Pain One of the inventors of CMOS digital camera technology that enabled cell-phones to movie cameras - Bedabrata Pain was an award-winning senior research scientist at NASA and Caltech. He holds over 90 patents and is an inductee to the US Space Technology Hall of Fame. Cybernetic Census and The Politics of Numbers in Digital India - A Talk by Srinivas Kodali

Srinivas Kodali takes us through how modern-day digital governance treats humans as numbers with the mathematical science of cybernetics, which is used to reshape the republic.

The Census has been a project of control for colonial actors in India, these colonial practices were modified to help achieve India's development goals under PC Mahalnobis. Mahalnobis, as the architect of the modern census in India, evolved practices that have been exported from India to the rest of the world. Present-day census applications in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been heavily relying on cybernetics to create 360-degree profiles of citizens. This form of real-time cybernetic census will be the future in Digital India. The talk will look into the discontents of numbers and how modern-day digital governance treats humans as numbers with the mathematical science of cybernetics, which is being used to reshape the republic. It will touch on Digital Governance, Representation, Surveillance, Control, and Freedoms in Digital Societies.

Amudhan R.P. Born and raised in a rural and small-town background, Amudhan developed his liking for cinema by watching popular Tamil films with his mother, Pushpam, a farmer, while sitting on the sand-bed in thatched and temporary cinema halls called Touring Talkies. Cinema has always been a collective activity/place for Amudhan, in which people from different backgrounds come together and imagine multiple worlds in a given short time. After completing his Post Graduation in Development Communication from Madurai Kamraj University and a two-year stint at the Centre for Development of Instructional Technology (CENDIT), New Delhi, Amudhan set up MARUPAKKAM (The Other Side, in Tamil), a media action group in Madurai with his like-minded friends to produce, screen and disseminate documentary films, in 1996.

Lamakaan, the open cultural space of Hyderabad is celebrating the 14th Annual festival.

Lamakaan was founded in 2010 by a group of Hyderabadis on a small property off the busy Road Number 1 in Banjara Hills, in a quiet lane. Its founding vision was to create a hub for progressive cultural practices. Over the last ten years, it has emerged as a sustainable model for creating diverse communities of practitioners in many fields.

Lamakaan also proactively invites and supports several initiatives spanning from scientific organizations like the Lamakaan Amateur Radio Society to literary meets of Bazm-e-Sukhan.

The events and programs held at Lamakaan are curated and mentored by 14 accomplished individuals from different fields. These curators have complete freedom and independence to accept or reject proposed events, produce their own events and bring programs of their choice to Lamakaan. The trustees and the management of Lamakaan with a group of young volunteers keep the place running. Lamakaan is truly a successful experiment and model for creating infrastructure for open social spaces in urban centers across India.

Kranthi, Manager of Lamakaan, said, “Lamakaan 14th annual is a special weekend. We look back on this great journey that inspires us as we look, hope, and aspire to a more inclusive, peaceful, equitable future. LAALI CHHAAYE RAHI HAI - A performance of the hori theme in thumri by Vidya Rao

Vidya Rao, the award-winning thumri maestro, will present some hori bandishes in the traditional thumri gayaki.

A large part of the thumri repertoire draws from calendrical rituals and the cycle of the seasons. The 40 days from Basant Panchami (this year on 14 February) to Holi (on 25 March) are marked by the singing of thumri, dadra, and songs derived from folk music that focus on the theme of holi, colour and spring. These bandishes draw from the Ganga-Jamuna traditions of both Sufi and Vaishnavi poetry, sung now in the bol-banao style of the courtly, romantic, poorabi thumri.

The artists Vidya Rao is a singer of poorab-ang thumri and allied forms. She is the disciple of Vidushis Naina Devi, Shanti Hiranand, and Girija Devi. She also writes on music and the performing arts. Shanti Bhushan Jha, tabla nawaz, is a much sought-after accompanist and a senior shagird of Ustad Akram Khan of Ajrara Gharana. He teaches at Delhi University’s Music Faculty. Ashique Kumar, on harmonium, is also a vocalist and the disciple of Pandit L K Pandit of Gwalior gharana. He is a professor at the Faculty of Music, Delhi University.

Shanti Swaroop on tanpura and vocal support, is a Hyderabad-based singer. A disciple of Vidushi N Rajam (violin), he is also trained in vocal khayal gayaki of Agra Gharana.
