Then we take a break to set up a Ghazal performance by Adnan Salem, a Ghazal singer who is going to sing Khumar Barabankvi's Ghazals at 8pm.

Sufism: Past and Present

The aim of this lecture is to trace the rise and development of Sufi spirituality during the early history of Islam on the one hand and the transition that took place during the later centuries on the other. Sufism is the phenomenon of intense Divine love (‘ishq), remembrance (zikr), contemplation (muraqibah), and beatific vision of God (ruyat-i bari-i taala). It is an exercise to purify the soul (ruh), self (nafs) and heart (dil). It is a transition from this world to the other world. It is a process where the Sufi remains subservient to the commands of God all the time, where his will becomes the Will of God. As Islam moved out of the confines of the Arabia, it imbibed local cultures, customs and traditions leading to the transition.
