Upcoming exhibition and photo-book
A note of gratitude
EtP marked its unique insignia in the realm of photography-art with our maiden venture “Project 365”. The pioneering public project saw 23 Indian and 2 International photographers unite under a single banner to share their passion for the art of “writing with light”. Ekalokam stands for “one world” and Project 365 did complete justice to this ideal by collectively creating 3000 photographs of ancient town Tiruvannamalai, which also happens to be the place where EtP is registered. Majority of the participating photographers were upcoming South Indian photographers and as is the intent of this organization, EtP is proud to have served as a platform for the young Indian photographers. Few leading photographers along with our Director have also contributed to this public photo-art project and their presence adds much value to the archive. This engaging journey had added much value to our organization as well and we take this opportunity to thank Project 365 photographers for their energy, determination and dedication in making this project a success. Many photo-enthusiasts have been in constant touch with us, showing keen interest in the progress of this project. Thank you, for your well wishes and support. The co-operation of the local public has been immense. We thank each of the supporters who have helped during the photo-shoot and also a big thanks to the public for allowing us to shoot them and the locale. We have had quite a few media coverage and it was with the support and enthusiasm of these journalists that we were able to have a larger reach for this rural photo-art project. Thank you !!!
Creating and preserving our Nation’s visual treasure is indeed a herculean task and in the absence of a prototype model to emulate, this innovative project had to carve its own strategies. And, in spite of all the limitations and challenges, this project has been successful in moving forwa
Project 365 - Tyndis, Muziris and Korkai
PROJECT 365 - Tyndis, Muziris and Korkai
Ancient Tamilakam (3rd century BCE – 4th century CE territory of present time South India) had maritime and overland commercial and cultural connections with Persia, Arabia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Rome, Mediterranean, China and Africa. As a peninsular subcontinent, Tamilakam enjoyed a privileged position in the economic and cultural exchanges between civilizations. Textiles from India were in demand in Egypt, East Africa, and the Mediterranean and, as trade between India and the Greco-Roman world increased, spices became the main export overtaking silk and other commodities. The sea ports of the Sangam period were also important gateways for cultural amalgamations and laid the foundation for a composite culture in the region.
Of the five major Sangam period ports, Muziris, Tyndis and Korkai have greater and more frequent mentions in Sangam literature. Muziris was a thriving seaport and urban centre (in present day Kerala) that dates back to the 1st century BCE. Repeated flood is believed to have destroyed the Kodungallur port city in 13th century CE. Tyndis (Thundi) was a major centre of trade between the Cheras and the Arabs. Korkai, on the shore of Bay of Bengal (in present day Tamil Nadu), was the capital and principal centre of trade of the early Pandya Kingdom, a well known centre of pearl fishery often mentioned in Sangam literature and classical western literature. Spices, pearls, diamonds and silk were exported to Egypt and Europe from these ports on the Southern coasts of India.
‘Project 365 tri-sangam ports' will collectively create photographs of the landscape, lifestyle, contemporary culture, art, architecture, people of these ports and its rich cultural connections across nations, which still form part of the local lifestyle. Two of these ancient ports are situated in Kerala, in and around Kodungallur and Ponnani. Korkai is located in Tamil Nadu, near Tuticorin. The project places special emphasis on the age-old

Project 365 Public Photo-Art Archive - Tiruvannamalai
EtP's maiden photo-art enterprise Project 365 marked the one year milestone in August 2015, with lots of success, driven by the participation and enthusiasm of numerous talented National and International photo-artists who proved to be an immense force, making enormous strides in the first attempt. The Project 365 team and the contributing photographers with their indefatigable energy and remarkable determination performed beyond expectations, eliciting tremendous response from the general public. The pilot phase of the project was organised in Tiruvannamalai, the ancient town where EtP is registered. Project 365 Tiruvannamalai has already visually recorded the Arunachala hill and the circumambulatory fourteen kilometre road that continue to keep alive millennia-old Saiva traditions. The 25 photographers have been successful in capturing esoteric visuals on their chosen topics. Everyday life, rare rituals and unusual scenes as they occur in the second decade of the 21st century are recorded as part of the project. It covers the modern Tiruvannamalai town and its medieval temples, remarkable for their architecture, modern religions like Islam and Christianity that have become part of the landscape for few centuries, the indigenous people and their subculture and how they fare today. One of the biggest achievements of the project would be the revival of photographic and printing techniques that have once been state-of-the-art, but now obsolete and slipping into oblivion. EtP has worked with success in imparting the know-how and expertise to the newer generations, who have little or no resources or centres for acquiring these skills. EtP Project 365 public photo archive (Tiruvannamalai) has a collection of about 3000 photographic images of this period, when a paradigm shift in the culture of the ancient town is happening.
The next phase of Project 365 will focus on the ancient tri-Sangam ports - Tyndis, Muziris and
