FROM NOTHING TO EVERYTHING
The thought of an all girls’ college after 12th used to be traumatic during my early BSc days. I had zero expectation and was ready to face all the consequences. 'Girls don't communicate unless they need something, girls don't share unless they get something, girls don't cheer up unless they themselves are winning, if necessary can pull you back to the trenches with their failed selves'-and what not. Listening to all
these as a girl was so weird. School was different. It used to be all girls too but the mixture of good and bad was pretty healthy and I never felt threatened. Yet I fell into the trap and had no optimism and whatsoever.
1.5yrs passed and we did nothing. We passed the exams but were so naive that the thought of fieldwork was merely same as a vacation to us. We weren't aware of what was yet to learn or what we failed to earlier. Now, the first ever fieldwork of our life was with two professors, both being women. The fact why I am mentioning
this is our parents were worried to their core at first to leave their teenage girls without a male individual. And I see nothing wrong with it. The concern was very much valid, although I protested with so much chest at that time (rather ranted my newly developed feministic views) . But as soon as we reached Ghatsila, emotions
changed. We felt vulnerable. We were drained both physically and mentally. We were so underprepared that everything seemed like a curriculum of higher studies. Even recognizing a joint seemed impressive and not elementary at all. Despite of being on the verge of collapsing ourselves, everybody used to babysit everybody. One of our professors used to treat us with dahi just so we could hydrate and cheer up. I was vibing with utter strangers who were supposed to be mean to me! They made me laugh, they made me feel safe, K. D palace became home to us. I remember one evening one of our professors woke up and started puking her bloody guts out. But as the next morning arrived she came to us and reassured that she had already surveyed the area we were gonna visit so that things go smooth and the day is more productive. We were shocked. How on the earth did she gather such stamina? Did we deserve it? That day I felt that my mediocrity was overlooked.
Both of our professors used to share the same institutions during their youth, the one I am in now. One day they just sat on the most ordinary looking rock and started reminiscing their days in the campus. It was so different for them than us. They were far from being batch mates due to their age gap, yet I saw a special bond as they talked about the past in front of us. Suddenly their topic shifted to Tiramisu and things started to feel so bizarrely
informal, simple, we felt at so much ease. Me and my friends picked up on this topic later as were sitting in the class and the conclusion was wholesome. We all saw a sisterhood rekindling that day. It was subtle but so inspiring. All girls, 26 of them-all felt safe and woke up with a new enthusiasm every day. The goal was to be best together, feel equal. No more of getting insulted for being students of a so called underdeveloped and underequipped institution. And best believe, we left the trenches we were in, not as friends but as sisters, as family. And those two ladies that guided us still stand as a role model in our eyes.

Ramtek এ JDC এর গল্পের ঠেক

Ramtek এর ফিল্ড টা ছিল আমাদের কলেজে জীবনের দ্বিতীয় ফিল্ড। স্বভাবতই সবার মতে দ্বিতীয় বর্ষের ছাত্রীরা হবে কিছুটা বেশি বোঝদার, পরিণত। কিন্তু, আমরা ছিলাম পুরোটাই উল্টো, আমাদের বাচ্ছামো টা তখন ও যেন কাটেনি। যাই হোক, আসল কথায় ফেরা যাক এবার। আমরা ramtek গিয়েছিলাম ওই নভেম্বরের শেষ সপ্তাহে এবং যাওয়া আসা মিলিয়ে মোট ১১ দিনের ফিল্ড ছিল। সবার মধ্যেই একটা অদ্ভুত উত্তেজনা দেখেছিলাম ramtek যাওয়া নিয়ে, কারণটা অবশ্য আমার অজানা। তবে আমার ব্যক্তিগত ভাবে জায়গা টা ভালোলেগেছিল বেশ। তবে, সেখানে তেমন কোনো ফসিল পাওয়া যায় না, তাই মন খারাপ ছিল যে আমার সংগ্রহে ফসিল এর সংখ্যা বাড়বে না ভেবে। এই ফিল্ড টা স্ট্রাকচারাল এর ফিল্ড হওয়ার দরুন রোজ শুধু মাপ ঝোক আর ক্যাম্প এ ফিরে ম্যাপ পইন্টিং করা, এটাকেই কিন্তু আসল খাটুনির ফিল্ড বলা চলে। যাই হোক, ক্যাম্পের কথায় বলি আমরা ছিলাম ramtek এর বিখ্যাত আম্বালা লেকের পাশের ধর্মশালায়। সেখানে অবশ্য আমরা এবং আমাদের শিক্ষক রা ছাড়াও ছিল অনেক বন্ধু, থুড়ি বাঁদর। তারা সুযোগ পেলেই ঘরে ঢুকে যাওয়া, জামাকাপড় টানার ক্ষমতা রাখত। আমাদের এক শিক্ষক অবশ্য যাওয়ার আগেই বলে দিয়েছিলেন তোমরা ওখানে গিয়ে বাঁদরামি না করলে ওরাও তোমাদের কিছু করবেনা। যাই হোক, এবার আসি এক ভয়ানক না ঠিক ভয়ানক নয়, এক মজার রাতের কথায়। ফিল্ডে গেছি আর রাত করে সবাই মিলে গল্প করবনা , টা তো হয় না। যেই ভাবা তেমন কাজ, মোটামুটি গোনা সাত- আটেক বন্ধু জড়ো হয়েছিল আমাদের রুমে, রাতের খাওয়া দাওয়ার পর। তারপর আর কি যা হওয়ার তাই, একথা থেকে সে কথা হতে হতে গল্প, হই – হট্টগোল যখন চূড়ান্তে হটাত এক শিক্ষক হাক দিলেন, “এই সেকেন্ড ইয়ার” বলে। আমাদের তো ডাক শুনে প্রাণ যায় যায় অবস্থা, তার একমাত্র কারণ কলেজে যাকে সবাই সমীহ করে চলে সেই তিনিই ডেকেছিলেন। তারপর আর কি করার, আমাদের ই একজন দরজা খুলে বেরোলো শুনতে স্যার কি বলছেন। আর বলা কি যে সে বলা একেবারে কলকাতা পাঠিয়ে দেওয়ার হুমকিও ছিল তাতে। আমরা তো ভয়ে গুটিসুটি মেরে ছিলাম পুরো। বাকি সবাই তো কেউ বাথরুমে কেউ ত চাদর মুড়ি দিয়ে লুকিয়ে ছিল। সে এক হুলস্থূল কণ্ড চলেছিল মাঝ রাত অবধি। কেউ তো সাহস করে দরজা খুলে নিজের ঘরে যাওয়া তো দূর পা বার করতেই ভয় পাচ্ছিল , কারণ বাইরে দালানে স্বয়ং স্যার হাটাহাটি করছিলেন আমাদের হাতে নাতে ধরার জন্য। তারপর, প্রায় শেষ রাতের দিকে বাকিরা উঠে নিজের রুমে গেল এবং একটু ঘুমিয়েই আবার উঠে ফিল্ড ওয়ার্ক এও গেলাম। এই এক অন্যতম মজার ঘটনা ঘটেছিল ramtek ফিল্ডে। যখন মনে পড়ে ঘটনাটা ভীষণ হাসিও পায় নিজেদের কথা ভেবে।

"Who is this KDS?"

৮ ই ডিসেম্বর, ২০২৩: ঘাটশিলায় সেকেন্ড ইয়ারের ফিল্ড করতে এসে গত দুদিন ধরে বৃষ্টির জন্য কে.ডি প্যালেসে আটকে ছিলাম। তবে আজ মেঘের ভ্রুকুটি উপেক্ষা করে স্যার ম্যামদের সাথে বেরিয়ে পড়েছিলাম ফিল্ড করতে। বম্বে রোডের পাশে নাকড়াডুঙ্গা হিলকে ফিল্ড সেরে পৌঁছলাম পাটমহুলিয়া। সেখানে পাটমহুলিয়া রিজ বরাবর এন্টিফর্ম-সিনফর্ম ট্রেস করে প্রথম দিনের ফিল্ডওয়ার্ক শেষ হলো। গেস্ট হাউসে ফিরে স্নান, খাওয়া সেরে রেজিউমে লিখতে বসলাম। লেখা হলে খাতাটা এ.কে স্যারের কাছে জমা দিয়ে আসলাম। রাতে খাওয়াদাওয়া হলে খাতা আনতে গিয়ে একটা অদ্ভুত ব্যাপার লক্ষ্য করলাম, স্যার খাতার প্রথম পাতায় বড়ো বড়ো করে লিখে রেখেছেন, " Who is this KDS ?"। তখন মনে পড়লো আমি নিজেই খাতার প্রথম পাতায় পুরো নাম না লিখে সংক্ষেপে 'KDS' লিখে রেখেছি। তারপর রুমে ফিরে এসে বন্ধুদের সাথে বেশ কিছুক্ষণ গল্পগুজব করে রাত দুটোর মধ্যে শুয়ে পড়লাম।

ঘুম থেকে উঠে মাথাটা কেমন যেনো ঝিমঝিম করছিল। খুব চেনা একটা ডাকে আমার আচ্ছন্নতা কেটে গেলো, " ঠাকুরদা, আসি গো, আজ থেকে আমাদের জিওলজির ফিল্ডওয়ার্ক শুরু হচ্ছে, তুমি ভালো ভাবে থেকো"। আমি বেশ কিছুক্ষণ ফ্যালফ্যাল করে তাকিয়ে থাকলাম ছেলেটির মুখের দিকে । বিছানার পাশে একটা ছোট্ট ক্যালেন্ডার ঝুলছিলো, কিছুক্ষণ পর সেটার দিকে চোখ পড়তেই আমার কাছে সবটা জলের মতো পরিষ্কার হয়ে গেলো। ক্যালেন্ডারে লেখা 'ডিসেম্বর, ২০৮৬'। পুরোনো দিনের অনেক কথাই এখন মনে পড়ে, অতীতের টুকরো টুকরো ছবি ভেসে ওঠে চোখের সামনে, তবে অতীত ও বর্তমানের সীমারেখাটা ক্রমশ সূক্ষ্ম থেকে সূক্ষ্মতর হয়ে উঠছে।

ফোনের গ্যালারি ঘেঁটে একটা ছবি বের করলাম, একটা সাদা পাতা আর তাতে জ্বলজ্বল করছে একটা লাইন, "Who is this KDS?"।

আমার চোখ দুটো ঝাপসা হয়ে এলো...

Rejuvenating the Ramtek Diaries

Amidst the hectic academic classes we eagerly waited for our field trip to Ramtek , Maharashtra. Those seven days nurtured our monotonous lifestyle exceptionally. We stayed in a Dharmashala, which was surrounded by the picturesque mountains of Ramtek. The weather, the serenity, the landscape eventually left us on cloud nine.
Unlike other field camps we had to meticulously arrange every necessities for our living, be it from renting beds to purchasing drinkable water for each one of us. From bathing in those freezing water to tackling with the night time stinging mosquitoes converted us from ‘I can’t do this anymore‘ to ‘Chill guys, we can handle it!!’
Adding to the thrill, here comes our center of attraction- The waggish monkeys. From waking up in the morning to having lunch they always kept an eye on us. Ironically they did no harm to us .It was fun and scary at the same time to watch those notorious ones.
Another horrific takeaway from our field was that there was a burning ghat near Ambala lake and rumors broadened that souls wandered around the terrace of Dharmashala which forbade us from going there for a while still we went there since internet connection was more important than the wandering souls.
Apart from rigorous field work and numerous dip strike measurements we literally rejuvenated ourselves through these sweet little occupying moments filled with jars of friendship and vividness imprinted the trace of one of the best field trip till date .

Is it "ফসি(ib)ল"??

জীবনে adventurous কিছু করতে খুবই কম সংখ্যক মানুষ Geology নামক এই বিষয় নিয়ে পড়তে আসে। তারপর আসে ডাক্তার, ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হওয়ার ইঁদুর দৌড় থেকে রেহাই পেতে , কিন্তু কিছু interesting বিষয় নিয়ে পড়াশোনা করতে আসা মানুষ। আমি , এই দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীর পতাকা উত্থাপনকারী। Geology নিয়ে পড়ার আগে , Geology সর্ম্পকে কিছু না জেনে , বন্ধুর থেকে শুনে যে - বছরে একবার "field work" এ নিয়ে যাবে ১২ দিন এর জন্য ; সেই লোভে রীতিমতো তিন বার কলেজ বদল করে , আশুতোষ কলেজ এ Geology honours নিয়ে admisson নেওয়া । তাছাড়া আর একটা সুবিধা , হয় পাথর নিয়ে পড় নয় কেউ বিরক্ত করলে পাথর ছুড়ে মারো। সে যাক ওটা পরের কথা।

এবার আসি আসল কথায় , যে কারণে এই রচনা রচিত হচ্ছে সেই কারণে ঢোকা যাক। আমরা অর্থাৎ Geology 1 year (bsc) students আগের বছর নভেম্বর এর 22 তারিখ মাইথন এর উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা দি, আমাদের জীবনের প্রথম field work করব বলে। স্বভাবতই সবাই খুব উৎসাহী , সবার মনে এক চোরা উত্তেজনা কি হবে হবে , আমরা কি বিশাল কিছু আবিস্কার করে আসব ?? কেউ কি পাহাড়ে হারিয়ে যাবে ?? আমাদের হোটেল এ কি রাতে ভূত ঘুরবে ?? নাকি টিচার রা খুব কড়া চোখে নজরে রাখবে ?? এই এত সব ভাবনার মধ্যে , কোনো একদিন আমাদের প্রফেসর DM sir, আমাদের বলেছিলেন, মাইথন এর আসে পাশে কোন এক জায়গায় , FOSSIL পাওয়া যায় , আমারও নাকি পেতে পারি।

ভূত - পাহাড় - খনি আবিস্কার সব কিছু থেকে আমাদের পাখির চোখের নজর গিয়ে পরে Fossil আবিষ্কারে। এভাবেই একদিন একদিন করে যায় , আর আমাদের উৎসাহ বাড়তে থাকে , কবে আসবে সেই দিন ?? কবে আমরা 1st year student থেকে ফসিল আবিষ্কারক এর তকমা পাবো ??? তারপর জুনিয়ররা এলে ওদের সামনে গর্ব করে বলবো "জানিস ?? আমরা কারা ?? ফসিল খুঁজেছিলাম আমরা , হুহু !"

বহু প্রতীক্ষার পর (মোটে ৮ দিন বাদে) একদিন দূরে field করে গাড়ি করে ফেরার পথে , DM sir বললেন , "সবাই নাম! এখানে lystosaurus এর ফসিল পাওয়া যাবে !!" আমরাও একেবারে হাতা-খুন্তি, মানে না, হাঁতুড়ি, ছুরি নিয়ে নেমে পড়লাম ফসিল এর খোঁজে। ভাবলাম বড় বড় পাথর থাকবে , মোটা গুড়ির গাছ হবে , উফফফফ!!

কিন্তু একি!?? এত ধানক্ষেত ! একটু মন কেমন করলো , কিন্তু তাতে কি ??? ফসিল তো আমরা খুঁজবই। এদিকে DM sir গাড়ি থেকে নেমেই হাওয়া , পেছনে কিছু জন গেলেও আমরা তখন ধান ক্ষেতে ছন্নছাড়া। সূর্য তখন পশ্চিম দিকে ঢলে পড়েছে একটু একটু করে...ধান এর গায়ে যেন কেউ মিঠে সোনার প্রলেপ লাগিয়েছে...মৃদু মন্দ বাতাস বইছে... সবাই আমরা ঘাস এর ওপর পা ছড়িয়ে বসে পড়েছি। প্রকৃতির রূপ দেখে ফসিল এর কথা মাথাতেই fossilized হয়ে গেছিল. শান্ত মন নিয়ে যখন ঘরে ফেরার (হোটেলে) জন্য উঠতে যাবো তখন হঠাৎ একটু দুর থেকে শুনি আমারই এক সহপাঠী চিৎকার করছে "ফসিল পেয়েছি!!" সবাই উঠে যে যার মতো পেরেছি গিয়ে দৌড়ে খুজছি কোথায়?? কোথায় ফসিল?? সামনে বন্ধুর তাকিয়ে দেখি হাতে একটা সাদা রঙের গুটলি নিয়ে দাড়িয়ে আর DM sir হেব্বি interest নিয়ে লেন্স দিয়ে সেটা দেখছে.

আমরাও ভাবলাম বাবা বিশাল ব্যাপার তো !! আমরাও মহানন্দে হোটেল-এ ফিরলাম , ফিরেই এক খুব কাছের সিনিয়র দাদা কে বললাম , "দাদা জানো আমরা ফসিল পেয়েছি!!"

দাদা বলল , "ফসিল পাওয়া কি হাতের মোয়া নাকি রে ?? , দেখ ওটা কোনো পাখি পাথরে হেগে রেখে ছিল , সেটাই খুঁড়ে তোরা ফসিল ফসিল করছিস।" আমিও ভাবলাম , ঠিকই তো , জিনিস টা তো ফসিল ফসিল নয় আদৌ , দেখে তো কাকের গু লাগছিল। এই নিয়ে অনেক চুল চেরা বিশ্লেষণ , হাসা-হাসি , একটু খিটমিট এর পর , আমরা সকলে এই উপসংহারে এলাম , যে ,ওটা , "LYSTOSAURUS-র গু-র ফসিল"।

আসল ফসিল খোঁজা তো আর হলো না , তবে যে মুহূর্ত গুলো , হাসি ঠাট্টা , আনন্দ আর এত এত গল্প গুলো সাথে নিয়ে এলাম , সেগুলো আজ থেকে অনেক বছর বাদে কোনো এক গোধূলি বেলায় , স্মৃতির ফসিল হয়ে মনের কোন থেকে আপনাআপনি হয়তো বেরিয়ে আসবে বা একটু খুঁড়তে হবে সময়ের হাঁটুরি দিয়ে ।

"ট্রেনের চেইন টানা দণ্ডনীয় অপরাধ"
ছোটো থেকেই হিন্দি সিনেমায় দেখতাম হিরোরা ট্রেনের সামনে এসে দাঁড়িয়ে ট্রেন থামিয়ে দিচ্ছে কিংবা ট্রেনের চেন টেনে কোনরকম বিপদের হাত থেকে কয়েকশো মানুষের প্রাণ বাঁচিয়েছে। না এটার কোনোটাই আমি করিনি তবে জীবনে ট্রেনের চেন টানার অনুভূতিটা মারাত্মক। আমার কাছে একবারে আউট অফ দ্যা বক্স।
ঘটনাটা আমার জীবনের প্রথম ফিল্ডে হবে আশা করা করিনি...
সেদিন আমাদের বাড়ি ফেরার দিন,সবার মন খারাপ;১২ টা দিনের হই হুল্লোড় শেষ। সবাই পোটলা নিয়ে রেডি - সকাল ৬ টা ৪৫ । ট্রেন কোল ফিল্ড এক্সপ্রেস । ডিপার্চার টাইম ৭ টা ৫ । ট্রেন থামতেই সকলে হুরুম করে উঠে পড়ল। সব কিছু ঠিকঠাক। গল্প শুরু,ছবি তোলা শুরু। ট্রেন ছাড়ল,ছাড়ার কয়েক সেকেন্ডের মধ্যেই ভয়ানক এক আর্তনাদ। সহপাঠী একটি মেয়ের ভয়ানক কান্নাকাটি। কারন তার একটি ব্যাগ মিসিং যার মধ্যে টাকা পয়সা,ফোন আরো অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ জিনিস রয়েছে যেটি কার্যত আসানসোলের কোনো ছোটো কোণায় দাঁড়িয়ে আছে.... ব্যাস! আর দেরি নয় হঠাৎ করে কেমন যেনো ওই বলিউডের হিরোটা জেগে উঠল l দিলাম চেন টেনে। কোল ফিল্ড এক্সপ্রেস স্টপড!!!
এবার বুঝলাম অযথা চেন টানলে পুলিশের মার খেতে হতে পারে এমনকি ভারী জরিমানাও হতে পারে । আমিও ভয় পেলাম খানিকটা। দেখলাম মেয়েটা চোখের জল মুছতে মুছতে ট্রেন থেকে নেমে দৌড় দিলো। সাথে দৌড়ে গেলো আমাদের Care Taker । অনেক পুলিশ অফিসার তাকে ধরার চেষ্টা করলেও,ব্যর্থ ! অবশেষে মেয়েটি তার ব্যাগের কাছে পৌঁছালো,মানে সিনেমার ক্লাই ম্যাক্সে যেরকম হিরো হেরোইন কে জড়িয়ে ধরে,ঠিক সেরকম । ততক্ষণে আরপিএফ এসে সবুজ পতাকা দেখানোর নির্দেশ দিয়ে দিয়েছে। ট্রেন ও আর দাঁড়ায় কারুর জন্য ! সোজা দৌড় ...... হাওড়া। মেয়েটিকে রেখেই রওনা দিতে হলো। ঘটনাটা কারুর কাছে খুব বিরক্তির,কারুর কাছে সহানুভূতির,কারুর কাছে কষ্টের আবার কারুর কাছে হাসির। তবে আমার কোনটাই নয়। কারণ আমার - "অ্যাড্রেনালিন রাশ" । তখন আমি নিজেই আমার সিনেমার হিরো । ট্রেনের কিছু লোক বেশ আমাকে দেখে বেশ বিরক্ত হলো,তাতে আমার কি! আমি তো আমার খেয়ালে,যতই হোক চেন টানাও যে ভাগ্যের ব্যাপার। মস্ত ভাগ্যের...স্যার ম্যাডামরা অন্য বগিতে ছিলেন,ফলে খবরটা তাঁদের কাছে পৌঁছতে তারা আমাদের সতর্ক করেন ভবিষ্যতের জন্য। যাইহোক পরে মেয়েটির 550 টাকা ফাইন হয়,পরের লোকালে সে হাওড়া ফেরে.....যতই হোক প্রত্যেক সিনেমার শেষ হ্যাপি এন্ডিং হয়না,কোনো কোনো সময় মনের মধ্যেই ছোটো করে থেকে যা,সময়ের সাথে যা হয় "নস্টালজিক"।

Was It a ‘Prank’?
In our 1st year field trip to Maithon, Maa Tara Lodge had been allotted
for our stay. We had instructions from our professors to not go out of
that lodge after sunset because the place is unsafe.
I was staying in Room No – 13, with my two friends Anwesha and
Nargis. On the 3rd day of our trip, after dinner, we three were gossiping
about our field experiences. In our room, there was a window through
which we could see the corridor. I was sitting on the bed, facing
towards that window. The window was closed. Suddenly while moving
my head, I noticed through the glass of that window, a tall black
shadow, listening to our conversation. I told my roommates, “ Look,
somebody is standing there, maybe any friend is trying to prank with
us”. We three kept laughing taking the names of our friends who could
possibly prank with us and kept saying “Go to your room, else we will
prank with you later”. But, after few minutes, we realized that if it was
our friend pranking with us, then we would have received a response.
But, the shadow was completely still in its position, .Realising that
something was wrong, We started to panic and called our friends
immediately. Our all friends came into our room. We asked if it was a
prank from anyone of them, they said “No”. After they left our room,
We put a curtain on that window.
In the next morning, we got to know, “Nobody was seen, the corridor
was found empty in that time according to the CCTV camera of
corridor”.
Many people say that maybe it was our illusion. But, how come we 3
had the same illusion at the same time?

Shadows in Bonobithi : A Night of ghostly encounters
I was then in my undergraduate course, third semester, at Jogamaya Devi College. The story revolves around my first geological field trip, which was quite electrifying for all of us. We were headed to Ghatshila and Galudih by train with three professors, Prof. Dr. Sujoy Dasgupta, Prof. Dr. Chandrabali Mukhopadhyay, Prof. Asima Kar and our assistant, Rajkumar Da. After we reached to Ghatshila station we went to Galudih by cars and we checked into a hotel. There are two hotels at Galudih and we opt for the second one named as Bonobithi. Though the place is surrounded with ravishing scenic beauty, there is no population near the hotel. Despite its stunning surroundings, some students voiced concerns about staying there, claiming it was haunted due to a rumored su***de on the top floor. However, the professors dismissed these fears as mere illusions. After returning from the field, we had dinner and got back to our rooms. Some students, along with Professor Chandrabali Mam, ventured to the top floor to investigate but found nothing. Despite their reassurances, we were unable to close our eyelids. In the middle of the night, one of my friend heard eerie sounds from her balcony, causing a commotion among us. Eventually, we managed to calm her down and return to our rooms. The next morning, Professor Chandrabali Mam recounted hearing knocking sounds at her window at 4 o’clock, only to find the garden swing moving mysteriously. These experiences left us frightened and fueled the stories of the haunting at Bonobithi from our first night there.

WHEN FRIENDS BECOME FAMILY

It was our last field excursion of graduation to Maithon.We all were super excited about it.Literally we made all the plans.
After four days of fieldwork,I fell sick.I was in high fever at that time and I became unconscious.As my condition started worsening gradually,I was admitted to the local DVC hospital in Maithon.When I regained consciousness,I remember
a nurse asking me.." চিনতে পারছো ওদের?"..I saw two girls sitting by my side .I replied a word in a daze .."বন্ধু"..
I still remember ,the whole night my two friends Ankita & Sneha were with me in the hospital until my parents came and they did literally everything for me in the hospital.In the morning when my parents came, They(Ankita &Sneha) had to leave the hospital as they had fieldwork .At that time ,when they were going,I got emotional and started crying as I had no words to thank them.Though it was my last excursion in graduation ,I was unable to complete it .But apart from measuring the dip &strike of a bed, identifying the rock type , structures, what I learnt is a huge chapter of friendship.My all batchmates were with me at that time and I think that is the true 'group spirit 'of a fieldwork.

মাইথনে মাতোয়ারা - অর্ণব কাঞ্জী

এটা ছিল একটা Geological field trip-এর থেকেও প্রথমবার বন্ধুদের সাথে কাটানো একটা স্মরণীয় অভিজ্ঞতা। এই দীর্ঘ ১২ দিনে আমরা প্রায় প্রত্যেকেই একটা পরিবারের মতো হয়ে গেছি। তাড়াতাড়ি ঘুম থেকে উঠেই অন্যদের ঘরের দরজায় কড়া নেড়ে আসা প্রত্যেকের নিত্যজীবনশৈলীর একটা অংশ হয়ে গেছিল। এই চরমভাবাপন্নযুক্ত এলাকাগুলোতে চড়া রোদে যে আমাদের কাজকর্ম চলত তা অবশ্যই সবার মতো আমার কাছেও ক্লান্তিদায়ক হলেও অনেকটাই রোমাঞ্চকর লেগেছিলো। শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকাদের অক্লান্ত তত্ত্বাবধানে আমরা প্রত্যেকটা বিষয় আমরা পুংক্ষানুপুংক্ষভাবে অনুশীলন করে নেওয়ার চেষ্টা করেছিলাম। মধ্যানহভোজন ও নৈশভোজন-এ মাছ/ মাংস/ ডিমের নানান লোভোনীয়ো পদ সারা দিনের ক্লান্তিকে প্রায় দূর করে দিতো। প্রতি সন্ধেবেলা আমাদের একসাথে দিনলিপি লিখে শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকাদের কাছে জমা দেওয়ার পর কখোনো মাঠে বসে একসাথে আবার কখোনো বিভিন্ন ঘরে শুরু হতো গল্পের আসর, সিনেমা দেখা, UNO খেলা, নাচ-গান-শাইরি আরো কত কিছুই। এছাড়া লুকিয়ে ভান্ডার পাহাড় উঠে তার সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করা ও field work এর সময় শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকাদের সামনে ভুলে করে গালাগালি বেরিয়ে যাওয়ার মত আরো নানান Mountain Dew moment তৈরি হয়েছিলো। এখানে এসেই অনেকেই তাদের পয়লা বৈশাখের সঙ্গীকে পেয়ে গেলো যদিও আমি সেই আগাগোড়াই ১লা বৈশাখের ক্লান্ত পথচারি হয়েই রয়ে গেলাম। শেষদিনের অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে DJ স্পিকার ও বনফায়ারের আয়োজন আমাদের উৎফুল্লতাকে আরো চরমে নিয়ে গেছিলো। বলতে গেলে সেই ১২ দিনের প্রত্যেকটা মুহূর্তই এক একটা special moment হিসেবে রয়ে গেছে। পরেরদিন ভোরেরবেলায় আমাদের ঘরে ফেরার গান বেজে উঠলো আর মাইথনকে ছেড়ে আসার সময় আমরা যেনো সকলে মনে মনে সমবেতো কণ্ঠে গেয়ে উঠলাম-

"আভি না যাও ছোড় কার, য়ে দিল আভি ভারা নেহি"

কোথায় বা কি, ভূতের ফাঁকি---মিলিয়ে গেল চট্ ক'রে!”

ফিল্ড একটা অদ্ভুত রহস্যময় ব্যাপার! এই যেমন কোলকাতায় থাকলে কলেজের এভারেস্ট-সমান উঁচু সিঁড়ি বেয়ে চারতলায় উঠতে উঠতেই ঘাম ছুটে যায়, মনে হয় ক্লাস না করে খানিকটা গড়িয়ে নিতে পারলেই বেশি ভালো হয়; কিন্তু ফিল্ডে সারা সকাল হাড়ভাঙা খাটুনির পর রাতে একটু আড্ডা না দিয়ে ঘুমের কোনো প্রশ্নই নেই! এ কি রহস্য নয়?

অথচ এই আড্ডা দিতে গিয়েই একবার বিপত্তি হলো।

আমাদের সেকেন্ড ইয়ারের ফিল্ডের জন্য মহারাষ্ট্রের রামটেকে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়েছিলো। মা-বাবা ছাড়া প্রথমবার বাড়ি থেকে অতদূর, একেবারে অন্য রাজ্যে গিয়ে, আমরা যাকে বলে ডানা ছাড়াই উড়ছি! প্রথম দু'দিন ঠিকঠাক কাটলো, তিনদিনের দিন সন্ধ্যেবেলা কথায় কথায় জানতে পারলাম, যে ধর্মশালায় আমরা রয়েছি, সেখানে নাকি ভূত আছে। সচক্ষে কেউ দেখেননি বটে, তবে ভুতুড়ে অভিজ্ঞতা নাকি অনেকেরই হয়েছে। প্রথমটায় তো হেসেই উড়িয়ে দিলাম, হুঁ হুঁ বাবা, আমরা ভীতু নাকি? ওসব মানি না। আসল ভয়টা শুরু হলো রাতের বেলা খাওয়া দাওয়া শেষ হওয়ার পর, যখন আস্তে আস্তে একটা একটা করে আলো নেভা শুরু হলো। স্যারেদের কড়া নির্দেশ, তাড়াতাড়ি শুয়ে পড়তে হবে। কিন্তু আড্ডা বড়োই বালাই! জয়তী, শ্রেয়া, সৃঞ্জিতা, রেশমা ওরা নিশ্চয়ই আমাদের ওয়েট করছে গল্পের আসর সাজিয়ে। অতএব সব ভয় একদিকে রেখে আমরা ওদের রুমে গেলাম। মনের সুখে সবাই মিলে হাসছি, জয়তী কিছু একটা বলেছে, হাসিটা একটু বেশিই জোরে হয়ে গে'ছে বোধহয়, এমন সময় দরজায় ঠকঠক! প্রথমে ভাবলাম নিশি ডাকছে, তারপর মনে হলো বাঙালি ভূত বোধহয় মহারাষ্ট্র অবধি আসবে না এই শীতে, তাহলে কি আরো ভয়ঙ্কর কিছু?

আসলে স্যার এসেছিলেন, আমাদের হাসির আওয়াজ শুনে! সবাইকে বকা খেতে হলো, তারপর রাত তিনটে অবধি ওয়েট করতে হলো নিজেদের রুমে ফিরে যাওয়ার জন্য, কারণ স্যার বারান্দা দিয়ে পায়চারি করছিলেন।

তিনটে দশ নাগাদ আমরা যখন পা টিপে টিপে অন্ধকার বারান্দা দিয়ে নিজেদের রুমে পৌঁছোলাম, ধর্মশালার ভূত কেন যে আমাদের ঘাড় মটকায়নি, সে-ও এক রহস্য!

*মানিব্যাগ রহস্য*
জিওলজিকাল ফিল্ডগুলির স্মৃতিরা যেন কখনোই পুরোনো হয়না। এমনই একদিন নিজের অজান্তেই কখন যেন স্মৃতির সাগরে ডুব মেরেছিলাম । হাতড়ে যা পেলাম, তাতে আপনা থেকেই হেসে উঠলাম। ঘটনাটি ছিল এরকম-
শীতকালের দিন, সেবার ফিল্ড ছিল ঘাটশিলায়। সেদিন বোধহয় অন্যান্য দিনের থেকে একটু বেশি সময় ফিল্ডে থাকতে হয়েছিল।যাইহোক সারাদিন কাজ করার পর এক ব্যাগ ক্লান্তি নিয়ে গাড়ির সিটে নিজেদের এলিয়ে দিয়ে সন্ধ্যের আগে আগে ফেরা হল আমাদের হোটেল কে .ডি প্যালেসে । আগেই বলেছি শীতকাল তাই চারিদিকটায় হালকা অন্ধকার নেমে এসেছে। সবাই একে একে নিজেদের ব্যাগপত্র ,সরঞ্জাম নিয়ে গাড়ির বুক হালকা করে যখন নিজ নিজ ঘরের দিকে রওনা দেবে তখনই হঠাৎ মিশ্র উত্তেজনায় ডাক পড়লো "স্যার,আমার পার্সটা খুঁজে পাচ্ছি না।" যে যেখানে ছিল সেখান থেকে তড়িঘড়ি এগিয়ে এলো নির্দিষ্ট গাড়ির দিকে পার্স সন্ধানের উদ্দেশ্যে। ইতিমধ্যেই পার্স খুঁজতে উৎসাহিত কিছুজন তাদের মধ্যে গোয়েন্দা সত্বার উদ্ভাবন ঘটিয়ে মিনিট দশেক খানাতল্লাশি চালালো। স্যার এলেন ,পার্স - মালিকের সাথে কথা বলে জানতে পারলেন, মহাশয়া টাকা পয়সার সাথে তার আধার কার্ডটিও পার্সেই রাখতেন, সুতরাং পার্স নিখোঁজ মানে আপাতত তার পরিচয়পত্রটিও নিখোঁজ। আবহাওয়ায় উদ্বিগ্নতার গন্ধ। কেউ কেউ আবার ঘটনায় তিতিবিরক্ত হতেও ভুল গেছে ,উত্তেজনা এমন পর্যায়ে। অবশেষে পার্স মালিকসহ উদ্বিগ্ন চিন্তিত জনা ১৮ মেয়ে ও আরও কজন যারা ছিলেন ,সবাইকে থামিয়ে স্যার বললেন, "একটা ডায়েরী করতে হবে পুলিশে "এবং সকালে আবারো একবার খোঁজ লাগানো হবে নিখোঁজ পার্সটির।
ঘটনার ইতি টানা হবে এমন সময় কোন একজন বীরের মত বলে উঠলো, "এই তো স্যার পার্স ,টুপির নিচে ঢাকা পড়েছিল " , বলার কায়দা এমন যেন ঝিনুকের মধ্যে মুক্ত উদ্ধার করেছে। আবারো স্যার যখন এলেন ,সবাই তখন স্বস্তির নিঃশ্বাস ফেলছে আর পার্স মালিক তখন স্যারের মুখের দিকে ফ্যালফ্যাল করে চেয়ে হাসছে ,স্যারও হাসছেন ,আর সমস্ত উত্তেজনা দলা পাকিয়ে বলে উঠলেন তার সেই ঐতিহাসিক শব্দখানা " হতচ্ছাড়া !!"
এমন জনা কতক হতচ্ছাড়ারা থাকে বলেই হয়তো ফিল্ড শেষে মনে হয় " ইশ,!! দিনগুলো যদি আবার ফিরে পেতাম ......"

FIRST FIND!
Firsts are always special. Like every other naive first year student, even the most common geological features excite me and therefore, this experience might be a dime-a-dozen for you, but for me, it will always hold a special place in my memory. On our fifth day of field work, the team headed towards Gorakhpur Mines (Maithon). We trudged towards our location, overlooking the piles of rocks lying on both sides of the path and unaware of the mysteries they contained. After we reached the spot, the team was divided into groups for time-by-time scrutiny. I waited for my turn. Exhausted under the burning sun, I seated myself on a random rock to rest exactly when I noticed something intriguing. A narrow crack with sharp teeth like features was observed along the entire rock. I tried to peek through the crack to see what was inside. I called a friend to crack it open and it required quite a few blows of the hammer to part the rock. It was tedious but worth the wonder it revealed. We were awestruck by the beauty of what we found inside. Perfect, euhedral quartz crystals filled the entire rock like a geoid. I had never seen something like that before and neither did any of my classmates. Though it was extremely common to our professors, still they tried their best to pretend excitement as we rushed to show them this discovery. I felt ecstatic and this one "discovery" increased my enthusiasm toward the subject manifold. Still today I take pride in recalling this incident and will always remain as the "best moment" in my field dairies.
