In 1973, Alokesh Jana, a businessman resident of Howrah, established a bakery named New Howrah Bakery. The first unit was opened in Pallab Pond area near Ramrajatala, Howrah. Later, units of New Howrah Bakery were established in different parts of Bengal. At first, students were kept in the most attention during the making of this cake. Bapuji cake is made keeping in mind the quick tiffin. However, Bapuji cake quickly gained popularity among working people. Currently, more than 50,000 cakes are sold every day. There is no alternative to Bapuji cake as a cheap tiffin. Even today, in the age of shiny packaging, paper packing is the USP of this cake.

Book reading session of Calcutta On Your Plate clubbed with a Awadhi Food Pop Up( curated specially keeping in view the book content) to be held at Manzilat’s on Tuesday, 18th July between 4.30pm to 6.30pm.
Nilosree Biswas is an author and filmmaker trained in comparative literature and later in cinema. She writes about history (often colonial Bengal and pre-modern India), culture, art history, food and cinema of South Asia. These areas of interests extend to her frequent national and international columns.
Her earlier books include Banaras: Of Gods, Humans and Stories and Alluring Kashmir: The Inner Spirit (co-written with Irfan Nabi).
Two decades of film work has earned Nilosree awards like the ‘Best Documentary’ in the New York Festival, with documentaries showcased at the Cannes Film Festival and archived by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar), Los Angeles.
She is currently working on her next book with themes related to colonial Bengal.
In this program she will speak about the content of her book and what inspired her to write this book on the rich and historic gastronomic culture of the city, participating members are open to discuss the same with the author of international acclaim

According to mythology, a woman used to eat all the food in her house and blame it on a cat. Goddess Sasthi, who rides the cat, got extremely angry at her. Hence, when the housewife gave birth to her kids, one of them got lost. The woman started performing rites to make Goddess Sasthi happy. Later, the goddess granted her kid back to her. However, the women's in-laws became very angry after finding out about the incident and stopped her from going to her parent's house. The parents, eager to see their daughter on the day of Sasthi Puja, invited their son-in-law and daughter to their house. Hence, that day came to be known as Jamai Sasthi. It is celebrated as a day of reunion and happiness.

পৌরাণিক কাহিনী অনুসারে, একজন মহিলা তার বাড়ির সমস্ত খাবার খেয়ে ফেলতেন এবং বিড়ালের উপর দোষ চাপাতেন। দেবী ষষ্ঠী, যিনি বিড়াল চড়েন, তার উপর অত্যন্ত ক্রুদ্ধ হলেন। তাই, গৃহবধূ যখন তার সন্তানদের জন্ম দেয়, তাদের মধ্যে একটি হারিয়ে যায়। ষষ্ঠী দেবীকে খুশি করার জন্য মহিলাটি আচার অনুষ্ঠান শুরু করেন। পরে, দেবী তার সন্তানকে তার কাছে ফিরিয়ে দেন। তবে ঘটনাটি জানতে পেরে শ্বশুরবাড়ির লোকজন ক্ষুব্ধ হয়ে তাকে তার বাবার বাড়িতে যেতে বাধা দেয়। ষষ্ঠী পূজার দিন মেয়েকে দেখতে আগ্রহী বাবা-মা তাদের জামাই ও মেয়েকে তাদের বাড়িতে আমন্ত্রণ জানান। তাই সেই দিনটি জামাই ষষ্ঠী নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে। এটি পুনর্মিলন এবং আনন্দের দিন হিসাবে পালিত হয়।

Unishe April (Bengali pronunciation: [u̯niʃe epril], transl. April 19) is a 1994 Indian Bengali-language drama film directed by Rituparno Ghosh and produced by Renu Roy under the banner of Spandan Films. It stars Aparna Sen and Debashree Roy while Prosenjit Chatterjee and Deepankar De appear in supporting roles. The music of the film was composed by Jyotishka Dasgupta.

Unishe April marked Ghosh's second directorial venture after Hirer Angti (1992). A loose remake of Ingmar Bergman’s film Autumn Sonata (1978), it opened to widespread acclaim, with critical praise drawn towards the screenplay and performances by the lead actors—especially that of Sen and Ray, the latter eventually winning the National film Award for Best Actress. Ghosh, besides directing the film, also wrote the screenplay while the cinematography was handled by Sunirmal Mazumdar.

The film's narrative revolves around the tensed relationship between a woman who is an uninvolved parent and her daughter, depicting how their inter-personal matters lead to a bitter aspect of life. Considered way ahead of its time, the huge success of the film was instrumental in ending the era of action films in Bengali film industry and rejuvenating the genre of art films. Ray's award-winning performance further consolidated her position as the 'undisputed queen of Bengali cinema'. At the 42nd National Film Awards, it won Best Feature Film and was nominated for the New Currents Award at the Busan International Film Festival of 1996.
