Plastic pollution is a huge environment and health issues as it harms us in more than one way such as it clogs drains, causes visual pollution and proves fatal for stray animals. On the occassion of Gandhi Jayanti, the students and teachers of SMIT in collaboration with the Dadati and NSS club with “Swachhata Hi Sewa” campaign collected plastic wastes in the SMIT campus and encouraged the students regarding awareness and action for the protection of our environment from plastic pollution.

The Plastic Free Cleanliness Drive began on 2nd October 2019 with the “Awareness Campaign and Door to door Hostel Collection of Plastic Waste” at diverse areas of the campus. The students were divided into groups and went to different sections of SMIT in order to collect the plastic wastes, the target locations being teachers' quarter, Marena, Boys and girls hostel and canteen. Teachers and students participated in great numbers and made this campaign a big success.

The social welfare clubs along with the students of SMIT has always tried to bring about the best in everyone and everything, be it cleanliness or education and we as a proud SMITian will keep working for the larger goal of humanity.

As a mother protects her baby by nurturing, feeding and fulfilling every requirement of her child, in the same manner our mother nature protects us, feeds us and gives us a proper place to live but in return what are we giving to our environment? It is our responsibility to respect, protect and give honour to our mothers as well as our mother nature.
On 5th June that is on the occasion of World Environment Day, the National Service Scheme, SMIT team showed great gesture to protect our environment by organising a tree plantation drive where the faculty members participated in great numbers. The program was held by the support and blessings of Dr. Ashis Sharma, Director SMIT. The drive began at 8:30 am by Dr. B.B. Pradhan, Associate Director academics followed by Dr. Ratika Pradhan, Associate Director SA planting guava saplings around the campus of SMIT. Chief Warden, HODs, HOOs and faculty members of all the departments joined hands to make this event a great success. 35 guava saplings were planted in order to keep the future perspective in mind of making Guava Garden.

It's not just about a symbolic one tree planting; as the youths of nation, it’s time that we realize the importance of our mother nature and for that we all have to take a vow to plant trees in great extent क्योंकि पर्यावरण बचे, तो प्राण बचे ।।

An old age home is a place where despite the lack of the care of loved ones, the aged people get together and form a family of their own. All necessities are looked after, and outsiders find solace in one another. The sceneries of closeness and liveliness with a tinge of innocent charm are what makes old age homes a living example of the fact that no matter how much a person ages; the spirit and enthusiasm of their youth are still intact deep inside the heart.
On the bright morning of 20th January, a group of 10 students of the Dadati club of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology along with the teacher coordinator Mrs. Jhuma Sunuwar paid a visit to the Lee Aal Old Age Home. The aforementioned old age home is based in Tintek and is headed by Mrs. Passankit Lepcha. No stones were left unturned in contributing to the old age home as various essential articles - clothes, blankets and food items, to mention a few, were collected beforehand by the members of the Dadati club and were distributed to a total of 15 elderly people. Moreover, the students arranged breakfast for them as they served Dosa accompanied by Sambar.
The generous gestures and efforts of the students were well received by the members of the Lee Aal Old Age Home and they motivated the students to keep on working for the larger goal of humanity.

Fashion Show - The Lambent Night

7th November 2018, the Diwali evening of SMIT created an entrancing aura all around. The evening was filled with lights and charm. The theme of the fashion show was 'Ethnic Wear'. Clad in the exemplary colourful attires, the participants walked with full confidence and each walk was in perfect synchronization with the music. The costumes were perfectly mingled with the vivid atmosphere and the entire show consisted of boys' and girls' solo walk and couple walk followed by the coordinators' walk. The crowd admired the show and applauded immensely. Needless to say, the fashion show easily grabbed the privilege of being the evening's show stopper.

The Lambent Night began on the splendent evening of Diwali with the faculty members lighting the holy lamp. The fest started with a powerful speech by Udbhav recounting the diwali celebration away from home followed by Vaibhav, mesmerising the audience through his melodious voice on 'Dil Diyan Gallan' and 'Pani Da Rang'. The intensity only amplified when Udbhav and his troop made the audience tap their feet to the rhythm of the song 'Iktara'. Amidst all the happiness and celebration, the Halla Bol team by their witty and inspirational skit, shed light on various social issues which need to be addressed by all of us regarding the racism in our society. Gagan, with his fantastic beat boxing skills amazed us all. This was then followed by the blissful performance of Akriti Sharma on the vocals and Samrat Halder on the guitar performing various classics like 'Chura Liya' and 'Tu Hai Wahi'. After this, a band performance by 1st years with Anantika and Lush on the vocals and Muddassir and Srijan on the guitar and keyboard had the audience grooving to songs like 'Summer Of 69' and 'Yellow'. This was followed by an absolutely energetic solo drum performance by Juga Jyoti, the crowd seemed to share the same energy with him. The last but certainly not the least was the dance performance by the 2nd year girls who tip toed to a couple of melodious songs and were able to make the audience move with them to these numbers. The event organised by Vishal Jaiswal and Shreyeskar Singh showed the diversity and vibrancy of the performances with amazing choreography left the audience elated.

Chromatix Unplugged, an event that was organised by the music club of SMIT; Chromatix. It all started 2 weeks before the event where people brought up an idea of breaking the rules of stage shows and making Acoustic Music a prominent concept in the minds of the performers and the viewers.
The concept was brought to life by Amiyangshu Nath and Pratik Bishwakarma who put their heart and soul into this one event. The idea started to grow and people were involved and eventually the it was scaled up from a street show to a miniature gig
in the Amphitheatre.
The people involved in the Unplugged session dealt with a lot, from sore fingers and throats to paining arms and legs, but when they saw how things turned out to be it was all worth it.
There were a lot of people who went unnoticed for the work behind the scenes, on the decoration and lights and sound systems.
It sure was a wonderful piece of teamwork and coordination among the members of the group.

Her or his; she or him, does it really make a difference? The society we live in today has created undefined boundaries which aren't supposed to be crossed by the other gender and the area on a girl's side is very less with her struggling everyday for an equal share in responsibilities, rights and freedom. Keeping the same agenda in mind, the members of DADATI Club, SMIT along with the coordination of Mrs. Jhuma Sunuwar organized an event on women empowerment in the Panchayat Office, Majhitar in the evening on 4th of October. The event started with the felicitation of the women who attended the same. The program was continued with a dance performance by The Illusion Club of SMIT and a skit by Halla bol Club. To keep the enthusiasm high, a beat boxing perfomance was presented by Akash Thapa. And last but not the least, Chandni gave a heart warming speech and presented various measures which could be taken in order to empower women. "Various mass campaigns need to be organized in the backward rural areas to make them aware about the real values of women and all the facilities available by the government for their bright future. They need to be promoted for the survival and proper education of female child to really bring the dream of women empowerment come true" she concluded.
In order to spread the awareness regarding various issues, the students of SMIT are always ready to stand for a good cause to bring about a change in the society.

We were out for no reason. 9 to 5 had already commenced being a strain for the back and did I say we were still in college?

Aimlessly treading the streets was no longer a matter of choice but a compulsion. Keeping up with that, well lets say, is a bit more towards the monotone than you can presume it to be. But we did always manage searching out an off beat.

Hidden beneath the remnants of a majestic forest was the huge 7 storeyed giant, a true manifestation of human might, a hotel under construction (kind of an anti climax). Leaving the hilly turns of NH 10 we found our way through the would-be parking till the enormous black silhouette rose to view.

Being blocked only by a mason with a self imposed sentry duty, and “dekhne aye hai bhaiya khali (we are here only to catch a look)” being our passes to the forbidden paradise, we took a step onto the cement dias from the grassy terrain. Like a half-empty- or-half-filled glass the hotel had gained the perspective of both being a new born and the one in the dilemma of the choice of lingering on to his count of days. For a moment you could imagine yourself being amongst ruins of witnesses of the lost days and for the very next it would seem like the dawn of a genre unfamiliar with these woods. Bordered against the western sky stood the object of our explore right above us.

It was only a matter of seconds and the two of us were scanning through the array of pillars and the rough marble-demanding cement floor declaring a corner to be the lounge and the other to be the reception in making. The building under construction seemed like an incomplete story or like one with an open ending which gave you immense to ponder upon. It was not like the movie where you appreciate the fate of the protagonist but like the one where you seem more concerned about framing your own conclusion of the story. It was the left work of a lost author crying out to be fulfilled.

Treading our ways through the whirling railingless staircase, we soon landed upon what look like the restaurant. It felt magical when with a bat of an eyelid you could see the cement walls transcend into carved delicacy, the plastic hanging newly foundationed ceiling covering up with a bright dangling chandeliar, the empty halls being lined up with white clothed tables and mahogany chairs, the awkward silence vent to a caccophony of variegated voices.

Six spaces for doors lined the corridors along the hallway in the next floor. You did not need the blessing of a bachelor’s degree to realise them to be the suites. We had the freedom to presume it to be the yellowed pages of history or the blank ones waiting for a new story. We went for the latter of course. Thinking of the first couple to make their way into the suite as a manifestation of their newly established story and the walls unknowingly rise in worth in their memories did hit hard on our testos!

I can well recall my companion trying to give things a dramatic twitch suggesting the existence of props from a play of Dante adored for his perspective of the “other paradise” which might have reigned the place before its unwanted exploitation and I being quite against the masculine bravery had rendered him back to the optimistic reality. It was hardly dusk when we were both at the rooftop. The sun setting beyond the horizon of huge dry leaves was both a signal to return and a high five for a beautiful evening of exploration. Perhaps that is the aura about openness, it opens up your perspectives, you can feel what you want, you cannot blame the author’s sight to be against your foresee.

It is meaningless to add the promise we made to be back to watch our imaginations being metamorphorised to imagery.

“7.25” said google on being asked the time and i do not remember our warden being quite enthusiastic about unauthorized late night ventures and soon our footsteps were following themselves back.

Great day-)

As I Trembled over the empty can from the last night party, everything felt messed up around me. The grey sky and grayer shadows following me everywhere I go. I rushed back towards the same old stares leading below, the beggar always sitting left was right today, juggling the pennies in a bowl shaped half circle.
The winter wind touched my lips as I rushed for the train which already left me alone at the underground station of New York.
I dropped my shoulders; I was late for home again.
I pulled my notepad. It surpassed the hollow in my heart or the tunnel through which my knight in shining armour would arrive taking me home. As I marked another day when I was late and turned to the next page.
The page showing off its improper lines and fine edges and I turned again. I started with the same hollow thought, though I would travel in a bit; my hand throwing tantrums all over the plain boring page.

I lifted up my resting eyes as the wind was playing mischief running around. It always arrives before my train does. As the flickering tube light above my head grew old enough to shine bright, I closed my diary with my passion inside. The metro screeched and made its halt opening the way in right before me. I stepped inside into the empty shell we call technology. There was strange chill inside. I could feel someone looking at me from the corner of his eyes.
I grabbed a seat, there were few fellows sitting at random spots. Making it like some constellation we never got to know about or just some kids running around, making random turns. I looked around to observe something but everything was same like every day .

The old man with old newspaper in his hand and the short lady trying to sit straight while a young skinny lady in red brushing her hairs. I always see her brushing her hair in the same pattern for as long as I can remember. But that's not odd, who am I to judge?
I looked down to realise that my playlist just ran out of songs and I am almost half way through. Home is not that far away now. I ran through my purple bag for something to read and found a book to rely on. Flipping through the pages I was still wondering about the short lady.
I wonder where she was headed.
I wonder how old she must be.
I wonder why she's always asleep.
Wondering my way through the rest of my journey, I was already unlocking the doors of my house. The light above my door acting shy as I brushed the snow from my shoulders. I looked up and realised that today was a beautiful day and my light ruined the night sky.
The home was quite today, it always is but more than normal today. I miss the cat I never adopted when I was a child because my mother was worried about the cat's p**p getting cleaned up. I convinced myself for some coffee and blueberry cake before bed. Every slice felt heaven, there's nothing better than blueberry! The love for blueberry never dies.
Getting into bed I picked up the book I never started in the metro. When I heard someone banging at my door, harder it gets with time I observed. I looked at the clock next to me flashing that it was already midnight. I walked towards the banging door, a bit alarmed. I open the door to find the skinny girl in red blowing cigarette at my face.
Taken aback.
I said "yes"?
No interest was shown by her as she was busy puffing the smoke inside.
I tried again
‎"What is it"?
‎She responded this time.
"The water is overflowing honey" and she walked away.

Making a face full of surprises, I found myself facing reality, a sales girl in India holding a glass of water in my hand, overflowing and smiling at my day dreams.
Still smiling I made my way back towards my cubical passing the old short lady banging the phone after a bad client experience. Must be the old man with his old newspaper. I smiled a bit more and wiped my hand with the tissue at the corner of my desk. Flipping the crumbled tissue I realised that dreams do come true as there was the metro station and the hollow hole doodled, through which my knight never came through.

The Last Talk
Behind the unreasonable admiration, this city had always seemed mysterious to me. Perhaps the best feel of a city dweller is that you can cross hundreds of men with agony crying out of yourself and yet no one bats an eyelid. And I have always found that beautiful.
‘The city with a soul’, they love calling it. Yes you may call it a vague attempt to match up with ‘the city of romance’ or ‘the city of love’, but maybe once we all have felt it. The touch of that wandering soul which fills up every dark lanes, which cries out of the whirling river waters and which camouflages itself with the winter wind across the dead cement forest.
It was just a week back and Calcutta had lived once again with my friend’s tale. Unknowingly, his mirth had become addictive to that soul. And today, as I stood with mother, shaded under the same dark umbrella, the rain drizzling around us and the old man confronting us, I too got my touch of it.
It was perhaps our last conversation. When, “I believe the count starts from today. Anyday. Anytime,” escaped his lips, everything seemed to change suddenly. It was as if the words of this old spreading cancer patient hung loose in the air. But the busy city? That city which had a soul? It remained stuck in answering its own call of duty. It could not wait. It could not turn. It had no reason to. Who was this old man? Just a weird unused punctuation in the long syntax of this era. A mere uncaring testimony of days we willingly forget.
I felt bad – bad for him, bad for us, bad for the soul I had adored, bad for everyone. Then a strange flash lightened up. It was not the end of everything. At this hour as I was standing in this dark lane witnessing the last conversation with an old man who was just an old man to me minutes back, maybe in dozens of corners of this city life budded out. Children returned home. Loves reunited. People met. People rejoiced, they cried, they laughed and that..that very aspect was the soul. It was not the soul which felt for you, it was the one you felt for yourself. The city with a soul was a city full of people with souls.
And as we parted in the rains, the old man back to his dark closet and the both of us heading towards home, we were glad. Not glad for the man to have had the luck of Nirvana, but glad for our realization. Glad for the feel. Glad for the final touch of the soul. The city with ‘the’ soul.
To Calcutta and beyond

The National Service Scheme team of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology has always believed in the Government of India's larger visionary to establish India as a clean and green country. To foster a healthy learning and growing environment within a society, a clean surrounding with proper educational guidance is of utmost necessity.
On the occasion of NSS day, the volunteers of SMIT arranged cleanliness and educational drives to celebrate this day with sheer joy and happiness.
On the early morning of 24th of September, a team of 20 from the NSS group of SMIT, took to the streets of the surrounding Majhitar area to bring out a rally spreading the awareness of having a clean and green society. Saying rhythmic slogans and carrying around beautiful placards and banners exclaiming the virtues of cleanliness, the group took a round of the entire area, attracting the attention of the residents and the passers-by as well. After the march, they cleaned around the streets befronting the college, thus implementing words to actions. Students picked up the non-biodegradable, especially the plastic wastes threwn around along the roadsides and talked to the local shop owners for providing a dustbin at their doorstep to prevent the spreading of garbage.
The NSS team has always tried to bring about the best in everyone and everything, be it cleanliness or education. In the second half of the day, team of 16 nss volunteers visited the government majhitar school and addressed the students of standard 9th and 10th for a career counselling session. It was an interactive session where the students were made aware about the various streams and opportunities that lie in front of them. They were informed about the various competitive exams and posts they can prerpare for based on their interests.
With cleanliness and proper career guidance comes a beautiful working ambience, which in general motivates citizens to further work for the betterment of the society and the country at large and keeping this aim in mind, our Team NSS will keep working for the larger goal of humanity.
