“What IF?” is a powerful starting point.
What if Mumbai were a greener city, with several parks and well-maintained public spaces? What if Mumbai were a more pedestrian-friendly city? What if we recycled urban land and infrastructure using minimal natural resources?
Join us for an illustrated talk and presentation by Robert Stephens, Principal Architect RMA Architects and author of Bombay Imagined, as he presents radically sustainable plans from Bombay's unbuilt past, highlighting projects that would have shaped a more climate-resilient Mumbai, if realized.
We look forward to seeing you on Friday, 15 July at IFBE, 6-7.30pm. Register at the link in bio.

What shapes your neighbourhood?
.
Housing within a city constitutes the majority of its built form and in a sense the quality of
housing defines the image and qualitative experience of a city. Despite this obvious
connection state housing policies and the consequent regulatory frameworks often prescribe
an architecture for housing unmindful of the living environments they create.
.
This exhibition documents the different regimes and frameworks of building regulations shaping housing in the city of Mumbai. What has been the historical development of these regulations in Mumbai? How have these regulations shaped the urban form of the city?

What shapes your building interface?
.
The city has been a constant being shaped by buildings born from differently regulated buildings codes. These regulations affect the interface of the builiding with the city fabric and the behavioural qualities of the users to the building. While some buildings directly open to the street, some have tiers of security and transition spaces of permeability.

What shapes your house?
.
We often do not realize to what extent our lives are regulated in cities. There are layers of laws that regulate almost every aspect of our lives in the city -it is a vast all-encompassing list, from essentials of food, water, and air as well as where and how we go to work, what can / cannot be done for leisure etc. These and several other aspects of a typical building in a city are regulated to extreme specifications and details.
