Today, let's take a journey back to the origins of the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a cherished tradition often seen in North Indian weddings. As the groom eagerly approaches the door, he's greeted by the lively bridesmaids who stand guard, ready to initiate the age-old ritual of the ribbon cutting ceremony.
But before he can step into his happily ever after, there is a delightful exchange of banter and shagun negotiations with the spirited squad of bridesmaids! It's all in good fun as we blend tradition with laughter, making memories that will last a lifetime.
Adding a contemporary flair, today's ribbon cutting ceremony introduces ribbons adorned with playful texts like "No entry without tax"!
The ribbon text on the third image reads (in Punjabi), “Naaka Saaliya Da!” (Checkpoint of Sisters-in-law). The ideas was not to give entry without clearing the dues.
But beyond the laughter, this tradition holds deep historical significance. In the era of arranged marriages, where glimpses of the groom were scarce until the wedding day, this ceremony transcended mere shagun exchange. It served as a moment for bridesmaids and relatives to steal glances at the groom, sharing impressions and descriptions with the eagerly awaiting bride.
As we uphold this time-honoured custom, let's reflect on its roots – a celebration of connection and shared moments brimming with anticipation and joy.
