Sharing this fractional guun video too, as a post, so that you can decide whether it is worth trying out such intricate layakaari!!

For many, the layakaari might seem ‘simple’ and easy to master. However, like Guruji says: Simple is Not Easy!

By layakaari in this video, I mean ‘everything in between’ the whole number guuns. Like 2.25, 2.5, 2.75…etc!

Also, a perennial question: Do Kathak dancers really need this level of mathematics? Aren’t we dancers first? And shouldn’t it suffice to ‘be able to move body gracefully’?

Well, there is beauty in mathematics. And it is fundamental to becoming an accomplished performer. Whether you realise it or not, you have been indulging into mathematics from your very first ‘dha’!

Sharing this as a post so that one can listen to it at will and try to decipher the guun in piece (I mean peace, lol).

One of the things to note here is the difference between what is termed ‘layakari’ and what is called ‘kram-laya’.

Do share your thoughts on this before I tell you what my Guruji taught me about these two terms. Also, it would be great if you could send your own attempt. Tag if you do!

Finally, remember the important thing is to enjoy the innate musicality in mathematics! Impossible to imagine Kathak without maths…!

Performed at the prestigious with .kathak

Recovering slowly and steadily from covid. The journey is arduous and taxing on health. A few totally unexpected side effects.

But Guruji’s dhrupad composition is so ‘energy-giving’; it is so laden with positivity that you forget your afflictions and merge yourself with that perennial source of energy.
