Usually, the groom and his baarat are welcomed by flowers, sweets, and aarti at the wedding. But Sarsaul is a small town in Kanpur district which gives hospitality at weddings a different definition altogether! Here, tomatoes and potatoes are hurled at the groom and his family followed by a string of swear words. It’s all a part of a tradition that believes that relationships that begin on a sour note culminate in love.

I don't know if the belief is true, but it's a lot of fun for sure. So who cares!

In many parts of Bihar, after the wedding, the mother-in-law places an earthen pot on the newly wedded bride’s head. After this, more earthen pots are added to make a pile. The bride is expected to balance them and touch the feet of the elders in the house simultaneously. The balancing of pots symbolizes how well a bride can adjust to her new family and the responsibilities of the new life.
However, this ceremony is just performed as a fun-filled welcome for the bride. Many times, the brides would drop 1-2 or many pots. Once done, the further post-wedding rituals commence!

It sounds more like a game than a ritual, isn't it?

Tamil Brahmin weddings have a super interesting ritual known as Kashi Yatra.
A mock pilgrimage is undertaken by the groom in which they pretend that he is leaving for Kashi, to renounce the world, choosing asceticism (Sanyas) over married life (Grihastha). He begins by packing his essentials according to custom and leaves the marriage. These essentials include an umbrella (for the heat and rains), coconuts (as a snack on the way), some rice, a walking stick, and a spare Dhoti. He stops only when the girl's father persuades him to take the responsibility of his daughter, by marrying her and advocates for the superiority of married life to an ascetic life. Only when convinced, the groom heads his way for the wedding pandal, where the bride and her family receive him. This beautiful custom is known as Kashi Yatra.

Seeing her daughter getting married is probably one of the biggest wishes of every mother. Unfortunately, as per the Bengali tradition, the bride's mother is not allowed to witness their own daughter’s wedding. It is believed that the daughter’s married life will be happy if mothers don’t attend the wedding. On the wedding day, early morning, all the married women in the bride’s family go to the banks of River Ganga and perform a Ganga aarti and invite the Ganga to attend the wedding so that Goddess can bless the bride.
