In Puglia’s agrarian past, working in the fields often meant encounters with spiders, especially the notorious Tarantula. According to folklore, the bite of this spider had a mysterious and potent effect: it was believed to induce a hysterical, trance-like state in its victims. Traditional remedies were thought to be powerless against the bite, and the only cure? Dancing.
This is where Pizzica played a transformative role. Legend has it that victims would succumb to a frenetic, hypnotic dance in rhythm with the tamburello, a traditional Salento tambourine. The energy and movement of the dance were believed to expel the poison and restore the victim’s vitality. While the scientific truth of this legend remains questionable, the lore of the Tarantula bite gave birth to one of the most captivating cultural expressions in Apulia.
For a time, Pizzica fell out of favor, dismissed as a relic of superstition and ignorance. But in recent decades, it has experienced a dramatic revival, embraced as a vibrant symbol of Puglian heritage. Musicians and dancers across the region have revisited and reinterpreted its rich traditions, bringing it into the modern spotlight. Today, Pizzica is a cornerstone of Apulian culture, celebrated not only locally but internationally.
