In Italy, the Christmas spirit officially begins on December 8th, with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It's a day filled with tradition, from adorning the Christmas tree to crafting the nativity scene.

Though rooted in religious significance, commemorating the day Mary was conceived free from original sin, this day unites all of Italy in a national holiday. This year, it also marks the beginning of a long weekend.

Here in Sicily, our towns come alive with festive decorations and processions, honouring the Virgin Mary. It's a time when we gather to prepare and share special dishes that have been part of our heritage. Celebrate the start of the festive season with us!

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead! We're excited to hear how you'll be spending these festive days. Drop us a comment!

Have you read the book “Leoni di Sicilia”?

Published in 2019 and followed by 'L’inverno dei leoni' in 2021, these novels unfold the extraordinary saga of the Florio family in Sicily. Transforming from humble spice sellers to influential merchants and entrepreneurs, the Florios became synonymous with fame, wealth, and power in 19th-century Italy and Europe.

The family's journey is a riveting tale of love, betrayal, dark secrets, and revenge, all set against the backdrop of Sicilian history. Despite the turmoil, the Florios earned their place as the uncrowned kings of Sicily, gracing high society with their presence.

Starting with spice trading, they diversified into tuna fishing, foundries, banking, and steamship companies. Marsala, with its flourishing wineries, played a significant role in their ascent to success. Today, you can still witness their legacy by exploring the Florio Winery, a gem purchased in 1832 by Vincenzo. Venture to Favignana to discover the tonnara bought in 1874 by Ignazio Florio, credited with inventing the revolutionary method of preserving tuna in cans.

Marsala, a place where the Florio name reigns supreme, invites you to step into history. Immerse yourself in their story through the books, and now, a series that brings their legacy to life. Plan your journey to Marsala and Favignana to trace the footsteps of the Florios and experience the richness of their impact on Sicilian culture and history.

Ready to embark on a literary and historical adventure? Explore Marsala, walk in the Florios' footsteps, and let their story unfold around you.

DID YOU KNOW?

When you envision Sicily, citrus groves may be the first images that dance in your mind. However, the island's evolving agricultural scene might surprise you! In recent times, Sicily has witnessed a shift, with avocados, mangos, and bananas flourishing in localized pockets. This adaptation is a response to the global climate shifts, and the once-unthinkable sight of tropical fruits now growing in Sicilian landscapes is a testament to farmers embracing change.

This transformation is especially notable in the fertile soil surrounding Mount Etna, where the hot and humid microclimate, coupled with minimal temperature fluctuations between day and night, provides an ideal environment for growing these exotic fruits. Over 40 farmers have embraced this tropical shift, cultivating these fruits across hundreds of hectares, and this phenomenon shows no sign of slowing down.

While Sicily faces challenges such as heat and drought impacting traditional crops, the warming climate has presented an unexpected opportunity. Growers can now profitably cultivate new crops and varieties that were once deemed challenging. The changing climate not only offers a fresh perspective for farmers but also extends the tourist season, as winter typically delays its arrival until January-February.

As you explore Sicily, the juxtaposition of mangoes, avocados, and bananas alongside traditional orange and lemon groves may catch you off guard. The island's agricultural landscape is undergoing a transformation, adapting to climate shifts while welcoming new possibilities. So, when you visit Sicily, embrace the diversity of its orchards, where tropical and Mediterranean elements coexist harmoniously.

Today, let's talk about a charming piece of Sicilian art that holds a special place in my heart – the Sicilian Cart (Carretto Siciliano). If you've been to Sicily, I bet you have seen it and have your own vivid memories of this iconic beauty.

As a child, I cherished a tiny replica of a real Sicilian Cart in my toy paradise. It was adorned with vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges, telling tales of the island's rich history, epic stories of popular religion, and scenes from everyday life and nature.

The Sicilian cart is generally two-wheeled, horse-drawn carriage. It is entirely decorated with Sicilian folk iconography and was a unique mode of transportation. Nowadays you can only see them at special events like religious celebrations, weddings, and folkloristic feats.

These carts are true works of art, adorned with intricate, colourful decorations made by talented and skilled craftsmen. Fun fact: different regions in Sicily boast carts of varying shapes and colours. Palermo's carts are trapezoidal with a yellow background and geometric decorations, while Catania's sport a rectangular shape with a red background and intricate designs.

Discovering these details later on only deepened my love for my small replica. Every sighting of a Sicilian Cart is still a joy to my eyes.

And you, have you seen them?

WHY VISITING US?

When in Palermo, I escape the hustle and bustle of the city by going to the Botanical Gardens of the University of Palermo. Located just a few blocks from the seafront, this hidden gem offers a breath of fresh air and a serene retreat from your busy day.

Founded in 1789, the Botanical Garden is a testament to the development of botany. With its vast expanse of 10 hectares and over 12,000 species of living plants, it has contributed to the advancement of botanical science, particularly in the fields of medicine and agriculture. It is one of Italy's most esteemed academic institutions.

Explore the different sectors of the park, each offering its own unique charm (maps will be provided at the entrance). Take a stroll or find a peaceful spot for a delightful picnic amidst lush greenery. Adorned with exquisite marble sculptures, including the remarkable Genius of Palermo by Ignazio Marabitti, the garden is a true work of art.

While you're here, don't miss the opportunity to witness the grandeur of Europe's largest Ficus macrophilia. Its sprawling branches extend for meters, creating a mesmerizing sight. Additionally, the Botanical Gardens support contemporary art through various exhibitions, publications, lectures, and live performances. Check their programme.

Whether you're seeking solace, a place to unwind, or simply a break from sightseeing, the Botanical Gardens offer a serene haven that will leave you refreshed and inspired.

If you've had the pleasure of visiting Sicily, you've likely crossed paths with the enchanting Pupi Siciliani, or the Sicilian puppets. The Sicilian Puppet Theatre (Opera dei Pupi) is a unique and captivating form of theatre, where animated puppets, skilfully manipulated by "puppeteers," bring to life the epic tales of medieval heroes who valiantly battled for Christendom against the Saracens.

As a child, I cherished every opportunity to witness the Pupi Siciliani and immerse myself in their tales. The puppeteers often draw inspiration from medieval chivalric literature and other sources, with a recurring theme being the clash between Charlemagne's paladins and the Muslim warriors. What's truly remarkable is that much of the dialogue is improvised by the puppeteers themselves.

Years later, I discovered that there are two distinct puppet traditions in Sicily – one in Palermo and another in Catania, each with its unique characteristics. Palermo's puppets are smaller, measuring around 80 cm and weighing up to 13 kg, while Catania's are larger, standing at about 1.30 m and weighing up to 30 kg. Differences extend to operating techniques and the array of stage backdrops. However, a common thread among them is the meticulous craftsmanship, with wooden skeletons adorned in intricate metal armour and precious fabrics. The traditional wire director for the puppets' right hand has been replaced by an iron rod, allowing for precise and direct movements during exhilarating fights and duels.

If you've yet to witness this mesmerizing Opera, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The memories of being enthralled by the heroic battles and adventures of these puppets remain etched in my heart.

WHY VISITING US?

The nature reserve of the salt pans of Marsala encompasses one of the world's most important wetlands, providing sanctuary to numerous species of migratory birds. This historically rich and tradition-laden landscape stretches along the coastline from Trapani to Marsala, intimately connected with the ancient practice of salt extraction, the 'white gold' of Sicily.

White, crystalline, and revered, this salt was once used as a valuable commodity. Even during the times of the Phoenicians and Romans, Sicilian white gold played a pivotal role in the island's economy and beyond.

However, harvesting sea salt isn't as simple as it may seem. It's a demanding, labor-intensive task that saw men, women, and young boys toil under the scorching July and August sun. Wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow, they transported the salt, forming the iconic white salt dunes that still grace this magical place today.

Exploring the salt pans in Marsala is always fascinating, whether it's a leisurely stroll, a moment of reflection, or a seaside aperitif. Yet, its allure is particularly enchanting at this time of the year as the salt dunes continue their silent transformation into the salt that enhances the flavours of our dishes.

DID YOU KNOW?

Unveiling the secret behind the zesty touch that elevates our traditional dishes, the humble caper! From fish to meat, vegetables to pizzas, this ingredient weaves its magic across our cuisine.

Capers are the youthful, unripened flower buds of the caper bush. This little powerhouse of flavour hails from the Mediterranean, as well as distant lands like Asia and Australia. Whether brined or dried, capers are the culinary companions that infuse dishes with a burst of taste, adding a tantalizing tang and satisfying texture to an array of recipes.

In the picturesque landscapes of Sicily, capers have flourished for generations, finding a special haven on the Aeolian Island of Salina. This volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea boasts seven distinct islands, each with its own allure. Salina is renowned for cultivating capers that dance with authenticity. Another Mediterranean gem, Pantelleria, also contributes its caper harvest to the culinary tapestry.

Harvesting these buds is an art in itself, and after a patient few months of preserving them in salt, the culinary treasure is unveiled. Across Sicilian kitchens, capers play a starring role in countless dishes, lending their unique character to the rich flavour.

WHY VISITING US?

Back in Palermo, where time seems to stand still. Exploring this city feels like embarking on a journey that could span years, with each corner revealing a story of its own. I've adopted a slow and deliberate pace, savouring every moment of discovery. This time, my adventure led me to Palazzo Mirto.

Nestled in the heart of the vibrant Kalsa quarter, Palazzo Mirto beckons with its tales of history and opulence. For four centuries, it was the cherished abode of the Filangeri family, the Lanza Filangeri Princes of Mirto. A legacy rooted in the rich tapestry of Norman influence that shaped Sicily and southern Italy.

Dating back to 1793, the palace stands as a testament to time's embrace. Through the ages, the palace evolved, undergoing transformations in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The building belonged to the family until 1980 when was donated to the Sicilian government.

Step inside, and you're transported to a world of grandeur that spans two centuries. The interior oozes elegance, its original furnishings impeccably preserved, offering a snapshot of Palermo's aristocratic lifestyle. Venture to the upper floors, and history unfurls before your eyes. The Baldachin salon, the Novelli Room, the intricate Chinese room, and the Arazzi Hall adorned with mythological tales painted by Giuseppe Velasco in 1804 – each space tells a captivating story.

Today, Palazzo Mirto stands as more than just a relic of the past. It's a living museum, granting you passage into the life of a noble Palermo family. Here, you will glean insights into the opulent lives of Sicilian nobility, a testament to an extravagant chapter in history.

WHY VISITING US?

Just over one hour away from our villa, as you head toward Palermo, lies a hidden gem, the Riserva Naturale Orientata di Capo Gallo.

Within the reserve, tucked into the mountain's wall along a small inlet, you stumble upon the Grotta dell’Olio – a cave partially submerged and waiting to be explored. As this is a protected reserve, only non-motorized boats can access the cave.

Therefore, you have a few options to reach it: take a leisurely walk from the Sferracavallo-Barcarello entrance to the Avamposto, which is staffed during the summer and offers free canoes. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, rent a kayak from Isola delle Femmine and paddle your way along the coast to the cave.

This spot is a hit with snorkelers and divers. The underwater journey usually kicks off just outside the cave, where depths reach around 14 meters. Inside, you'll find yourself in a roomy dome that stretches 109 meters in height and 20 meters in width. The play of sunlight on the rocks creates a unique visual spectacle that's hard to describe.

But here's the insider tip: know the tide schedule. During high tide, the only way to enter the cave is by swimming. So, plan accordingly and get ready for an aquatic adventure that's as real as it gets!.
