How can design be more genderless and inclusive?

Today, we're excited to reconnect for a new session featuring some of the most talented female designers who have been part of the Superdesign Show .

We present Tina Rugelj, an architect and interior designer who also works in product design.

She worked for some of Slovenia's most prestigious architectural firms before establishing her own practice in 2011. Her first outdoor furniture line, 'Concrete Garden', was designed in 2012, and it wowed both the media and critics.

She joined the Supedesign show in 2022 presenting ‘Tales of the Adriatic’, a furniture collection that captures the beauty of the Mediterranean and motifs central to life on the Adriatic.

How can design be more genderless and inclusive?

Welcome back to a new appointment with female designers presenting Nika Zupanc.

She is a well-known Slovenian product and interior designer.

In 2009 and 2010, she took part in the Superdesign Show, presenting collections in collaboration with two Slovenian design firms, Gorenje and Trimo, as well as Moooi.

Her design philosophy is built on the search for an icon; a recognisable shape, color or material reinterpreted into a physical object.

Her feminine items are emphasized by the romantic and ostentatious approach to design, which gives them a dramatic and rebellious appeal while maintaining a poetic narrative.

How can design be more genderless and inclusive?

Welcome back to a new appointment with female designers presenting Paola Navone.

She is a renowned designer who has created events and exhibitions all over the world. She has worked with many of the biggest companies in the Italian and global design scenes, and she still does.

In 2010, she participated in the Superdesign Show for the first time, showcasing a scenographic work that interpreted the Barovier&Toso glass in a big, gloomy room illuminated by intricately designed, custom-built lamps in shades of blue.

Her final participation in the event took place in 2022, when she exhibited the "Poetry House '' installation for ABK Ceramiche.

In this piece, she reinterpreted various material inspirations—like wood and stone—in an ironic and unorthodox way, summarizing the eclectic and surreal vision that is distinctive to the designer's work.

How can design be more genderless and inclusive?

Welcome back to a new appointment with female designers presenting Carolina Nisivoccia , an architect, artistic director and professor.

“When considering the design industry in its purest form, gender is the last thing that springs to mind.

I have always considered design neutral, and I think drawing attention to the gender issue makes gender differences much more evident!

So, this is the first step: even in good faith, do not think of the profession as a male or female issue but rather as a competence issue.

In my opinion, the actual domain to address gender imbalance is the home one.
We begin there.

The deeply ingrained attitudes that underpin every one of us—women included—in our everyday lives are the foundation of the mental attitude, which is frequently unconscious, of respect for women at work.

Although I don't have any specific projects in mind to use as examples of success, the following would be a perfect project: To free women from the "burden" mental and physical, I'm considering designing a relationship that would help them see and then break the pattern that has always existed.

This would enable them to view themselves and others differently.

I suggest reading "Bastava chiedere!"*it's as quick and simple to read as it is powerful, and you'll find yourself reevaluating your habits and noticing previously unconsidered angles.

THINKING DIFFERENT
everything, everywhere, everyone
,

It is an invitation to step outside the box, to stand out in the crowded design landscape for a look beyond offering solutions that are certainly aesthetic, elegant, functional, for our homes, the environments we live in, architecture, the urban landscape, mobility, but also aware of every diversity with which sharing the same message of beauty and ease of use.

Furthermore, it is an invitation to think on how design has become global - - has redesigned and is redesigning objects and immaterial subjects - - towards an unstoppable change of all the "elements" of our everyday life, aware of the most difficult challenge: try to answer with design to the needs of the many diversities and disabilities that surround us to which we can offer the same research, attention, technology and beauty that we use for "ordinary" projects - -.

How can design be more genderless and inclusive?

Welcome back to a new appointment with female designers presenting Carla Tolomeo, a multidimensional artist who has worked with significant fashion companies, art museums, and galleries and also has joined ‘s editions.

“It is always the result of investigation, experience, culture, sensitivity, and "duende," that enigmatic something that determines creative energy.

I have many thoughts that "genre" may determine various forms of creativity.

In more sophisticated realities, gender equality is prevalent or, at the very least, completely upheld. This includes equitable task distribution, appropriate help during reproduction, and complete equality in the assessment of merit and, consequently, in reward.

Therefore, the actual "gender" difference is a product of society, which frequently limits or inhibits women's creativity.

As a female gender spokesperson, I come from a distant place, from difficulties and even periods of reclaiming, but I have always managed to escape.

I wanted to think and feel that the superiority of the outcome is what makes a difference and creates certain areas for coexisting. I also felt and feel that this is the right course to take. You can strive for the outcome as long as you know it and awareness motivates you. Success was never something I sought; instead, I just sought the ideal setting to manifest my limitless potential.

I’m me” ✨

Last but not least, we present Antonio Facco , one of the ten rising designers selected by Giulio Cappellini and featured in the "I'm - STARS OF TODAY" exhibition during the 2023 Superdesign Show.

To find out more about the designer, read how he presents himself.

"It could come off as brash or haughty. Contrarily, it is provocatively the other way around. Being oneself becomes more difficult in a worldwide society when people will do whatever to appease others and avoid social criticism. The secret to fostering creativity is regaining one's own critical faculties in order to protect uncertainty against imposed models."

To find out more about the designer, read how he presents himself.

“If you’re not curious, forget about it. If you are not interested in others, what they do and how they behave, then being a designer is not for you”, said Achille Castiglioni

I was motivated by this phrase to choose "CURIOUS" as the word for the Stars of Today.

I believe that designing something involves more than just considering how it should look or function, whether it be a piece of architecture, a space, a dress, or an exhibition.

A connection between the thing and the person is established as a result of a behavior being drawn to the thing.

One of the things that interests me about design is how it turns an object into the "prologue" of a story that anybody of us may make.

In my job, I try to track down those tales, hear them, understand them, to "write" new ones.”

I'm - STARS OF TODAY" durante Superdesign Show 2023.

Oggi presentiamo Matteo Agati.

“I am color. It is an answer that I can easily give by closing my eyes for a second and thinking "what identifies me as an artist and a person?".

Color has always been my greatest source of expression, since the shape, no matter how beautiful it may be, is never complete if it is not accompanied by the perfect color combination.

In addition, color has the power to change our mood and improve it without us realizing it.”

“ When I received this request from Giulio to state I am "..." in a single word for the show, my first spontaneous reaction was, "Why do I do that?".

It gave me a nice moment to think about such a simple question.

Then I understood questioning was the origin of everything in a way because, without question, there is no discussion and no improvements.

Questioning is a way to provoke optimisation in our society, and I felt it formalises what I am trying to do through design. ”

Let's start with "Urban Tree Lounge," by the great Stefano Boeri - Stefano Boeri Architetti in collaboration with Material ConneXion and 3M Design.

In 2016, we had the pleasure to host this "Super" project that combines architecture and materials in fresh and imaginative ways.

The "tree" installation incorporates several 3M materials including films, nonwovens and adhesives to create an experience where light dances, thoughts reflect, and minds recharge.

It is essentially a tree with electronic leaves that carries out a variety of social functions like offering shade, a place to relax, hosting events, and charging devices.

How can design be more genderless and inclusive?

We're back with fresh content that celebrates female designers and their works.

ESPIdesign , a designer who took part in the Fooddesignstories and Other Stories exhibition project during Superdesign Show 2023 is our featured contributor today.

"The goal of object design, like that of living, is to be as inclusive as feasible.

It must start the creative process by putting people at the center. Exclusive is the antithesis of inclusive, which is also free and customizable.

Listening and empathy are necessary.

Since I aim not to impose rigid limitations in my designs, for example, the items in my Convivio collection are frequently used in a variety of ways, and the homes, which I co-create with the client to allow active choice-making, provide options for changing and adaptable use throughout time."

-

[ITA]

“Since I was a little child, I have known that my most effective form of self-expression and communication is through visual language.

The power of signs, drawings, colors, and material collages became evident right away. Humans, with all of their flaws and aspirations, are always at the center of my designs.

The formal essence of my projects, which represent the objectification of the narrative I want to communicate, is the product of a study process.

In addition to stories about marvelous crafts and the development of our way of life, they often discuss contemporary events, sometimes even horrific ones.”

How can design be more genderless and inclusive?

We talked with Caterina Misuraca and Sandra Faggiano of Fooddesignstories and Other Stories, an exhibition project that took part during Superdesign Show ‘s latest editions, who tell us about their project in the following words:

Food Design Stories pays homage to living poetically by interpreting the Greek verb "poieo" (which means "to do") as "to do" while also "taking care" of the environment by taking measures that do not endanger its health.

Is design the solution?

In the midst of the pandemic, several authoritative voices echoed the same query, and at that crucial moment, we were confronted with images of women from all over Italy who, using their own hands, created and continue to create "things" that, despite their variety of forms and ideologies, shared a common philosophy and attention to the sustainability of raw materials and the manufacturing process.

Women have always been the creators of "cure" since ancient times, and even in the antipodes, "cure" has evolved into an inclusive route of visions. Our "table of wonders" was thus formed, giving a voice to people who could not have done it alone. It is a virtual and physical symposium on as many different types of beauty that can coexist in a "convivium" that recognizes no boundaries and frontiers.”

—-

[ITA]
