SuperOtium has been designing and curating talks, workshops and meetings at his own place in collaboration with other local, national and international organizations. SuperOtium was strongly desired and generated by Nicola Ciancio (author and curator of cultural projects and creative director for events) and Vincenzo Falcione (project manager in the field of Ecology and Environment). Their intention was to give life to an innovative project to enhance Naples’s role as a lively container of art, which it has convincingly played from ancient times to our day; a city which has always been an inspiring muse, a stage and showcase of the world. www.superotium.it

Yesterday, SuperOtium came alive with voices, encounters, and shared moments as we welcomed Amor Vacui, the artwork by Martina Merlini , conceived during her 2024 artist residency.

A wooden wall sculpture in three elements that explores the concept of emptiness in Naples, tracing places marked by absences and hidden memories. A piece shaped through collaboration with project partners and the public, now becoming part of SuperOtium’s permanent collection.

A new layer enriching the dialogue between art and hospitality, opening fresh perspectives on the city through the eyes of the artists we meet along the way.

Thank you to everyone who shared this special evening with us!

Martina Merlini’s residency received the Matronato of Museo Madre and was supported by L'Arsenale di Napoli, Open House Napoli, Attiva Cultural Projects, altofest.net, TeatrInGestAzione, Studio Cervo, aquaaugusta, , Underneath The Arches .

On January 28 at 6.30pm, join us for the presentation of AMOR VACUI – Martina Merlini – Presentazione dell’opera, a work by Martina Merlini created during her residency at SuperOtium under the matronage of Museo Madre and supported by a network of local partners.

This project maps the concept of emptiness in Naples, tracing places filled with absences, memories, and hidden meanings.

Three big sculptures reflect this journey: a parking lot carved into a quarry, a basilica steeped in silence, and a monumental complex where time stands still. Each form emerges from encounters, stories, and the unpredictability of perception.

For example, Seynabou Sonko , the writer in residence at Villa Medici - Villa Médicis , who wanted to extend her visit to Naples, found in SuperOtium a safe space in which to continue her work.

Join us on the 28th of January for the presentation of AMOR VACUI – Martina Merlini – Presentazione dell’opera , a new work by Martina Merlini , conceived during her 2024 residency at with the Matronage of the Museo Madre .

The piece delves into the concept of emptiness in Naples—a city where empty spaces are rare, often feared, and far removed from everyday experience. Inspired by contrasts between boundaries and their dissolution, chance within precise forms, and rationality versus intuition, Merlini’s work charts emptiness through encounters, memories, and emotions tied to significant places.

By day, chaos and colors. By night, stillness and mystery.
The Pignasecca Market reveals a different soul when the crowds fade—an unexpected calm where shadows invite imagination, and light becomes a story waiting to be told.

“Santa Lucia” by Matilde Cassani —a striking piece first unveiled at the Manifesta Biennial in Palermo— was exhibited for 24 hours in the courtyard of SuperOtium during the artist’s residency. This fleeting installation added a layer of meaning to Cassani’s exploration of the relationship between rituals, desires, and the transformation of spaces.

Now housed within SuperOtium, the work awaits the artist’s return and the unveiling of her residency research findings.

Stay tuned for what’s next in this inspiring dialogue between art and space!

The residency has received the Matronage of the Museo Madre and the collaboration of Complesso museale di Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco, Migrantour Napoli CASBA Soc. Coop. Sociale, and L'Arsenale di Napoli.

In November, things were calm, but December brings us a double event to close the year on a high note!

On December 10th, starting at 6:30 PM, we’ll present ASK PARTENOPE, featuring Questions to Partenope from seven curators, journalists, and thinkers. These contributors have accepted our invitation to create a shared narrative of Naples in anticipation of its 2,500th anniversary. Contributors include: Domitilla Dardi, Pietro Gaglianò, Paolo Ferrarini, Lorenzo Xiques López, Adriana Rispoli, Donatella Bernabo' Silorata, Susanna Ravelli .

This event will also be an opportunity to meet Matilde Cassani , the artist and designer kicking off her residency at SuperOtium on the same day. On December 15th at 5:00 PM, she’ll present the initial findings of her research into the intertwining of pagan and Catholic rituals in Naples’ public spaces, alongside some of her previous works.

Her residency, which includes a collaboration with Complesso museale di Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco , has been honored with the Matronato from Museo Madre .

We look forward to welcoming you to SuperOtium!
