📖 The recent discovery in Pompeii, in a large banquet hall in Insula 10 of Regio IX, has revealed an extraordinary fresco that sheds new light on the mysteries of Dionysus in the classical world. This fresco, a rare “megalography” (a large-scale painting), unfolds across three sides of the room, depicting a procession of Dionysus, the god of wine. The images show Bacchae as dancers and hunters, satyrs playing the double flute, and a scene of acrobatic libation, with wine being poured from a drinking horn into a shallow cup.

At the center of the composition, a mortal woman is about to be initiated into the mysteries of Dionysus, a ritual that promises rebirth, akin to the death and resurrection of the god. This discovery, over a century after the famous Villa of the Mysteries was uncovered, brings new insights into these ancient cults and their artistic depictions.

The fresco is part of an iconographic tradition rooted in the Dionysian mysteries, a god symbolizing the cycle of death and rebirth, which fascinated the Roman imagination through secret rituals.
