Research has shown a year-round climate-neutral cultivation has been demonstrated for cut Anthurium flowers!
Conducted over 26 months, the cultivation executed during this research used no fossil fuels for electricity of heating. It solely relied on 'all-electric' solutions. The greenhouse featured double-layer insulation with transparent glass and diffuse film, reducing heat demand via efficient insulation and a heat pump.
Four Anthurium varieties (Calisto, Eterno, Midori, Moments) were grown in Rockwool cubes, with production results matching commercial standards in terms of quality, yield, and shelf life. Heat needs were sustainably met using dehumidification installations and electricity for heat pumps and fans. The project also advanced efforts to minimise crop protection product emissions.
While no technical or crop-related barriers were identified for practical implementation, further research is needed to address outstanding knowledge gaps. The cultivation of Anthuriums is making significant progress towards climate neutrality. This is an exciting result which is a great sign for the cut Anthurium market!
