¡𝐄𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐬 (𝐆𝐓𝐂) 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚 𝐬𝐮 𝟏𝟓 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨!

Not the in Rome, but certainly a colosseum for science.

In this picture taken on 2 August, the moonlight 🌕 graces the structure of our Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) dome — now 80 metres high and with construction progress visible almost every day!

The ELT project is more than 50% complete and, when finished, its dome will weigh in at 6100 tonnes & will need a mind-boggling 30 million bolts 🔩 to be held together!

Welcome back Orion ✨

APOD: A Comet and Two Dippers (2023 Feb 07)

Explanation: Can you still see the comet? Yes. Even as C/2022 E3 (ZTF) fades, there is still time to see it if you know where and when to look. Geometrically, Comet ZTF has passed its closest to both the Sun and the Earth and is now headed back to the outer Solar System. Its orbit around the Sun has it gliding across the northern sky all month, after passing near Polaris and both the Big and Little Dippers last month. Pictured, Comet ZTF was photographed between the two dippers in late January while sporting an ion tail that extended over 10 degrees. Now below naked-eye visibility, Comet ZTF can be found with binoculars or a small telescope and a good sky map. A good time to see the comet over the next week is after the Sun sets -- but before the Moon rises. The comet will move nearly in front of Mars in a few days

Stargazing was never this cool! 🌌 This amazing panoramic view was taken at Cerro Pachón in Chile during NOIRLab’s Photo Expedition. On the right, the Gemini Observatory South telescope projects its laser guide star into the atmosphere. In the sky above the telescope, from left to right, lie the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds and the star Canopus. On the other end of the image is the SOAR Telescope with three stars above it forming the semblance of a triangle.
There are many more objects in the night sky than these, though it is quite impressive to capture this many with just a panorama! Use the scroll icon to navigate the image! 🤩

Each year, the Globe at Night international community science campaign, a program of NSF’s NOIRLab, raises awareness about the impact of light pollution by inviting community scientists to measure and submit night sky brightness observations. All you need is a computer, tablet, or smartphone. And their webapp is available in 28 languages!

Globe at Night will be collecting observations for all twelve months of the year. This large set of measurements will be compared to measurements from prior years in the same month to provide a comprehensive view of the changes to the night sky quality worldwide.

Swamped Skies — The effect of on the night sky 🛰️

📷 This amazing shot, captured by Joshua Rozells, is a composite stack of 343 photos blended together.

The author says: “In late January, I went out to the Pinnacles, Western Australia, to shoot a star trail. Upon reviewing my photos, I noticed an unusually large number of satellites in my photos; there were satellite trails visible in almost every single photo from over 3 hours of shooting. Instead of trying to get rid of them for a star trail, I decided to put the satellite trails together into a single image to show how polluted the night sky is becoming.”
