Sweet idleness, or “dolce far niente” in Italian, opens the door to creativity.

Boredom can be a new therapy!

As our dear partner Orazio Bisazza at Borgo Storico Pantano suggested, the problem is that nowadays, many find this “doing nothing” scary.

Instead of using that time to reflect on ourselves and what surrounds us, many fill that emptiness with social media or quick forms of entertainment.

Yet experts say that a bit of boredom can be good for children and adults. It can stimulate creativity and problem-solving while giving the brain time to recharge.

Borgo Pantano Storico is one of those magical venues where time seems to sit still, yet there is so much going on around you.

It is a medieval hamlet in Sicily that was once abandoned and is now being restored by the Bisazza Family.

Here, you can host an event outdoors, among the terraced hills where ancient cultivation methods are carried out, among the orchards or vegetable gardens, or in the small piazze and alleys that make up Borgo Pantano.

The venue is ideal for team-building experiences involving artisanal workshops or farming activities.

Your attendees will be surely inspired by the place and the activites, and even by the moments of “dolce far niente”, surrounded by so much beauty, nature and history.

Staying ahead of the curve is not just an advantage. It's a necessity.

Six trends are poised to reshape the landscape of events, driving innovation and deeper connections.

The recently unveiled insights from Amadeus, MPI, and Salesforce provide a roadmap for what's to come.

As event professionals who have long championed authentic experiences for small groups and destinations off the beaten path, we were particularly thrilled to read that:

"The desire for more thoughtfully curated events – boutique experiences, unique venues, and exclusive spaces within hotels and resorts – is increasing. Smaller cities that can provide attendees with unique, fresh experiences have gained popularity as event locations."

--
How are you planning to incorporate any of these trends into your strategy for 2024 and 2025?

Let's discuss how we can leverage these insights to create more impactful and memorable experiences in our industry!

10 years ago, we were already sharing our concerns with overtourism.

Fast forward to 2024, and the issue remains just as pressing.

As professionals in the tourism and events industry, our responsibility has only grown.

If we don't act, we risk eroding the cultural heritage that draws people to iconic sites in the first place.

We must continue educating travellers on exploring new destinations with mindfulness and sustainability in mind.

This isn't just about discovering hidden gems off the beaten path—though that's certainly part of it—but also about rethinking how we approach even the most popular locations.

In an old, yet still relevant, article on our blog, we illustrated how you can experience Rome differently, emphasising sustainability and deeper cultural engagement.
That message is more relevant than ever today.

Italy offers so much more than just Rome, Florence, and Venice, and it's up to us to guide travellers towards experiences that preserve the beauty and integrity of these places for future generations.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games set a high standard for sustainability in event planning.

Here are 2 reasons why:

1. The day before the Olympic Games opened, the first Summit on Sport for Sustainable Development ( ) occurred.

On this occasion, France and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) wanted to launch an unprecedented movement to accelerate the contribution of sport to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

This is an example of how an event can inspire policy change that creates a global positive impact.

2. The Paris 2024 Committee used the guidance of ISO 20121 as part of the effort to make the Olympic Games the "most responsible and sustainable games in history".

From solar panels to gardens, recycled material mattresses to seashell sidewalks, the Olympic Committee has built something that is meant to last.

It also prioritised using existing or temporary infrastructures, promoted reusable bottles in all venues to reduce waste, and introduced more responsible local catering.

At Italian Special Occasions, we, too, use ISO 20121 to improve our education and make our events more sustainable.

As one of the Positive Impact global ambassadors, we are proud to have access to valuable resources to continue learning and developing.

For example:

>The Event Sustainability Management Systems standard is versatile and applicable to events of all sizes.

It guides organisations to seamlessly integrate sustainability into every facet of event planning and delivery - all with legacy in mind.

>The Human and Child Rights and Safeguarding Toolkit offers events teams guidance in delicate but essential matters.

We think it's a vital resource to be professionals who can deliver events aligned with our planet's and communities' needs.

At a time when regulations on greenwashing are increasing, ISO 20121:2024 is the only credible way forward.

Imagine starting your day in the sun-drenched vineyards of Tuscany…

At Italian Special Occasions DMC & Events, we delight in creating artisan Italian wine tours for private and corporate groups!

Our itineraries highlight sustainable wineries that produce quality wines and provide an immersive experience.

For example, we took a group of delegates to visit Rocca di Frassinello, a beautiful winery built by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano.

Participants had the chance to explore it with an architect and an oenologist, who explained the creative concepts behind the building and the winemaking process.
Of course, wine tasting with local specialities was part of the visit, too!

The combination of these elements provided depth to the experience, allowing the group to enjoy wine tasting in an authentic and unexpected way.

Rocca di Frassinello is in Maremma, a little-known area in southern Tuscany. Despite being off the beaten path, this event destination is well connected with Rome's International Airport.

As event planners, it's crucial to address overtourism, particularly in beautiful yet overcrowded destinations like Rome and Venice.

At Italian Special Occasions DMC, we champion sustainability through deseasonalisation and delocalisation, promoting travel outside peak seasons and highlighting lesser-known gems.

By focusing on quality experiences and supporting local communities, we can offer clients authentic, enriching events while preserving Italy's cultural heritage.

Behind the scenes when planning an event!

A huge thank you to my incredible suppliers and partners—your hard work and commitment help bring my visions to life.

Here's to many more extraordinary events together! 🎉

"Thank you for a MOST amazing wedding celebration. Erin had the most amazing time, and that was due largely to your hard work to make everything perfect ❤"

"I keep dreaming of Italy and what an incredible memory and experience you helped create."

"The entire trip was like a dream. We will certainly be back soon!"

We are delighted to share some heartfelt testimonials from Erin, Brandon, and their guests following the destination wedding we organised for them.

Creating such memorable experiences, where we oversee every detail from A to Z, is at the heart of what we do.

Our mission is also to create events that showcase Italy's natural beauty, authenticity, and rich cultural heritage.

Venturing out multiple times per year to discover extraordinary venues is no easy task. Still, the hard work is worth it – especially after such excellent testimonials confirming that our event was exceptional!

Countless incredible destinations remain overlooked. Why?

While online platforms offer extensive information on hotels and transport, but niche insights are harder to come by.

Often, this is due to a tendency to stick to familiar, easy-to-sell destinations.

That's where a Destination Management Company (DMC) like Italian Special Occasions steps in.

For example, we leverage our local knowledge and connections to:

> Provide insider information on authentic venues and recommend the best season-region combinations to avoid overtourism.

> Be an innovator, crafting out-of-the-box events in surprising places with experiences that reflect the true essence of the destination.

This approach helps event planners and leisure travellers explore off-the-beaten-path destinations and promotes responsible tourism and event management.

We believe the value of a DMC is enormous because it can be a time saver, a one-stop-shop and thus a money saver.

If you are aiming for a quality and successful event, remember that the price of a DMC includes years of expertise, careful selection of products, and a deep connection with local communities, offering much more than standard services available online.

Can you spot the differences?

This is a clear example of how mass tourism makes you NOT want to see a place anymore.

When you find yourself in situations like this, you don’t enjoy the place – whether you are the tourist who travels or the person providing services locally.

In high season, prices are wild, and there is often little organisation.

Tour guides and services strive to accommodate the influx, often at the expense of authenticity and quality.

This rush can dampen the joy of tourists and locals, as the true essence of the Amalfi Coast gets lost in the hustle.

On the other hand, low and mid-seasons offer a tranquil escape, allowing you to immerse yourself in the genuine charm of the region.

Visitors can savour local culture without the rush. And locals can provide services in a relaxed, sustainable manner, ensuring a more enriching and authentic experience.

Timing can make all the difference in your event and travel experience!

What are your thoughts on traveling during off-peak seasons? Have you experienced the difference?

In a world flooded with negative news, we often forget the incredible stories of hope.

One such story is about the children of the Victoria Sports Association in Kenya.

This grassroots organization inspires by helping disadvantaged children stay in school through the power of sports.

Coach Dennis Otieno founded the association in 2006.

Despite his humble origins and living in a slum, his dedication led him to attend 3 coaching courses in football, one of which was a funded scholarship in Rome.

Dennis believes that education and sports are fundamental pillars for the holistic development of children – and we agree with him.

Education empowers young minds, promoting critical thinking, innovation, and economic growth.

On the other hand, sports teach invaluable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, resilience, and leadership.

The activities organised by VSA Kenya include talks on the importance of planting and preserving trees and the environment, s*x ed and community empowerment.

VSA’s programme promotes the physical health and mental well-being of girls and boys, creating well-rounded individuals ready to contribute positively to society.

As event planners committed to making a positive impact, we are happy to support VSA Kenya.

At our events, we distribute branded water bottles to attendees, with proceeds going towards the association's education fees and sports activities.

Why settle for the ordinary when you can offer an exceptional experience with unique activities?

For example:

Most business groups that visit Emilia Romagna for an incentive trip, end up at the Ferrari Museum.

It’s a great experience, no doubt, but very common and almost “expected”.

To go beyond the obvious and leave a lasting impact on delegates, I surprised them with unexpected activities in this beautiful region, such as:

> A workshop about Byzantine embroidery in Ravenna, the capital of mosaics.

> A bike tour along the musical footsteps of legends Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscanini.

> Reconnecting with nature and themselves through spiritual walks along ancient pilgrim routes in the Apennines and Po River valley.

In our new blog post, we explain why Emilia Romagna should be your next meeting and incentive destination.

We envision a future where:

👉 "Yesterday" was made of children locked in an unreal world of video games;

👉"Today" is about children with creativity unlocked thanks to the ability to use their hands and imagination while respecting the environment and the community.

There is no "one-size-fits-all" solution for achieving certain dreams.

But we can all work on inspiring projects that can be replicated anywhere.

Our founder, Laura Notarbartolo, had two main aims when she established "Creando si impara" (by creating, you learn):

1) To promote education, sustainable tourism and responsible consumption (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4, 8 and 12) among the young generation.

2) To create an approach that is replicable worldwide so that children, the environment and artists could benefit from it anywhere.

"By creating, you learn" teaches the art of recycling to children.

There are three main pillars at its base:

1) Eco Labs revolve around crafts and nature, enabling the young participants to create art pieces with recycled materials using the imagination as a primary tool.

2) The workshops are led by expert and creative artists focusing on environmental sustainability through art.

3) The venue is somewhere off the beaten path, a little-known destination that can benefit from responsible tourism.

For example, our pilot project is led by the talented environmental artist RE and is based in Feudo S.Pietro.

This historical venue is on course to become a "lung" for the hidden gem of Milazzo, promoting culture and education among the locals.

How do you think we can further inspire creativity and sustainability among the younger generation in our communities?

Why did we create our sister company, Creative Italy?

The idea came from the desire to support local artisans and preserve the real Made in Italy.

Creative Italy's mission aligns with SDGs 4 and 12, focusing on quality education and responsible consumption and production.

These perfectly align and combine with the goals of our DMC, which also promotes SDG 8 for sustainable tourism.

We rely on to enhance your corporate events with authentic experiences in Italy off the beaten path.

For example, by joining the artisan retreats by Creative Italy, your delegates will:

🔹 Learn ancient artisan techniques and discover ways to use them nowadays to improve their daily lives.

🔹Benefit mentally and spiritually from such a meaningful and memorable experience of re-learning to be creative and use manual skills.

🔹 Discover local territories and inspiring locations.

🔹Practically see and feel the positive impact that their presence and activity are having on the local community.

Transforming your team's potential while promoting sustainable tourism.

This is one of our goals.

Here is how we do it in 2 steps:

1) Experiences are created to value human capital through well-being.

For example, we conceive team-building activities that positively impact the participants' mind and body.

Craft workshops, cooking lessons, and art experiments are among our favourite options.

They engage intellectual creativity and manual skills, transforming how delegates see problems and engage with tasks.

We align our activities with the specific well-being goals of the client company, ensuring each event is meaningful and beneficial.

2) We identify regions that can benefit from sustainable tourism and propose them as event destinations.

Maremma and Milazzo are two examples. Both are located in very popular regions, respectively Tuscany and Sicily, but are relatively unknown.

They are home to ancient traditions, rich history and pristine nature reserves that must be respected and cared for.

We explain to our clients how we can organise incentives, retreats or events in such delicate destinations to promote development and safeguard the environment.

And we stress the importance of embracing a local destination's imperfections as we aim to contribute positively and give back to the community.

How much importance do you place on the development of sustainable tourism when choosing an event destination and activities?

There is a "new" type of tourism that goes beyond sustainability.

It's called Regenerative Tourism.

This was one of the highlights that most caught our attention during this year's IMEX.

Although we could not join personally, we followed the event virtually.

"Regenerative tourism is about leaving a better trace", explained Richard Crawford during the session The Power of Responsible Travel: Creating Positive Impact through Sustainable Tourism.

It aims to minimise impact and actively improve and restore the environments and communities where tourism occurs.

Even though we never called it regenerative tourism before, it's what we have been aiming for and working for in the last decade.

Practical projects like Creative Italy and Creando Si Impara show how events can promote regenerative tourism. Through them, travelling delegates interact with local communities and help preserve their heritage, environment and historical places.

Hats off to Costa Rica for once more being cited as a model for sustainable tourism.

We hope that Italy will soon lead the way in regenerative tourism. The country is undoubtedly going in the right direction, with the rise in eco-friendly accommodations and carbon footprint awareness in travel.

Much more must be done in terms of overtourism, and that's why we are committed to educating travellers about their environmental impact and the benefits of sustainable tourism.

From CEO burnout ➡️ to blissful wellness.

Here is how to achieve it with a corporate retreat.

1. Choose an authentic event destination.

For example, we choose Le Marche for a recent retreat.

This region is a hidden gem offering the quintessential Italian experience but with few tourists.

2. Select the ideal venue for the retreat.

For a group of 10 CEOs suffering burnout, we chose an organic farm.

With its lush gardens, olive groves and breathtaking countryside views, the venue provided the perfect sanctuary for rejuvenation and relaxation.

3. Design and combine appropriate activities

The retreat combined physical activities and relaxation techniques tailored to combat burnout.

Daily yoga and pilates sessions were conducted at sunrise, allowing the CEOs to start their day with mindfulness and serenity.

A fitness personal trainer was available for those who preferred a more dynamic approach to wellness.

4. Beyond wellness

Nutrition was crucial in the retreat, focusing on healthy, sustainable eating.

A local chef prepared meals using fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local markets and the farm’s vegetable garden.

Furthermore, the CEOs did an Ethical Cooking Class, something they had never heard of.

The experience consisted in:

>“Learning” how to shop at the grocery store, in a local market or at a farm. Aspects like what food we buy and where it comes from impact our meals and shape our world.

> Budgeting and preparing meals to minimise waste, appreciating the journey of their food from the earth to their plate.

This approach ensured that the positive experience extended beyond the retreat, enlightening participants to cultivate a sustainable lifestyle through informed food choices.

It all started with a request to plan a team building with a dinner in Turin!

The client wanted its employees to:

1. overcome some communication challenges;

2. learn about and get inspired by sustainable practices to apply in their projects.

To combine creativity with sustainability and communication, we proposed a plastic-recycling workshop.

The activity occurred in a beautiful villa off the beaten path in Turin. It was led by artist Emanuela Ravidà (RE), an expert in the Ironed Plastic technique.

Our team designed this activity to:

> develop empathy and appreciation of different perspectives among participants;

> encourage participants to collaborate and discuss between them to create a cohesive and collective work of art that symbolised their company's creative and sustainable soul.

We chose another unusual venue for the dinner to showcase Turin's diversity and richness.

The Museo Egizio celebrates 200 years in 2024! It is considered the world's second most important Egyptological collection, after the Egyptian Museum of Cairo.

Here, participants had the chance to meet the young entrepreneurs behind the "Trafficanti di Pasta" project.

These innovators create different pasta types with flours made with ancient grains. All are strictly handmade and strongly linked to the traditions of Italian cuisine of the past.

There was an inspiring discussion on the zero-waste philosophy of the Trafficanti di Pasta and how they innovate while preserving ancient traditions.

Participants discussed how they could apply this vision to their workspace and daily routines in the office and at home.

The dinner featured delicious pasta types combined with different sauces, all prepared with ancient grains and organic ingredients.

The solemn and mysterious ambience of the Egyptian hall provided the perfect backdrop for an original and memorable evening!

What is one issue that stops you from planning an event in Italy? 🤔

Common myths about our country include transfer issues and the belief that summer is the ideal time to organise an event.

In reality, finding the best season-region combination is important to creating a flawless and sustainable event.

Each season offers exciting and authentic activities for you to enjoy across Italy, avoiding mass tourism.

Unusual examples often ignored by guidebooks include:

❄️ In winter, you can visit ancient sites in Sardinia, namely the impressive Nuraghi, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

🌸 In spring, you can bike among Apulia's iconic "trulli" and massive trees in the Pianelle Nature Reserve, once a land of brigands.

☀️ In summer, in the Alps, you can hike along the ancient trails used by herders during the traditional Transumanza or the seasonal movement of livestock between pastures.

🌰 In autumn, you can taste the flavours of the Marche region, a food paradise that is little known abroad, after harvesting truffles and mushrooms in the woods.

If you are worried about logistics and prices, don't let ""off-the-beaten-track"" destinations put you off.

On the contrary, the overall organisation, including transportation, might be even cheaper than hosting your event in touristic hubs.

We've done and seen it all: we make sure to inspect all the destinations and activities we book so you don't have to worry about it.

Pasta-making with an expert Italian chef!

Why is it a great team-building activity in Italy?

1. Cultural Immersion
Pasta-making is integral to Italian culture. Engaging in this activity allows delegates to immerse themselves in the local tradition.

2. Shared Experience
Delegates work together towards a common goal, fostering teamwork and a sense of unity among team members.

3. Communication and collaboration
Delegates must work together to follow instructions, share tasks, and problem-solve as a team. This strengthens communication skills and promotes collaboration.

4. Fun and relaxation
Cooking together in an informal setting gives delegates a break from their usual routine. It allows them to unwind, bond, and have fun outside of the work environment.

5. Sense of achievement
Successfully making pasta from scratch instils a sense of pride. This shared accomplishment boosts morale and motivates team members to confidently tackle challenges.

6. Memorable experience
A pasta-making lesson is a unique and authentic experience that teams will remember fondly, strengthening their connections with each other and Italy.

Our philosophy revolves around the following core principles:

•Embracing local culture and traditions, and weaving this precious heritage into the event experiences;

•Promoting off-the-beaten-track destinations through our extensive regional knowledge;
