In a stunning lakeside location just outside Rome, Palazzola is a 13th-century Cistercian monastery, fully refurbished and modernised with a large swimming pool, chapel, rustic food and a breathtaking garden terrace. As the sun sets across the still waters of a wide lake, the domes of a papal palace glint in the evening light, drawing the eye to the imperial city of Rome below and onwards to the M

editerranean glistening in the far distance. In the silence and harmony of dusk the only sound is birdsong and the hooting of the occasional owl perched in the trees on the slopes running down to the lakeshore. Then picture the cloister of a medieval building in an idyllic setting, lovingly restored with comfortable en-suite bedrooms and serving delicious meals using fantastic local produce in the original timber-panelled refectory. In summer, meals are enjoyed outside under the trees while in winter you can cosy up to a log fire in the old Library. This is a place where God speaks. If asked to describe Palazzola in one word, most people would say: stunning! Your shoulders start to relax within hours of arrival as its tranquil calm weaves its spell. Soon the only thing you’ll want to rush to is lunch. Palazzola is not a five-star hotel. It’s much more than that. Comfortable, friendly, welcoming, with history all around you from the remains of an imperial Roman villa to the murals in the refectory left by occupying German troops. In summer, Palazzola particularly welcomes families and parish groups. You can visit Rome and explore the delightful Castelli towns nearby. Take a stroll around the lake to Castel Gandolfo or simply spend your days lying in the sun beside the magnificent outdoor swimming pool, carved out of rock at the end of the garden. At other times of year we welcome groups of students, religious orders, retreat groups or those seeking a few days of peace and quiet to recharge their batteries, refocus their life or just relax. Palazzola is perfect for a conference, a family gathering or a wedding. It offers something for everyone. CASA DI LIVIA SUL PALATINO

Si tratta di una ricca domus privata di I secolo a. C., rimessa in luce da scavi ottocenteschi, attribuita a Livia in base al nome Iulia Augusta inciso su una tubatura di piombo esposta nel tablino (sala di ricevimento).
La casa viene considerata, all’interno del complesso augusteo, un appartamento riservato alla moglie di Augusto. Si compone di un atrio quadrangolare su cui si aprono quattro locali pavimentati in mosaico e con le pareti dipinte databili intorno al 30 a.C.: tra le testimonianze più importanti del II Stile a Roma nella sua fase più matura. Sul fondo si trovano al centro il tablino, e, simmetricamente, due stanze (alae). A destra dell’atrio è situato il triclinium (sala da pranzo).
Con l’intervento multimediale il visitatore è accolto nella semioscurità, poiché gli ambienti si illuminano a rotazione per facilitarne la lettura: dall’atrio al tablino, per finire con il triclinio. Una voce narrante, cui si abbina il lightmapping, rivela le storie mitologiche raffigurate e sottolinea gli schemi pittorici degli affreschi.
Sono così fornite le chiavi di lettura per apprezzare la straordinaria bellezza delle pareti decorate, e scoprire che le immagini dipinte rispondevano a un preciso programma voluto da Augusto.
Il tablino è detto anche “sala di Polifemo” perché sulla parete di fondo è raffigurato il ciclope Polifemo che insegue la ninfa Galatea. Sulla parete di destra, al centro, è dipinta Io rivolta verso Argo, il gigante dai cento occhi che la tiene prigioniera, mentre Mercurio arriva per liberarla.
Nell’ala destra la decorazione è organizzata intorno a un portico aggettante: tra le colonne, festoni vegetali ornati con bende e oggetti del culto a Dioniso. Sopra, corre un fregio paesaggistico monocromo su fondo giallo, molto raro nel suo genere, con scene di vita reale e scene rituali di ambiente egizio.
L’ala sinistra raffigura figure fantastiche (grifi, Vittorie alate), affrontate araldicamente ai lati di candelabri e posate sui rami dell’albero della vita.
Il triclinio conserva una straordinaria decorazione pittorica su fondo rosso cinabro, più noto come rosso pompeiano, su cui si aprono edicole che svelano paesaggi sacri e campestri con effetti di profondità spaziale.

Lo sapevi che...⁉️

🏰 Adagiata su uno sperone di peperino, Marino è stato un fiorente insediamento romano e, successivamente, un importante possedimento della nobile famiglia dei Colonna, la quale vi eresse il Palazzo omonimo e la Basilica di San Barnaba.
🍇 Oggi, è famosa soprattutto per il suo splendido centro storico, per il paesaggio che lo circonda e per il pregiato vino bianco, celebrato ogni anno a ottobre con la celebre Sagra dell’Uva.
🍷 Si possono visitare nei sotterranei del borgo le gallerie scavate a mano nel peperino, inizialmente utilizzate per conservare il vino e successivamente sfruttate come ricoveri durante i bombardamenti degli anni Quaranta.

🚃 Nel 1856 Frascati fu la prima città dell’allora Stato Pontificio ad essere servita di una ferrovia. La ferrovia veniva chiamata dal popolo “il treno della sbornia”, perché riportava la domenica sera a Roma i visitatori delle taverne e delle fraschette.
