Migianella dei Marchesi The once abandoned, recently restored village and castle of Migianella dei Marchesi is located rough

The once abandoned, recently restored village and castle of Migianella dei Marchesi is located roughly 4 km West of Umbertide, Umbria. The name Marchesi suggests the castle was originally the property of the aristocratic Marchesi family who controlled much of the land and castles in this area. Until the 1600's, most people in this area lived in fortified settlements because isolated farmsteads wer

e vulnerable to attack. Migianella castle guarded a route to Umbertide and the monastery of Monte Corona. The castle is thought to have been here since around 1000 AD although most castles in the Niccone Valley are built on the site of earlier fortifications. The first recorded use of cannon in Italy took place here in 1331.
