Many say the wine aisle is overwhelming and the jargon confusing. They want clarity and context, like simple descriptors, creative wine lists, and engaging events. 🥂
Seems like it's time to make wine more approachable, to simplify and spice things up for retailers and restaurants.

🦋 In a world increasingly focused on health, wellness, and mindful consumption, Italian drinking culture offers a unique approach. As Lia Tolaini-Banville, owner of Banville Wine Merchants, explains, wine in Italy is almost always paired with food, enjoyed during meals to complement flavors —steering clear of overdrinking.

We spoke with Tolaini-Banville at the Wine Business Forum organized by ITA – Italian Trade Agency during Vinitaly USA, where she highlighted the importance of sharing this Italian approach to drinking culture with the world. 🇮🇹🍷

Last day here on Etna! Day 5 on the slopes of the volcano was pretty engaging and intense! 🙌🏻
Since our Amdassadors have been eating and drinking delicious wine and food for the last 4 days, we started day 5 hiking in the vineyards of Sciara with Emanuele. Much needed! Then, the group headed to the winery for a visit and tasting of their different labels. 😎
After a nice aperitivo, we stopped at Tornatore to enjoy some of its wines during an informative technical tasting and some of them at lunch - hospitality was fabulous! 🥂
We couldn’t end up the day in a better way than visiting Planeta, its vineyards in Sciara Nuova and the winery close by.
Icing on the cake, was mr. Alessio Planeta joining the group at dinner, hosted at his estate up on Etna. 🍷
Thank you so very much, grazie a tutti for the great time spent together! 🤍

The wide variety of 🇮🇹 Italian terroirs, grape varieties, and wines is a double-edged sword for the U.S. market, according to Robert Tobiassen, President of the National Association of Beverage Importers (NABI), that we interviewed during the Wine Business Forum hosted by ITA - Italian Trade Agency in Chicago.

💡 On one hand, this diversity excites U.S. consumers who are always looking for something new and exciting. On the other hand, Italian companies need to find ways to communicate this variety and stand out from the crowd.

In a room full of Italian bottles, how does your brand stand out?

Day 4 on Etna was all about discovering how different parcels can express such distinctive personalities - first our Ambassadors had a taste of Pietradolce, sneaking around the vineyards and tasting what they call their cru and theri grand crus. 😍
Then, after lunch, they experienced Donnafugata’s Etna interpretation, enjoying different shades of local volcanic wines - rosato, bianco and red, then moving to exotic Pantelleria island with Ben Rye Passito. 🫶🏼
The day ended up at I Custodi delle Vigne dell’Etna, where they experienced different vintages of Etna Bianco and Rosso, unvelining the ageing potential of these volcanic wines. 😎
Seems like on Etna you get elegance on one hand, and power on the other. 😉
Etna is literally like a lady. 🤍

🇺🇸 🇮🇹 During the Wine Business Forum “Between Tradition and Innovation: The Future of Italian Wine on the American Market” organised by ITA - Italian Trade Agency during Vinitaly.USA, President Matteo Zoppas shared his expectations about Vinitaly.USA and the Forum, highlighting the desire of ITA - Italian Trade Agency of creating a boutique event in Chicago that brings together producers, buyers, importers, distributors, hotel and restaurant chains, giving them the opportunity to come together and, more importantly, do business together to promote Italian wine worldwide. 💼

Day 3 on Etna was a treat! 😍
Our Ambassadors started the day visiting Cottanera winery, having a wine tasting in the shade of the volcano Signora Etna. Francesco Cambria, President of the Consortium and owner of the winery, introduced the Ambassador to Etna - did you know that here 60% of the wines produced are reds and 40% whites? 🤓
Then, we moved to Palmento Costanzo located in Contrada Santo Spirito where our Ambassadors had such a warm welcome by Valeria and Serena, mother and daughter, who are leading the winery in this windy Contrada. As Deena IWA said, we had a “Masterclass of pleasure” here! Tasting and lunch with a view. 🌋
Next stop was Salvo Foti - I Vigneri. No need to say that Simone Foti was cornered in his vineyards by VIA Ambassadors who were so curious to know pretty much EVERYTHING! 🍇
To cite Salvo Foti, “We can’t buy time!” So we rushed to the last winery on the list for today - Murgo! What a sparkling night we had, starting with the traditional method, enjoying Etna Bianco, ending up with Etna Rosso and Pinot Noir!
What a joy! 🍾

Our Ambassadors started the day visiting Cottanera winery, having a wine tasting in the shade of the volcano Signora Etna. “Wines marked by characteristics of the present period” was the engaging tasting session led by Pietro Russo MW that kicked off day 2 masterclasses powered by Cronache di Gusto, focusing on the new winemaking approach that influence the current style overviewing the evolution from the Parker effect to a more modern sip. 🍷
After a fascinating flight of reds, we virtually moved to Franciacorta - are you familiar with Erbamat? Did you know, that lately more and more winemakers often choose carry on the 1st fermentation in oak barrels? 🥂
After the lunch break, we had taste of the wines that represent the renewal of Burgundy, guided by the journalist of Le Figaro Alicia Dorey. That was fascinating! ⚡️
Then, a challenge sparked the afternoon - Etna vs Valdarno (Tuscany). What a vertical tasting of both terroir interpretations of Etna and Valdarno by Famiglia Moretti Cuseri, that owns 5 estates between Tuscany and Sicily. Your favorite..? 🤔
We ended up the second day of masterclasses with an intriguing (again) vertical tasting by Palmento Costanzo, that arouse the curiosity about their wines! It’s been like a preview of tomorrow’s winery visit! 😉

Our VIA Gita on Etna started last nigth, visiting Generazione Alessandro winery and tasting its wines paired with some delicious courses for dinner, cooked with only local ingredients like the cavolo trunzo, Porcini mushrooms and suckling pig from the Nebrodi mountains. 🌋🤍🥂
Then, the first set of masterclasses organized today by Cronache di Gusto at Villa Neri (Linguaglossa), was a blast! 🤩
It started with a deep dive into Etna 2014, both white and red - “Time is a gentleman”, to cite the pioneer of Etna, Salvo Foti, who’s making human wines on the slopes of the volcano. 🍇
Then, the focus was on Calabria unveiling the new original wine trends of the producer Giovanni Benvenuto. 😎
After a light lunch at the Villa, our IWAs had the pleasure to take part into an exclusive vertical tasting of Palari, a blend whose backbone is Nerello Mascalese from Messina, debunking the myth of the use of new barriques. 😲
The afternoon continued with a deep dive into Chianti wine regions, session led by James Button from Decanter magazine - pure Sangiovese pleasure! 🍷
Last but not least, the focus moved to Neri family wines in a masterclass conducted by Santo Neri & Pietro Russo MW. 🫶🏼
To end up the day, what a better way than enjoying dinner with some wine producers?

Vinitaly International Academy has certified 15 new Italian Wine Ambassadors and 1 Italian Wine Expert! 🇮🇹🍷
The prestigious titles were awarded after an intense three-day course held in Chicago 🇺🇸 October 19 to 21, 2024, that included 2 days of tastings and concluded with a rigorous four-part exam on the third and final day 📚

Those who passed the exam now join an international network of Italian Wine Ambassadors & Experts, responsible for promoting Italian wine across the globe. 🍾

After three days of hard work Vinitaly International Academy Course in Chicago 🇺🇸 came to end!
Students participated for 3 days, tasting 45 Italian wines and taking the difficult 2.5 hour exam.
The result? 17 candidates passed! 🍾
16 were appointed newly certified Italian Wine Ambassadors (IWA), and 1 achieved the prestigious title of Italian Wine Expert (IWE). 🥂🧡

🤩 Our VIA Community keeps growing, counting now over 1400 candidates, of whom 409 have now achieved the title Italian Wine Ambassador and 17 of those are qualified as Italian Wine Experts.

Thank you to all the students for your hard work, and to VIA Faculty member Sarah Heller MW for leading these incredible two days of classes. 🤩

📆 Remember: the next edition of VIA will be in Almaty, Kazakhstan, November 16-18! 📆
