Many Vestax products are designed to be repairable and usable.

We are grateful to the DJs who still use them today.

It has been nearly 50 years since hip-hop first burst onto the music scene. Breaking, one of the four elements that are considered to be the pillars of hip-hop, has finally been added to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 programme as a new sport.

In light of this historical milestone, we would like to look back on the birth of hip-hop culture and the history of Technics direct drive turntables, which have been an integral part of this culture.

Hip-hop culture was born in the Bronx borough of New York City in the early 1970s. In those days, young people flocked to so-called block parties held in parks and other places, where DJs played music, MCs got partygoers pumped up, people danced, and walls were spraypainted with graffiti art. This was what hip-hop was all about.

One of the key figures behind the development of this music culture was DJ Kool Herc, known as the father of hip-hop. His cherished turntable was the Technics SL-1100.

DJ Kool Herc, who loved funk and rock music, noticed that his favourite songs contained an interlude called a “break,” and that the audience’s excitement increased when the record reached this part. Using two turntables, he invented “breakbeats,” in which the same part of the track is played on repeat. This became the basis for hip-hop music, and led to the development of performance techniques such as breaking and rapping.

Unlike conventional belt-drive systems, Technics direct drive turntables provided outstanding rotational precision and stability that made it easy to play breakbeats, a factor which supported the development of hip-hop culture.

I shall never forget that day back in 1978, when working in a small record shop owed by Joe Williams, the then manager of my first contracted band Light Of The World.
The City Sounds van pulled up outside and I ran out in anticipation of the imported albums on board.
The guy delivering the goods handed me a stack of albums then placed one on top… “Bobby Caldwell” he said… “Track 2 on the B side”!
I placed the record on the turntable, selected the suggested cut and lowered the needle… "What You Won't Do For Love” 4 minutes and 45 seconds of pure magic embedded itself into my heart and soul and has remained there ever since!
Rest In Peace Bobby!
