An eclectic mix of ages at this 12 year old’s birthday party, but I made sure everyone in the audience was entertained - even the adults!

On my way home after the last of three magic shows this weekend.

Show #1 was through an agent I had never worked with before, and I ended up at a private party in the most opulent house I’ve ever worked in. I’ve never even heard of a house in Tokyo having an indoor pool, but I was hired for a pool party. I’m not sure who I was performing for, but the kids had their own driver and bodyguard.

Show #2 was way out in Chiba city… A dreaded 12 year old birthday party, but it ended up being a ton of fun and I scored a 30,000 yen tip.

Show #3 was in Toranomon Hills, with a new client who found me online. A couple of kids started shouting out my magic words before I even introduced them, so I asked how many people there had seen me perform before. Half a dozen kids (and almost as many adults) raised their hands. That felt nice.

So that’s a wrap on the weekend… and that’s glitter on my arm.

On my way home after my second birthday show this weekend. I’ve just surpassed the total number of birthday shows I did for all of 2023, so this is shaping up to be a big year.

I used to worry about being considered a kidshow magician, but since Covid I’ve kinda come to embrace the label.

Cherry blossom season here in Tokyo and The Amazing Fraser celebrated with back to back birthday parties yesterday.

The second show was the dreaded toddler birthday party in which adults outnumber the kids (i.e. this is a party for the parents and we hired you to babysit our kids). This kind of show was a real challenge for me years ago but I’ve learned how to engage (i.e. shut-up) the adults early on, giving everyone at the party an enjoyable show

First show was for the often challenging 8-9 y.o. all-boy crowd, but The Amazing Fraser had them eating out of his hand the whole time.

Being a gaijin magician in Tokyo is always a load of fun in December. G to he past week’s eclectic list of venues included everything from a large theater to an intimate beachside living room; occasions varying from a 5 year old’s birthday party to a famous French cosmetics brand’s year end party. Photos are from this week’s kid shows. Off to Osaka next weekend for a couple of Christmas shows. 🙂
