Moods are evocative. Mood drives creativity more than any other ingredient, whether it's a shattered heart, a rainy day, or the awkwardness of a first junior high infatuation. We typically write in business mode, removing emotion. When we feel, we employ words, rhythms, and melodies our analytical brain won't allow. Giving them full freedom makes us vulnerable and believable.
Some authors only write when devastated. If you want to be productive, that's depressing. Empathy for others' feelings and difficulties might help us convey mood in songs. Every lady has dated a jerk; every man longs for a female he can't approach. Every person has felt the emptiness of winter loneliness. Wrap your heart in a past, present, or vicarious feeling before writing a song. It's noticeable.
