TITLE: SPEAKING in LANDSCAPE
middle-ground practice toward landscape as a common language

In development-oriented urban practices, have we, as landscape architects, communicated with practitioners in other fields through our own language? Today, fascination with nature is in fashion in architecture, urbanism, art, and popular culture. This trend is creating opportunities for landscapes to become a meta language that encompasses contemporary design and cultural disciplines beyond being simply elements. Nevertheless, the fragmented phenomenon of green preference can be dangerous if we do not share ideas about how landscapes and ecosystems operate. The weak must learn and appropriate the language of the strong in order to be part of a major system. The weak, however, should not forget their own language and continue to (re)produce field-specific meanings and heighten the beauty of their own language until the rest of the world begins to hear them speak. I will discuss my latest landscape art installations and landscape design projects that are intended to convey the value and vision of landscape practices to the public. Four operational concepts, namely, archiving time, respecting ground, celebrating everyday, and creating heritage, are presented to spatialize the core values of landscape architecture. Landscape can serve as a common language that permeates our lives and urban practices. It should be a meta language when we design a sustainable and healthy future.

TITLE: Urban Parks in an Uneasy Century: Olmsted and Beyond

In the wake of the pandemic, racial injustice, and the effects of climate change, the relationship between parks and our social, political, and environmental systems is driving how urban green space is being planned, designed, and programmed in the U.S.
City park systems are increasingly recognized for their potential
as a public health tool, a forum for civic activity, and as resilient infrastructure.
But these ideas are not new. Frederick Law Olmsted believed that parks provided spiritual and physical refreshment, were places where people from all walks of life could come together on common ground, and that they had a role in providing clean air and water to improve urban conditions.
As we celebrate Olmsted’s 200th birthday, how can landscape architects advance his principles and values through urban park design that responds to complex and sometimes conflicting needs
--and as advocates for change?

[IFLA 2022] Special Session 02

Organizer: Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA)

Overview
ㅇ Event: The 58th IFLA World Congress Cultural Heritage Administration(CHA) Special Session
ㅇ Topic: Re:thinking - Protection and Management for the Historic Gardens
ㅇ Date & Time: Thursday, September 1, 2022, 14:00-17:00 (KST)
ㅇ Venue: Kimdaejung Convention Center, Gwangju, Korea

Background
Traditional landscape architecture, especially historic gardens, provides significant evidence of how human civilizations have responded to nature. Unlike buildings, gardens have vitality; they are constantly changing and must respond with flexibility according to the interactions with human beings. Therefore, the restoration of historic gardens placed at the intersection of culture and nature needs to be discussed on an international level, focusing on the conservation of inherent diversity, such as cultural differences and natural environments, rather than just using the pre-defined standard and global guidelines.
In this special session of the IFLA World Congress, we would like to share operational methods and various opinions and discussions for protecting and managing historic gardens. By presenting a series of examples and outlining the conservation solutions used for each other, we can collaboratively discuss common concerns with the preservation efforts mentioned above and whether there are any limitations to the “Florence Charter: Historic Gardens.” In addition, we plan to explore the extent to which interventions for historic garden conservation can be applied in the context of climate change and sustainability.

◇ Event Summary
Our world is ever-changing. Think of COVID-19, which transformed our cities in ways that were unfathomable prior to 2020. We believe that IFLA Gwangju 2022 can be a networking opportunity for global MZ urban/landscape researchers to come together and discuss what will be needed for the future urban environment, where we will grow, age, and eventually retire. What will be considered indispensable? How will our cities change? What will not change?

TITLE: The Carbon Landscape

We have a problem not easily addressed; the carbon reality is that most urban spaces, public realm, and urban parks, come with a significant carbon debt that is unsustainable to offset or mitigate.
This means most of our current urban design projects including green infrastructure projects have a carbon footprint that not only is almost impossible to offset but has increased over the last two decades, in some cases fivefold. We are currently going the wrong direction from a climate change perspective.
It is important that we continue to integrate sustainable design practices into our urban design approaches, but we must change our approach to urban design standards and risk management if we are to address this embodied carbon footprint in our work. We must incorporate honest and robust carbon calculations as part of our urban design process. The Carbon Landscape presentation will highlight the issues and talk about the carbon reality of what we do and how we might approach finding solutions.

TITLE: Re:vitalising landscape architecture as a design practice

Writing in 2020, the late Japanese landscape architect Fumiaki Takano commented on the homogenisation of design that has accompanied the growth of landscape architecture as a profession. Gone is the cultural uniqueness of practice with Takano observing that many young designers in Asia are growing up with the ‘scent’ of a Western style landscape. Drawing on our experience conceptualising The Big Asian Book of Landscape Architecture through framings of ‘inter-referencing’ and ‘Asia as method’ this talk addresses some of Takano’s concerns and reflects on how this understanding can inform a new generation of practitioners beyond Asia.

We will argue for the grounding of design practice within specific cultural contexts as a means for revitalising design practice. Importantly, the ‘inter referencing’ of design practice within similar cultural contexts, escapes the generalisations inherent in nationalism and globalisation to reveal specific processes, theories, and philosophies influential in design. Through this comparative contextualisation, an appreciation of landscape architecture’s diversity of practice is revealed, along with a greater sense of the agency of design. With mounting global pessimism weighing heavily on a new generation of landscape architects, we hope our talk will positively demonstrate the continuing value of design as a cultural practice which can make a difference.

TITLE: How Thinking Like a Landscape Architect Can Help Save the World?

We all, both experts and laymen, in some ways and on different levels, try to face the ongoing climatic challenges, ranging from trash recycling to carbon capture. What is a “landscape architectural way” of contributing to this goal? As part of a profession that is strong at multi-scalar thinking and collaborative practice with other experts, I believe landscape architects can take a leading role in devising more profound and holistic strategies by using their expertise in reading geomorphology in planar and sectional dimensions. This talk is to share what the speaker has been pursuing through the design practice, as well as through teaching and research to make real-world solutions to this global crisis as a landscape architect.
