Swan Lake (Russian: Лебединое озеро, Lebedinoye ozero) ballet, opus. 20, by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, was composed 1875–1876. The scenario, initially in four acts, was fashioned from Russian folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger.
The ballet was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet on March 4, 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, billed as The Lake of the Swans.
Although it is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on the 1895 revival of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, first staged for the Imperial Ballet on January 15, 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. For this revival, Tchaikovsky's score was revised by the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre's chief conductor and composer Riccardo Drigo.

"All Four Lead dancers rose to the occasion as Odette, Odile, Prince Siegfried, and Von Rathbart and captured the hidden depths of their characters.
They were all beautifully matched by the Corps De Ballet, who recreated all those well-known vignettes with great panache and style.
However, the most enchanting moments were not on stage, but beside me, as two small toddlers, appropriately attired in fairy costumes, waltzed down the aisle to be a little closer to the magic on stage. Their eyes transfixed on the artists, their dancing revealed complete enthrallment and it became undeniable that this production of Swan Lake was continuing to cast its magic over audiences of all ages."
