💡Parents Tip Sheet: How to talk to your child about the protests?👨👩👧👦
Children Age 2-6👶🏻
At home watching the news:
-Answer when asked
-Be honest, clear and reassuring
-Use simple language to explain the situation for example: “People are upset and they want to say it out loud. Like when you get angry when your sister plays with your toys and come to me to complain”
-This is called protesting: It’s when a lot of people are upset with the same things and they get together in the streets to complain.
-Some people are very angry that they start yelling, cursing, and breaking things. Remember when you were so angry you broke your iPad?
-The guys in uniform, the police and army, are there to keep everything safe for everybody. They may also get angry sometimes.
-Discuss how it makes you feel and ask about the child’s feelings when watching together: “sometimes I feel so happy that everybody is coming together to complain but I get scared when I see angry people”
In the protest:
-Explain the same as above before going:
“we are going as a family because we are also upset with many things and we want others to know it. There, you will see a lot of people, some of them will be angry and yelling, and others will be dancing and singing with loud music. We will be together all the time. If you get tired or upset or scared you can tell us so we can help you or leave immediately.”
-If they witness any violence: “These people are very angry and they are doing bad things. They won’t hurt us but it’s better to stay away from them to stay safe. I am here with you and I will keep you safe”
Children age 6-10🧒🏻👦🏼
At home watching the news:
-Using the same principles as above you can be more elaborate in the explanation: “People in Lebanon are angry at the people ruling the country because they are stealing money and doing bad things. They want them to leave and be punished so they are going to protest i
