"Happy violinist in a floral dress" – Acrylic Painting on Canvas, 60 x 90 cm (24 x 35 inches), Atis Luguzs (2021).

As I look at the photograph, holding a brush in my hand, I am overwhelmed by memories of a significant chapter in her life. The atmosphere of my studio is subtly infused with the memories from the end of 2012 – a time when she was not only a captivating actress but also a bride-to-be, engaged to musician James Righton. Her portrayal had just debuted on the big screen in the romantic costume drama of the late 19th century, "Anna Karenina," and her glowing face adorned the year-end covers of fashion magazines like VOGUE, FLARE, and ALLURE. Her image was a muse and a coveted trophy for many.

Mixing the colors, I am conscious of the significance of this moment. I begin with the background, in shades of pink and burgundy, carefully blending them on my palette before they meet the canvas, setting the stage for a moment of fun and joy in her life. I want the background to convey the vibrancy of her life at that time.

With every brush stroke, I recreate the contours of her face, the slope of her cheeks, and the light in her eyes. There's a harmony in her smile, a melody that seems to play through her expression of joyful surprise. As I paint, I smile back involuntarily; her happiness is infectious, even if it's just an image on canvas.

Her dress is a challenge to my patience, and I relish it. Each flower is like a note in the symphony of colors I must depict. It's a visual representation of the most vibrant stages of her life – in both a personal and professional sense. As my brush glides over the fabric of her dress, I remember the celebratory and commendable moments that adorned her life.

The violin in her hands is an element in the painting where my brush tarries with meticulous passion. It was an unusual accessory for her - a symbol of that playful evening on the NBC talk show "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" at Rockefeller Center in New York. Her fame at the time could afford this whimsical play with musical instruments without prior skills. I paint the violin with particular care, making sure it looks as natural in her hands as it did that evening.

Throughout this process, I am filled with a profound sense of connection. I am not just painting a woman; I am painting a story woven through time. The image reflects a blend of art and memory, connecting the past with the present.

The smile on her face is not just a reaction to the music she pretends to play but also a reflection of the inner joy of an artist at a moment of fulfillment in her life. My emotions – excitement, admiration, joy, and a nostalgic longing for the past – surge and flow with the memories that each aspect of the portrait evokes.

As the portrait nears completion, I step back to observe the story I've translated onto canvas. I hope those who view this portrait will feel the joy I felt in creating it, that they will see beyond the colors and shapes to the life and soul sheltered behind the smile and expressive eyes. It is my silent dialogue with the viewer, an invitation to recall the moment when the world paused to watch her play the violin with a smile as heartfelt as it was captivating.

PORTRAIT OF A SPANISH SCREEN MUSE

As I stand before the easel, brush in hand, the visage of a Spanish screen muse takes form against the backdrop of my canvas—a tribute to a career that has both inspired and challenged me as an artist. With each stroke, I feel a connection to her journey, one that has been lauded from the classrooms of “El Internado” (The Boarding School) to the tumultuous seas of “El Barco” (The Boat) and through the revolutionary era of Spanish Netflix series’“Las chicas del cable” (Cable Girls) to the thrilling pursuits of “Jaguar.”

Her roles, vibrant as the fuchsia that adorns her in this portrait, have been a dance of light and shadow, much like the play of hues that I layer upon her image. Working with maestros like Pedro Almodóvar in “La piel que habito” (The Skin I Live In) and “Los Amantes Pasajeros” (I’m So Excited!), she has brought to life characters that linger long after the credits roll, earning her a rightful Goya nomination and the Trophée Chopard at the Cannes Film Festival (2013) — an honor I’ve sought to encapsulate in the quiet strength of her gaze. Each role has added a layer to her essence, which I now translate into color and form.

As a model for Intimissimi and a writer for Vogue España, her versatility extends beyond acting, reflecting the multifaceted woman she is—an aspect I imbue within the subtle brushstrokes that define her cheekbones, or the soft contours that shape her lips.

The emotions that viewers may find in this portrait are as varied as her accolades. Some will see the determination of a woman who has carved her path through the arts. Others may feel the allure of a muse who has captured the gaze of countless onlookers, being named the Most Searched Performer and the best dressed at the 26th Goya Awards. And perhaps they will sense the pride of a Woman of the Year (Spanish GQ, 2012), an inspiration that drives me to imbue this canvas with her spirit.

This portrait, “Portrait of a Spanish Screen Muse,” is my ode to her—a woman who has graced the silver screen with her talent and the world with her elegance, a figure who has shaped my artistic journey as surely as she has her own. It is a depiction not just of a person, but of a narrative that continues to unfold, inviting each viewer to partake in its telling.

Recognized for her beauty and allure, she has graced the covers of numerous international magazines and has been celebrated for enhancing the perception of women in the media.

This portrait is an attempt to encapsulate the multifaceted nature of her persona. From being celebrated as one of the world's most beautiful people to her portrayal of Frida Kahlo in "Frida," which earned her critical acclaim and numerous nominations, her journey is one of evolution and empowerment. Her role as Frida was not just a performance but a testament to her ability to embody and project the spirit of one of history's most compelling female figures.

In this portrait, I endeavored to capture more than her physical likeness; I aimed to encapsulate the essence of her charismatic and multifaceted persona. The painting reflects not just the physical attributes that made her a renowned s*x symbol and a fixture on lists like People's most beautiful and Maxim's Hot 100, but also the depth and complexity beneath her public image.

The painting process became a journey into the intricate layers of her character. Fans of her work will recognize the strength, elegance, and depth that she brings to her roles, echoed in the painting. Her portrayal as the Aztec goddess Itzpapalotl in the "Solamente Salma" exhibition and her numerous accolades, including the Women in Film Lucy Award, testify to her impact on the industry.

Līdz 20. aprīlim Ozolnieku Tautas Namā būs apskatāma gleznu izstāde "Sievietes skatiena valdzinājums". Būs redzama lielākā daļa no manis gleznotajiem portretiem. Katrā ir ielikts kāds gabaliņš mīlestības. Izstāde ir aplūkojama darba dienās no 9:00 līdz 20:00.

Until April 20, "Ozolnieku tautas nams" will have a painting exhibition, "The fascination of a woman's gaze." Most of the portraits I have painted will be on display. Find a bit of love in each one. The exhibition can be viewed on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
