Our families have known each other for a long time, but we had never actually met. He returned to Nigeria in 2017, following the completion of his studies and people kept saying how we’d make such a great couple but I wasn’t having any of that (I get coconut head). He was a bit reluctant to call me as well but eventually caved in (Thank you, sweet Jesus). I remember the evening he called and I heard his voice. I can’t fully explain it, but there was something about it that drew me in. He sounded calm, confident, sexy and so warm. I wanted to know more about him but unfortunately, about 5 minutes into our conversation, my phone battery went off. There was no power to charge it and my generator refused to start (Village people 1: Me 0 😩).

How we met
By the groom, Ase:

So this chance encounter turned love story had its conception in Zenith Bank. Both Mums started their professional careers at the bank and would bring us both to work occasionally. Ada, “I want to speak to my mummy,” and Ase, “Mr always up to something.” We started as playmates, but with age comes distance. As you can see, this story is just getting started.

We were at a mutual friend’s pool party on November 24th, 2018. He saw a beautiful damsel from across the yard just as he was about leaving so he asked the mutual to come get my number for him. She actually came up to me to get my phone number for him and also “sell his market” but I was really uninterested in meeting anyone new because I was going to leave the country for my master’s programme in a month and I didn’t want to start anything lol. However, after a little persuasion from her, I gave in and said she could give him my number but that I wasn’t promising I’d actually follow up with a date. Fast forward to about 15 mins later, some guy approached me to “talk” to me and he told me how he had asked our mutual to get my phone number for him because he was about to leave. He mentioned that he was not sure if she’d actually do it, so he walked up to me himself to get the number because he couldn’t leave without it.

Alex and I met in March 2020 during the beginning stages of the Covid pandemic. Our first date was a wild night. We started at an Italian restaurant, but neither of us wanted the night to end, so we drove to another town for ice cream, and a ‘speak easy’. Still not wanting the night to end, we drove to a beer garden and stayed until they shut the lights out. Unfortunately, Massachusetts declared a complete shutdown right after our first date, but that didn't stop us from exploring our love. Alex got creative for our second date and turned himself into a master chef, and made the best pasta carbonara I have ever had. Maybe that's really when I fell in love. Fast forward to a few months, meals and conversations and we were falling in love, travelling the world, meeting each other’s families and mutually supporting each other in our careers. On July 2nd 2022, he took my little nieces and me to a beach in Newport, Rhode Island, went down on one knee and said something like this ‘…Benedicta we complement and support each other so well- in love, in business, in spirituality- and I’d love to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?’ ‘YES!…YES...Yes of course’ I said (jumping around and screaming in excitement) I said YES to the man who lights up my world!

During my senior year of college in the U.S. at Brown University in Providence, I met Rekha through a mutual friend who had brought her to a get-together before a concert. From the moment we locked eyes, I knew I felt something shift, even though I couldn't quite figure out what it was. After spending most of the evening chatting away, we went on our first date a couple of weeks later after which I recall telling his housemates that we would get married one day. We soon discovered we shared a passion for the arts, as I was actively pursuing a music career and Rekha was in the process of founding the arts program at the school where she taught. I moved to New York in 2016 to attend Columbia Law School, and we would travel 4 hours back and forth to spend the weekends together. After several Christmases spent with the Akinkugbe in Lagos, Nigeria, we reunited when Rekha moved to New York in 2019 for graduate school at the New School. Shortly after becoming a full-time attorney in 2020, My priority was buying Rekha an engagement ring before asking for her hand in marriage. Friends and family travelled from all over the world to attend our wedding at Art Factory Studios in New Jersey, a location symbolic of our relationship. We walked into our wedding reception to my song “Nobody Like You,” which I wrote for Rekha and which was inspired by my grandparents' 60+ years of marriage.

In December 2018, I showed up to a fun night out to celebrate a friend’s proposal at a local club in Dallas. I showed up to the section with the future bride and my girls, and Dapo showed up with his boys, as he is friends with the future groom. The entire night I was with my friends dancing and enjoying the celebration, I remember seeing Dapo and the other single guys going from girl to girl and I coined them “Awon boys” just jumping from pillar to post. After the outing, we all decided to keep the night going and we ended up at another location. It was at that location that Dapo finally took a second to calm down and he noticed me.

I met Dipo 10 years ago at the university through a mutual friend. We met in front of the BBS building and I was putting on a black and pink jalamia while he wore a cream jalamia. We immediately clicked (as friends) and that’s all I saw him as I had no idea he wanted more. He would help me through my various heartbreaks and be always there for me in every way. I never thought much about it because he’s generally a very caring person, so I thought I was getting the regular friendship treatment. Fast forward, 8 years later (2021), I had sworn off men and decided to focus on other things. He decided to tell me that he had been in love with me from the very first night we met and then so many things he did for me in the past started to make sense to me. It finally clicked.

Ini and I met in church shortly after he moved to the states. It was easy to notice him because he was tall, good-looking, and always so nicely dressed. Of course, I pretended not to notice him and even when my friends in church talked about him, I always brushed the conversation aside (lol). A few months later, I was walking to the library in school when I came across a familiar face - it was Ini. I remember thinking in my head “he’s here too.” I guess our paths were truly destined to cross. We started talking and eventually became close that we would talk every day. At church, we were just cordial because we had to code for the uncles and aunties. Fast forward to a few months of us talking every day, and I started to realize how sweet he was. We would be on the phone for hours talking and laughing and I felt like I could truly be myself with him. One afternoon he asked me to meet him in a restaurant to talk. I can remember being so nervous my stomach felt like it had butterflies. That day he asked me to be his girlfriend and the rest they say is history. He has been a rock, my biggest cheerleader and supporter through so many life journeys. He is my best friend and I cannot wait to finally become his wife.

I was a chorister and noticed him for the first time in Church with his very crazy dance moves. I knew he was new to the Church and our eyes always connected randomly. He walked up to me for the first time and tried to get my contact but I refused and then he dropped his business card for me to call. After a while, I stopped seeing him in church, and then he resurfaced and asked why I never called. We became friends when he found me on IG and started dating months after. Our mothers automatically became friends and it was a go from then!

I was invited to a wedding in 2022 as a regular guest but 3 days before the wedding , the bride reached out to me to ask if I could be her bridesmaid last minute. The normal me would’ve been upset and probably declined but my spirit asked me to just accept and join in her joy. I was going through a lot that period but decided I’ll go out and have fun because in the midst of my storm I found out that I passed my exams and would be a Chartered Accountant. I attended the wedding with the intentions of dancing my sorrows away and boy! I did just that! I made sure I had a good time and eventually went home. Fast forward 2 weeks later, the bride sent me a message saying, “There’s one of my husbands friends that has been disturbing him to get your number, can I give him your number?” And I replied, “Biko no oo!” Honestly speaking, I didn’t want to hear “pim!” from the male gender.

A Printer was asked to put 1John 4:18 on a Wedding Card, but he made a mistake by not including the "1" before John so he printed John 4:18

1John 4:18 says "There is no fear in love but perfect love cast out all fears"

But John 4:18 says "For You have had five husbands before and even the one you have now is not your husband"
