Talking about bringing more non-sailing brands into the sponsorship of sailing, Bill Sandberg, formerly of Rolex USA, said: “We’re a data driven world, but we’re lacking data. Do you know the average age of your sailors, their income, their interests? People seem scared of speaking to sailors. But I don’t think sailors think sponsors are evil, I think they’d be happy to share some of their details if it means more commercial support for sailing.”

Nigel Beacham from Clipper Sailing says sailing has a great opportunity to appeal to a wider audience at an emotional level. “There are 70 million people out there probably not that interested in the technical side of sailing, but it’s the human element that really engages them. In the Clipper Race we can’t compete with the technical performance in the Americas Cup, but we CAN tell great human stories.”

The final day of the RC44 Valletta Cup brought sun, but the wind never filled in enough to allow the final races to be sailed, despite the 10 boat fleet venturing out on to the water. And so the final event of the year and the resulting RC44 Fleet Racing Championship have once again concluded with impossibly close results.
