🔱 In the late 20th century, Saint James Cavalier underwent significant restoration and transformation as part of Malta’s cultural development. The renovations were completed in 2000.
🔱 Today, it serves as a cultural centre and is one of Malta’s leading venues for the arts. It is officially known as Spazju Kreattiv (Creative Space) and hosts exhibitions, performances, film screenings, and other cultural events.
🔱 The renovation was done with great care to preserve the historical integrity of the building while adapting it for modern use. This blend of old and new architecture makes it a significant example of adaptive reuse in Malta.

𝑺𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑪𝒂𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒓 & 𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝑯𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅

🔱 Saint James Cavalier was constructed between 1566 and 1569 as part of the fortifications of Valletta, the capital city of Malta. It was designed by military engineer Francesco Laparelli and constructed under the supervision of Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar.
🔱 The structure was built as a defensive cavalier, a high platform designed to give the city’s cannons a higher vantage point. It was meant to protect Valletta against potential invaders, particularly from the Ottoman Empire.
🔱 The cavalier is located near the entrance of Valletta, close to the Auberge de Castille, which was the headquarters of the Order of St. John’s Spanish and Portuguese knights.
