21/10/2024

In the vibrant tapestry of the 1970s, disco emerged as more than just a musical genre; it became a powerful movement that catalyzed LGBTQ+ liberation. Rooted in the nightlife of New York City, parties like The Continental Baths, Paradise Garage and a thriving underground drag scene offered a sanctuary for freedom, safety and expression. For the first time, many felt free to celebrate their identities amidst a backdrop of societal repression. The pulsating beats and glittering lights served as a metaphorical escape from the daily struggles of prejudice and discrimination, fostering an environment of acceptance and joy.

The influence of disco was profoundly intertwined with the LGBTQ+ community, drawing from its rich history of Black and Latino musicians, whose contributions helped shape the genre. Artists like Gloria Gaynor and Sylvester created anthems that resonated deeply with the community, infusing their music with themes of resilience and empowerment.

Disco’s impact extended beyond the confines of nightclubs; it became a soundtrack for the burgeoning LGBTQ+ rights movement. The Stonewall Riots of 1969 ignited a fire within the community, inspiring individuals to reclaim their identities and demand equality. This spirit of resistance found expression on the dance floor. United by a desire to celebrate love, freedom, and diversity. The music provided a euphoric backdrop for social change, fostering solidarity among individuals who longed for recognition and respect.

Moreover, disco challenged conventional notions of gender and sexuality, creating space for fluidity and self-expression. The vibrant aesthetics of the disco scene encouraged individuals to break free from traditional gender norms, allowing them to embrace their authentic selves. This radical acceptance laid the groundwork for future generations, inspiring movements that champion LGBTQ+ rights and continue to advocate for inclusivity and understanding.

Today, as we reflect on the legacy of disco, we recognise its profound significance in shaping LGBTQ+ culture and identity. The exuberance of the disco era reminds us of the power of music as a unifying force, capable of transcending barriers and bringing people together. By honouring this history, we not only celebrate the vibrant voices that shaped disco but also reaffirm our commitment to fostering a world where love and acceptance flourish for all. Let us continue to dance in celebration of our identities, embodying the spirit of liberation that disco so beautifully encapsulated. 🌈✨

Gloria Gaynor is an iconic figure not only in disco but in music as a whole. During a time when disco was asserting itself as both a cultural and musical movement, she managed to capture the spirit of resilience and freedom that defined the era. Her journey is deeply linked to personal empowerment, a message she conveyed powerfully through her strong voice and inspiring lyrics.

"I Will Survive" is more than just a hit song—it's a timeless anthem that has transcended decades, a call to perseverance in the face of adversity. Released in 1978, it arrived at a moment when the world, particularly marginalized communities, needed a message of hope and strength. In an era marked by civil rights struggles, the sexual revolution, and the growing visibility of the LGBTQ+ community, this song became a source of inspiration, providing a soundtrack for many personal and social battles.

What makes Gloria Gaynor exceptional is her ability to embody both joy and resilience in her music. Her voice is powerful, but it’s the sincerity and authenticity with which she delivers her songs that have captured the hearts of millions. She managed to blend infectious rhythms with meaningful lyrics, turning a dance floor into a space for catharsis and collective expression. Where other disco hits might have been perceived as superficial, Gloria Gaynor brought an emotional depth that gave disco a universal dimension.

Her journey is also remarkable for the way she defied expectations, especially at a time when the music industry was often dominated by stereotypes about what female singers should be or represent. Gloria Gaynor insisted that her music speak of strength, healing, and independence. This set her apart not just as an artist but as a pioneer who used her platform to convey messages of social importance.

Ultimately, Gloria Gaynor has left a legacy that extends far beyond disco. She captured the spirit of an era while delivering a message of survival that still resonates today. "I Will Survive" remains a beacon for anyone who needs a reminder that, in the face of hardship, they have the power to rise up and move forward—with dignity and strength.

As the music throbbed and lights from the disco ball swirled, she sat back, lit her cigarette and got lost in the moment. Laughter floated in the summer air, the night glowing with neon reflections. She didn’t need to dance—just being there was enough.

24/09/2024

The Paradise Garage, located in New York City, was much more than just a club—it was a sanctuary for the outcasts of society, and a place where the music felt deeply transformative. Emerging in the late 1970s, during a period marked by significant social upheavals and economic downturns, it became a beacon for a new cultural movement that intertwined music, identity, and freedom. For many of its attendees, it was a space where boundaries dissolved, a retreat from the outside world where race, class, and sexuality were transcended in the shared euphoria of the dance floor.

The club’s success was driven by its legendary DJ, Larry Levan, whose innovative approach to sound transformed the musical experience into something almost spiritual. Levan’s sets were a blend of disco, funk, and early electronic sounds, pushing the genre into new territories. His ability to read the room and build emotional journeys through music was unmatched, creating what many have called “Saturday Mass.” It wasn’t just about dancing—it was about release, healing, and community.

People flocked to the Paradise Garage not just for the music but for the sense of belonging. At a time when marginalized communities, especially the LGBTQ+ and Black communities, were fighting for recognition and equality, the club offered a space where they could express themselves freely and without fear of judgment. It was a space that allowed the music to break down societal barriers, providing a raw, unfiltered joy in the act of communal dancing.

In the broader historical context, Paradise Garage was a bridge between the late-era disco explosion and the nascent house and techno scenes. It’s no exaggeration to say that without the Garage, the landscape of modern dance music would be profoundly different. It’s not just a part of New York’s musical history, but a global legacy that continues to inspire club culture today.

16/09/2024

Francis “Frankie” Warren Nicholls, Jr. born January 18, 1955 in the Bronx, Groove City (NYC), was a key figure in the rise of modern dance music.

He grew up with Larry Levan, first as family friends, and then the two became inseparable all the time. From the Bronx, to Greenwich Village, The Loft they were seen on every cool dance floor in the city.

Frankie started to really cut his teeth as a DJ in a basement beneath the Ansonia Hotel, known as the continental baths in 1970s New York. This was essentially gay paradise in a time where being homosexual was against the law. It had over 400 private rooms, a sauna, a swimming pool, a restaurant, public play rooms, a dance floor with Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan controlling the music. Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol and Alfred Hitchcock were frequently visiting.

Parties started on Friday night and ended Monday morning. They operated over an 8 year period with roughly 200 raids from police who would arrest everyone in the place. Steve Ostrow, the owner of the party would then bail all of them out. So they kept coming back to the party.

At the Baths, Knuckles became known for his unique mixes of soul, disco, and R&B, helping to shape the sound of disco that we know today and helped to birth of the movement which quickly spread to mainstream audiences. Both he and Larry Levan used three turntables, which they learned from their mentor Nicky Siano.

At the age of 17, Frankie and Larry took jobs with Nicky Siano, who was opening The Gallery. It was there that they really took their skills to the next level.

In 1977, Knuckles was convinced by Robert Williams to move to Chicago, where he would later become the "Godfather of House Music" by pioneering the genre at The Warehouse and leaving an undeniable mark on music history. When he moved to Chicago there was no scene established for DJs, music was still being selected by Juke Box or people were tuning their radios. He pushed the sound he was playing in NYC but adapted to the local scene with more electronic elements and was importing records from Europe where the cisgender white public hadn’t started a war on disco.

One of the early remixes that Frankie produced that hints at the electronic house elements that were yet to come was First Choice - Let No Man Put Asunder (1983). You can see how this, sped up, is pretty much the music we call house today. The drums especially are like a blueprint for the essence of 90s house music.

Frankie was a master in the studio. Known for his focus and dedication, he released 2 studio albums, a compilation album and twenty-two singles.

🎶 For a deeper dive into his house music selections, edits and originals comment “Love Lives” and we’ll dm you set lists from Frankie in Chicago during the decade that defined was house music was to become (1979-1987).
