This is more than a workshop, it is a speculative and interrogative experience.

63-65: Notes from a Separation is a performance workshop exploring parliamentary, archival and speculative documents on the separation between Singapore and Malaysia 🇲🇾🇸🇬 The experience will encourage contemplation of our shared past, present and future.

⭐⭐On 19 and 20 July at Penang Harmony Centre, engage in participatory activities and dialogue involving parliamentary speeches from Hansard and national archives, props and other relevant materials from 1963 to 1965.

This workshop is led by Fasyali Fadzly, Nabilah Said and Shaifulbahri Mohamad of Singapore-based Bahri & Co. First presented at the Singapore Writers Festival in 2023, the workshop has been expanded into a 3-hour experience.

It has been nearly 60 years since the separation, yet this period continues to arrest imaginations. Talks on declassifying the Albatross files, which document discussions leading up to the separation, remind us how closely intertwined Singapore and Malaysia still are today.

Tucked behind the bungalow lies a secret garden. Inspired by Malaysia’s rural villages, the garden of Penang Harmony Centre features gravel walkways that wind through the space, reminiscent of paths between 'kampung' houses. Lush greenery thrives here, with existing coconut and fruit trees complemented by newly added palms, philodendrons, and ferns.

Modern white benches and classic swings offer comfortable seating, fostering social interaction within larger groups. This serene setting is ideal for events of small to medium sizes and can accommodate around 150 guests suitable for an intimate wedding, birthday celebration and more.

Next to the restored bungalow sits the new event hall. Its A-shaped facade incorporates lattice screens, echoing the architectural style of the original Malay bungalow. This thoughtful design ensures the hall seamlessly blends with the existing structure and the surrounding grounds.

Spanning 2,800 square feet, the versatile hall can accommodate up to 200 guests. It's perfect for a variety of events, from seminars and meetings to music recitals, workshops, and exhibitions.

Situated on busy Scotland Road, the Penang Harmony Centre, managed by the Penang Harmony Corporation (HARMONICO), is a 49,000-square-foot facility dedicated to promoting inclusivity and interfaith harmony.

Originally a colonial-era bungalow, the centre has been transformed. The restored main building now serves as HARMONICO's office space. A newly-built community hall complements the complex, surrounded by lush greenery that creates a peaceful atmosphere for gatherings.

The community hall and garden can be rented by the public for a variety of purposes like educational programs, celebrations, meetings, recitals and more.
