๐๐ค๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฃ, born in 1974 in Penang, Malaysia, is a self-taught photographer and collage artist whose journey into the arts has been informed by both personal passion and the rich environment of his hometown. Although his early aspirations were rooted in becoming an artist, Tan initially pursued a degree in computer science, seeking a conventional career. However, after a few unfulfilling years in the tech industry, he rediscovered his love for photographyโa passion that had been quietly nurtured through the thousands of films he had watched over the years. This cinematic influence became a foundation for his creative vision, driving him to explore photography as a means of self-expression and storytelling.
Howardโs work primarily captures the essence of Malaysian life, with a particular focus on Penang, the place he calls home. He draws inspiration from the cityโs architectural heritage, colourful street life, and the often-overlooked beauty of everyday moments. His photography oscillates from documentary-style images that tell stories of the people and places around him to abstract compositions that challenge conventional perceptions.
In addition to his photographic pursuits, Howard has developed a fascination with collecting vintage Malaysian black-and-white photographs and books from local flea markets. This collection ignited a desire to create something new and meaningful from these historical materials. As a result, he began to produce a series of photo collages that integrate his own imagery with these found objects, incorporating elements like vintage book covers, stained pages, atlases, and measuring tapes. This approach enables Howard Tan to connect with the past while breathing new life into forgotten stories, providing an intriguing perspective that explores the intersection of memory and identity in his artistic practice.
