Langsat – abundant in 2024

There is always a “balancing” act in play with nature. This season we had our share of durians . . . good enough for us (not as abundant as prior years). The low yield of the durians was balanced, alhamdullilah by an abundance of langsat. Interestingly, it was just from just two of the 4 langsat trees.

Langsat is best plucked manually. As much as I wanted to, some of the langsat could not be plucked as they were not only too high, but also on small branches. I have grown fond of climbing the langsat tree (with caution) to pluck some of the ripe fruits (as a way of remembering my days as a young boy climbing jambu trees after primary school class). That said, I dare not risked the higher and smaller branches. The serious climbing and plucking was thus done by some of the Orang Asli boys in the neighbourhood.

What about next year? Hope I am still around and still be able to climb trees to enjoy the harvest of D’Bayou insyaAllah.

Fruit Season Still On – Other Than Durians

2024 durian season for us is over (ate our last durian about a week ago). But durians are not the only ones for us to enjoy . . . we have an abundant of cempedak (“Artocarpus integer”). Not sure if there is an English name as it is not jackfruit (nangka). When ripe, it gives a very strong aroma (not as “stinky” as durians). Eaten raw or fried in batter, they are delicious. Ours however tend to be consumed by the squirrels and insects. The two pythons and the five monitor lizards at our kebun are not enough to keep them at bay.

We had our fried cempedak shared with friends and families, apart from selling some fresh cempedaks. We have more cempedaks than durians this year and with it . . . more fun as well.

May the harvest be just as good for years to come.

Fruit Season – Durians?

With every fruit season, durians come to mind. There’s nothing wrong with that. For us this year, alhamdulillah 3 of our old trees bore fruits. Each presents its own type of durians . . . sweet creamy to sweet bitter, from small to large.

Given that we are not at D’Bayou, getting the durians is always a test. Primarily, that of letting go to either the squirrels or humans illegally entering our land in pursuit of the durians. Be that as it may, we still do get our share. Enough for us, nonetheless and to be given away to families and friends.

May all our matured trees, on both banks of the river bear fruits next year insyaAllah.

Raya Haji @ Kebun
It's always great to spend the night at D'Bayou. More so when it's over the Raya Haji break.

Getting the place ready though was quite a chore . . . mowing the grass, clearing some overgrowth, fixing the water supply, relocating gardening equipment to make space et cetera, et cetera.

All worth it, as we also managed to get 8 durians and 10 cempedaks . . . and of course, the Cucus joining us.

Repeat again next year, insyaAllah, if we can.

Jering . . . jengkol

We have two pokok jering at D’Bayou. The scientific name is “Archidendron pauciflorum” or in English, dogfruit. As a kampong boy, I grew up eating the likes of jering, rebung, daun ubi, pucuk paku, petai etc.

Thus it’s no surprise that when our pokok jering bore fruits, I was keen to have it harvested and cooked. Jering needs to be eaten in moderation . . . I remember being told when I was young that jering while being medicinal, can also cause issues to kidney and urination (if taken in abundance). I thus consume it sparingly (pre boiled to remove some of the jengkolic acid present in the seeds) and cooked, not raw.

Musim Buah 2024

Alhamdullilah, the annual fruit season is back.

What will we get this year? We don't know as it will always be dependent on the weather and how we care for the trees. Some flowers and buds will drop off by natural attrition. Only the strong ones will remain on the trees to eventually mature into fruits to be enjoyed.

Then there is the other factor . . . who will get to enjoy the fruits? The owner, the monkeys & squirrels or the thieving humans? So far, alhamdulillah, we do get our share. Our fruits are to be enjoyed by all.

What looks promising thus far . . . durian, manggis, bachang, rambai, rambutan, langsat and cempedak.

Cucu & Chariot
One of our Cucu joined us in our weekend kebun visit. Her condition for tagging along was simple . . . being the princess that she is, the chariot must be brought along. The two grandma, grandpa willingly become the "horsepower" for such chariot . . . whatever it takes to make the Cucu fond of our kebun.

It was however, a dry, hot, scorching day . . . we sadly could not stay long (plus it's Ramadhan, thus need to be back in USJ)

Feb 11, 2024
It's February and I didn't realise I have not posted anything on D'Bayou this year. It's not that there's nothing going, just that we have not taken much photos of late.

Anyways, here's one from our overnight stay during the Chinese New Year weekend. Enjoying breakfast by our Pondok . . . out in the open air. The cool morning air and slight breeze made it breakfast to enjoy.

Having 3 of the cucus around made it more fun.

Hope to share more pics of D'Bayou

Ending 2023
A good way to end the year is by enjoying the fruits of our labour.

We have had some good results from our pineapple. We also managed to continue growing them once the fruit is eaten (through the crowns or suckers). Recently, we managed to pluck a plant ripened MD2. This is 3rd generation fruit from the sucker of the 2nd generation. Good size, great taste . . . looking forward to growing the fourth generation.

Our eldest Cucu was on hand to pluck the nenas.

Happy 2024 to all. May it be great and peaceful.

Chalcorana Labialis (Katak Bibir Putih)

Of late we noticed this particular frog basking in the morning sun. It's always at our rumbun lengkuas, just off the bridge to D'Pondok. Now that we know its daily habits, planning to capture it on camera becomes a tad easier.

It's the "White Lipped Frog" ("Chalcorana Labialis") which is endemic to Semenanjung Malaysia. It's not that large, about 1.9 inches for males, with females being larger at 2.8 inches.

It's good to see more of these frogs as it is part of ensuring a healthy ecosystem. I for one was keen to see the frogs population thriving for a different reason . . . we now have some pythons claiming D'Bayou as part of their home. Seeing the frog's population grow means the pythons are not devouring them to extinction. How to handle the pythons is a separate story.

Been A While . . .

We have been rather busy with multiple activities such that our visits to D'Bayou have been hampered significantly.

That said, we did manage a few fruitful trips . . . literally fruitful! Our rambutan gading, rambai, manggis, cempedak, bachang, langsat, pulasan and durian all gave us something to smile about. We hardly returned empty handed.

Some are low hanging enabling us to pluck at ease, while others needed a bit of extra help such as the roof of our pick up truck combined with a harvesting pole.

All these sadly will end in Sept . . . Oct will be post harvest soil remediation.

Weekend With Cucus

We are spending more weekends at D'Bayou. It's particularly great when our "cucus" tag along to spend time there as well.

Last weekend was great as we managed to harvest some sweet corn. Not a lot but enough to keep the "cucus" happy and enjoy their harvest. Real life experience of "farm to table", cooked within mere hours of being plucked. May they grow up to be appreciative of "kampong" simplicity.

We look forward to our weekend sojourns.

Pineapple (Ananas Comosus)

Today we plucked another pineapple. It may be just one but we are grateful alhamdulillah, to be rewarded the labour of our efforts.

The plant originated from a fellow farmer, Pahmi Mokhtar. He gave us some slips which we planted. Pineapples are generally hardy plants. They can thrive in extreme conditions. This particular plant survived the floods of late 2021. It took just over 2.5 years to bear fruits even though we left the plant unattended.

This specie (MD2 variant, Yankee, Sweet Selangor) is quite unique as it produces a number of slips (babies). Other types have the tendency to produce suckers for propagation. Today's plant offered 8 slips plus 1 crown. That's potentially 9 new pineapple plants (if I can get all to grow). We will definitely plant them and hopefully get to harvest their produce.

What's the flesh like? How is the taste? . . . that will be the subject of another posting. Meanwhile, we have a few more pineapples to harvest shortly.

Reap what you sow
We have been rather busy and thus didn't realise we have not posted much on D'Bayou.

One thing we can say is that it has been hot . . . very, very hot even at D'Bayou. The seasonal fruits are making a showing . . . will post about that later when the fruits are a tad bigger.

Meanwhile, we have been working on our vegetable patch. Nothing fancy . . . just started with bendi (okra - abelmoschus esculentus) and petola (luffa - cucurbitaceae). Being rather hardy plants, they grew well and yield produce within two months.

Time to reap what we sow. Petola goreng and bendi rebus make great simple serving at the dining table.

Selamat Hari Raya

May all who celebrate Eid Fitri have a good festive time celebrating with family and friends.

It has been 2 years since we had an opportunity to celebrate Raya at D'Bayou (due to pandemic restrictions). It is thus great to be back at D'Bayou for the last night of Ramadhan, berbuka puasa and enjoying the kampong atmosphere. We were treated to an array of fireworks from the neighbours. Whatever that we had pales by comparison in terms of sound and light effects. But . . . it was a night of excitement for the cucu.

For us adults, great to spend time berbuka puasa at our Pondok and start takbir Raya after that.

Selamat Hari Raya; Maaf Zahir Batin.

Sneak Into D'Bayou

Managed a quick trip to D'Bayou this morning. A sight which greeted us as we turned in from Jalan Sg Lui was the "Bachang" tree flowering. It is such a magnificent sight . . . a loner tree, tall and majestic above D'Balai with red, crimson flowers .

A walk around also revealed a few other trees are flowering or fruiting. The quantity does not look like much but with each producing a bit . . . that is all we need. Cempedak, Pulasan, Durian, Manggis are all giving us some hope.

May they grow well. July looks like a fun month ahead insyaAllah.

Ramadhan's Eve
Based on calculations, it should be Ramadhan tomorrow (March 23).

We took the opportunity of the last few days before Ramadhan to transplant some pineapples from USJ to D'Bayou. They join a group of pineapples which are bearing fruits.

3 of our cucus joined us (enthusiastic being there but not necessarily the case when coerced to help transplant the pineapples). They did have fun anyways (as always). That is what we try to do . . . encouraging them to enjoy being at D'Bayou apart from planting, harvesting and eating.

May the pineapples grow into succulent fruits . . .

Meanwhile, Selamat Menyambut Ramadhan

Menjengok diJendela

One of the enjoyment of being inside D'Pondok is looking out. D'Pondok is built on an island. You will thus see water all around it.

Sometime though it's good to look at the window itself . . . to see what it is , instead of seeing through it.
Jendela . . . the conduit to see near and far.
Jendela . . . pathway for light and breeze.
Jendela . . . to see and be seen.
