We are a non-traditional photographers who is fascinated with people. We chase light, gets lost and finds joy wherever we are. Our style is documentary, romantic, raw, intimate and evokes a bit of whimsy. But this hasn’t always been the case.
We started our little Wedding photography business in 2008 by shooting super traditional weddings, making friends pose awkwardly in front of the camera ; all in the hopes of creating something magical. It took Us awhile, but We realized that We aren’t really connecting with our subject. We weren’t telling a story, We were just shooting what was in front of Us - shooting pretty things and not making the most out of our environment. In September of 2009, just after a year in the industry We got a shocker when an email came to us from a Dutch Couple. Photographing their Wedding in the Hague, Netherlands was so surreal. People there are warm, the environment are just majestic and that’s when I realize my eager and passion to learn about Wedding Cultures all over the globe. And that’s how our little humble Jofanna Bridal went International.
Ever since our first International assignment, our style has grown exponentially. I’ll be honest, I feel as though I’ve had to work harder living in Sabah- work harder to make up for the fact that I don’t see beautiful setup every day. I don’t drive on foggy tree-lined roads, stumbleupon snow-covered cabins or have colonial buildings on sight. Kota Kinabalu is my home and it is beautiful in it’s own ways. I have made some magic in the flint hills, over the ocean, on family yards, in abandoned airstreams and at local sundry shops. It’s all in how you see the world. I wouldn’t trade my Kinabalu roots for anything.
The past few years traveling out of the country, We can say that We have created our best work. Traveling brings out the spontaneity and excitement and I find ourself looking at the world more romantically - with a sense of wonder. We enjoy gaining a fresh perspective and oftentimes, We surprise ourself. We explore what it is to be human, to adventure, to take in the beauty that surround us and document it. People want to be moved. They want to experience themselves. I feel as though we can make this happen through our stories.
