A Nostalgic Farewell to Gaya Street’s Iconic Barber Shop
Time has a way of transforming everything around us, and yet, some places leave an indelible mark on our memories. Back in 2011, I had the opportunity to photograph a Pre-wedding Portraits in a unique and unconventional setting—an old-school barber shop located in the heart of Gaya Street. This wasn’t just any barber shop; it was a place where life seemed to pause, and the charm of a bygone era filled the air.
The bride and groom wanted something out of the ordinary, and the barber shop provided just that. The first photo captures them standing in front of the shop, the industrial backdrop contrasting beautifully with the elegance of their wedding attire. The second photo shows a candid, playful moment where the bride humorously “shaves” the groom, surrounded by curious onlookers. These images became some of my most memorable works, not just because of their visual appeal but because they reflected the raw, vibrant spirit of Gaya Street.
Now, hearing that this beloved barber shop is closing due to soaring rental costs, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness. It’s not just a business that’s shutting down; it’s a piece of Gaya Street’s history, a fragment of its identity.
As a wedding photographer, I’ve always believed in the power of preserving moments—not just of people but of places that shape those moments. To the barber shop on Gaya Street, thank you for being part of a story that will forever be cherished.
If you have memories of this shop or Gaya Street, I’d love to hear them in the comments below. Let’s keep the spirit of this place alive through our shared stories.
