Pioneer theatre company in Malaysia founded by Dato' Dr. Faridah Merican & Joe Hasham OAM. In 1989, two people joined hands to pursue a dream.

Unbeknownst to them, this dream of theirs became a phenomenal driving force that has and continues to redefine the arts in Malaysia. The duo is none other than husband-and-wife team Dato’ Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham OAM, Founders of The Actors Studio (Malaysia). Armed with a mission to nurture the arts in Malaysia, they have groomed countless of artistes, created a string of theatre spaces and

enriched lives by improving access to the arts. Seven venues on, hundreds of award-winning productions later, The Actors Studio’s expertise remains unrivaled. It has presented almost 600 productions and over a million people have passed through the doors of its theatres. Following the sold-out Saccharine, director Christopher Ling brings us Perhiasan Kaca, a Bahasa Malaysia translation of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie by Marlenny Deenerwan.

This classic, which won Best American Play, centres on a mother who lives in the past, a shy daughter fixated on her glass animals, and a son who dreams of becoming a poet.

Though desperate for a better future, each escapes into their own personal “glass menagerie” to elude their own pain. Will they be able to break free?

For one whole year, Orang Orang Drum Theatre spent three days a week in the heights of Shan-Ka-La: creating work, learning the basics of construction and farming, adapting to the unfamiliar rhythms of orchard life. They spent the other four days back in the familiar city, teaching and performing as usual.

By shuttling between these lifestyles, these places, they began to compare and reflect on the relationship between people and the environments they inhabit.

Listen: the drum echoes in Shan-Ka-La.�Look: a snapshot of the city on stage.�Between these, we untangle the modern riddle: What does it mean to belong?

Kaka-Lala [Cantonese] ~ceruk-meruk; every little corner of the world�Place a “mountain” before it and it becomes Shan-Ka-La: somewhere that’s in the middle of nowhere.

TUTAS - BPA Music & Dance Launch 2024

Taylor’s University and The Actors Studio (TUTAS) have entered into a collaboration with the Young Choral Academy (YCA) and the ASK Dance Company (ADC) to introduce the new Music and Dance Specialisations as part of its efforts to further elevate the Bachelor of Performing Arts (Honours) programme. This is a dream come true for The Actors Studio to welcome long-time friends and collaborators, ADC and YCA, to the TUTAS family. It is exciting news for young people who are looking at pursuing the performing arts because not only do they get to learn from the best of the best, but they are now able to explore the different genres of performing arts here at TUTAS. As Malaysia’s only conservatory-style performing arts programme, the introduction of Dance and Music specialisations makes #TUTAS even more attractive as these students can access not only a full-fledged performing arts centre that acts as their campus but each partner’s wealth of expertise, know-how and industry connections. Our Story

In 1989, two people joined hands to pursue a dream. Unbeknownst to them, this dream of theirs became a phenomenal driving force that has and continues to redefine the arts in Malaysia.

The duo is none other than husband-and-wife team Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham OAM, Founders of The Actors Studio (Malaysia).

Armed with a mission to nurture the arts in Malaysia, they have groomed countless of artistes, created a string of theatre spaces and enriched lives by improving access to the arts.

Seven venues on, hundreds of award-winning productions later, The Actors Studio’s expertise remains unrivaled. It has presented almost 600 productions and over a million people have passed through the doors of its theatres.
