These men protects and preserves our forests and other protected areas. The forest rangers from Jabatan Perhutanan Semenanjung Malaysia carry with them huge responsibilities and face risks in their line of work everyday.

ETC, ESC, TCS, HDC, HSA, Rear Diff Lock, Mud, Snow, Sand and Rock terrain modes, TRAIL/CRAWL Control, TRAIL/TANK turn, sway bar disconnects. There's a button or k**b for everything in the modern 4WD today. HOW do we make sense of these and WHO is really making the decisions?

We cannot take a modern 4WD off-road and expect it to perform without a basic level understanding of the driver aids/technologies behind them. Some of these technologies may cause hindrance if not used correctly or as intended, and in some cases may even perform better when disabled.

While we do address to these driver aids/technologies and how/when they can be useful, we will always emphasize on teaching essential skills like ground reading, risk assessment and safe driving techniques, as these skills would enable each driver to make the decisions first over any button or k**b.

Well the weather held and made for a great day during our RoSPA-assured off-road driving course. Every trainee went home with a thorough understanding of drivetrain, suspension, torque management, momentum, traction and the advanced driver aids their vehicle may possess. More importantly, they left with the knowledge and skills to operate a vehicle off-road safely and effectively.

Private training for our special guest from Bishkek. A couple of years back, we took a nomadic escape into the scenic wild nature of Kyrgyzstan on horseback. From rugged canyons to stunning alpine lakes nestled in the mountains, it was an unforgettable experience. Riding was new to us but we quickly got a hang of it under the expert guidance of Iliiaz Imanaliev . So, during his recent trip to Malaysia, we saw the perfect opportunity to return the favor.

After training, many stories were shared and ideas exchanged. Who knows, we may see ourselves co-organizing 4x4 tours in Kyrgyzstan for Malaysians soon. 😉

Owning a brand new 4WD is exciting. More so when we think of the places and adventures it can take us. For this same reason, many would eagerly upgrade their new 4WD with bigger tyres, suspension lift and all sorts of aftermarket parts to improve its off-road performance.

This isn't the case for Lee. He believes the first "upgrade" should be driver's skill and knowledge of his 4WD's capabilities and limitations. With these, he can then make informed decisions on improving his 4WD to suit the kind of off-road driving he will be doing.

Depending on the skill level of the trainee, we start with Guided level of instructions: full briefing is given before and during each hazard/obstacle and a demonstration drive is always carried out.

Then, when the trainee is ready for it, we move to Independent: allowing the trainee to negotiate the obstacles without direct instructions but be ready to identify, analyze and correct any faults.

The objective is for the trainee to be able to operate the vehicle with the minimum safe level of assistance and advice from the Instructor by the end of the course.
